| Zalman VF-900 Cooler on Mac 6800 Ultra |
"Having recently upgraded to an Nvida 6800 Ultra Mac Edition in my Powermac G5 and found it a bit noisy as well as heating up, I researched the matter and also found the Zalman a choice product well suited to the task. I was
out for the VF700 Cu but however ended up with the VF900 Cu Led as that was
all they had. The result installation was a sucess and the method is
identical to the VF700. I used as bottom bracket the small plastic
retainer of the original fan and it just snapped in securing the four small
screws.
Everything works including the Led on the fan which is rather neat
looking. The package comes with a fan adapter which I did not use and find
necessary. Overall I am very pleased with results having a drop of 10
degrees C from the previous as well as ultra quiet noise level. I would
highly recommend the VF900 Cu Led to anyone who wants a cooler and quieter
graphics card.
-Norm"
There's a previous page here with photos of the VF-900 on a Mac 7800 GT and an older page on Mac 6800's w/VF-700 - I added the above to that page as a FYI. (For other graphics card and coolers articles/guides, see the Video topics page.)

| MacBook Pro users on booting from SIIG FW800 and FW400 Express/34 cards |
| (Updated w/reader reply below - FW800 Expresscard is also bootable he said)
"I just received the SIIG Firewire 400 ExpressCard. The card works in
Mac OS X and it is actually bootable. The website lists Mac
compatibility, but not in the included documentation. Here's the link:
http://www.siig.com/product.asp?catid=128&pid=1038
Here is the link for the Firewire 800 Card:
http://www.siig.com/product.asp?catid=128&pid=1081
Later on I may try this one. If the FW400 card supports booting, It
would make sense the FW800 supports it as well. When I wrote to SIIG they told me they didn't test bootability on the FW800 card. I
didn't ask about the FW400 card.
(I asked why he bought a FW400 card since the MacBook Pro has a FW400 port. (I assume he had an earlier model w/o FW800 port))
I have the first version of the MacBook Pro. It only has one
Firewire 400 port and I wanted more. I have a lot of firewire
peripherals that I want plugged in at the same time. I was tired of
swapping cables every time I wanted to use a device. It does not
have a FW800 port built in.

A reader replied to this post saying he'd tested the FW800 card and it was bootable:
"
Hi Mike, I tested a SIIG FW800 ExpressCard on my MacBook Pro 1.83GHz (April
2006) and it does boot off an external enclosure. Tried using a FW800
9pin-9pin to an Oxford 924DSB enclosure and a 'bilingual' FW800
9pin-6pin cable to an older TI-based FW400 enclosure. Both works!
The drives were formatted using the "GUID Partition Table" scheme and
cloned from the internal drive using Carbon Copy Cloner 2.3.
Regards, Eric
