iPhoto '11 v9.1 Update
FYI for anyone with iLife 11

"iPhoto 9.1
This update adds several new print product options to iPhoto '11. It also improves overall stability and addresses a number of other minor issues.

  • Provides the ability to create and order calendars in iPhoto.
  • Additional letterpress holiday greeting card themes are now available.
  • Fixes an issue that prevented videos downloaded from MobileMe or Flickr from importing correctly into iPhoto events.

The update is recommended for all users of iPhoto '11"

Updated Silicon Image 3132 SATA card OS X Drivers
A reader that previously had problems installing the earlier drivers sent a FYI that he had no problems installing the latest updated OS X drivers on Silicon Image's SI3132 Drivers page - v1.2.5.0 (non-RAID) and v1.7.5 (RAID - users of the MiniPCIe SATA cards (i.e. imac, mini mods) used the raid drivers) downloads there. He said these installed fine. (I've used their previous 3 (non-RAID) versions with Snow Leopard w/o any problems (w/PCIe card and expresscard) but have not tried these yet. In the past though some had problems with the SI site ref drivers but not sonnet's installer (despite it often being the same version - perhaps something in their installer helped?)
Here's his mail:

"Some time ago I wrote you about my installation problems of Sli3132 expresscard drivers (in fact I was unable to install driver, becouse it fails to install at the end of installation process), and now I wanted to let you know that my problems are gone. I'm quite an experienced OS X user. I've tried everything I know, including repairing permissions in first place. Nothing solved my problem until now - I've noticed, that there's a new 1.2.5.0 driver for Sil3132 based expresscards:
www.siliconimage.com/support/searchresults.aspx?pid=32&cat=3&ctid=2&os=3&
It is dated 7/14/2010, but I am sure, that it appeared not log ago, becouse I follow this webpage frequently. (not the first time this has happened - actual post date being much later than driver date).
I've installed this new driver on my system without any problems. Until now I used Sonnettech driver, which worked fine, but from time to time caused my Airport card urresponsive - when I inserted Expresscard it was disabling AirPort, and I was forced to restart my MB Pro to make AirPort card work again ;). Now with newest SiliconImage driver installed it seems all is working fine.
Sincerely, Max"

Mac Pro owner report on 240GB OWC SSD
"Subject: SSD Other World Computing 240 GB
I bought an SSD of Other World Computing 240GB for in my MacPro Nehalem 2009 2.66Ghz (6 GB RAM).
Installation was easy with the Icy Dock. Some experiences here:

RAID0 2xBlue Caviar 640 GB   vs   OWC 240GB SSD
Xbench 1.3 (Disk related) Scores:
Disk Test: 135.20   vs   349.99
Sequential: 216.20   vs   216.59
Random: 98.36   vs   911.16
max read: & write speed approx 190 MB/sec

(And some real-world tests)
BootTime: 60sec   vs   37sec
Duplicate 780 MB Folder: 32sec   vs   16sec
Duplicate 3.64GB Disk Image: 37 sec   vs   41sec
Photoshop retouchartists.com Speed Test: 39sec   vs   36 sec
Launch Garageband: 14 sec   vs   5 sec
Launch Pages: 6sec   vs   3sec

Overall, some test results were below what I expected. I never get the 285MB/sec read and write speed mentioned at Barefeats. But the system responsiveness feels snappier. This was an expensive upgrade, hopefully the disk remains reliable and fast. (First test results were not so good, but I optimized my cloned drive with Techtool Pro and removed Virusbarrier.)
