| Report on flashing OEM DVR-127D (apple OEM drive) to DVR-109 |
| (from a reader mail this weekend)
"
The DVR-127D is marketed as a 8x superdrive that comes with late-
model eMacs. Taking it apart revealed an eerie similarity to the
DVR-109. (reminds me of the past notes on apple OEM "DVR-117" drives that some readers flashed to DVR-108's-Mike) Successfully flashed to a DVR-109 using DVRFlash 2.2. (available here-Mike). 16x
speeds and DL recording unlocked. Havent tested DL yet, however, 16x recording does work. Drive reports as a plain-jane DVR-109,
"supported/shipped" in tiger. (10.4.3-Mike)
Methodical
"
I added the 10.4.3 note since that update made the DVR-109 and DVR-K05's "Apple supported/shipped" with native iDVD 5.0.1 DL project support. (They were not in 10.4.2 and earlier.)

| Sonnet notes their eSATA PCI controllers compatible with SSC Enabled SATA Drives |
| Last week there were several posts on problems with SerialATA hard drives with SSC (Spread Spectrum Clocking) enabled when using the onboard G5 SATA and with some (not all) Mac PCI SATA cards. Sonnet sent a note that their eSATA cards do not have a problem with SSC enabled drives:
"
Mike,
I have seen the ongoing discussion about SSC and have now seen Sonnet products questioned, so I would like to clarify things.
All Sonnet Tempo-X SATA products have always been fully functional
with SSC as stated in Sonnet's (eSATA) FAQ.
Sonnet has had at least one customer with eight (8) new Seagate
7200.9 500 GB disk drives and he has done extensive benchmark testing
with these drives.
"
Since that FAQ item is for their "eSATA" cards, I asked if the same was true for their earlier Mac PCI SATA card, the Tempo SerialATA (2port) model which I think was based on the Firmtek Seritek 1S2 2-port card and he said yes, those cards also were SSC compatible.
As mentioned previously, Firmtek has notes at the bottom of some of their PCI SATA cards product pages (the 4 port card models for instance) about SSC drives not being compatible , although the 2-port card models -do not- have that note and should be SSC compatible.
(For recent posts on this issue see the previous week's news summary.)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
