Happy Thanksgiving!

News is going to be light today as I want to spend time with my family for Thanksgiving.

If you missed last night's 10PM update to yesterday's news, MacConnection has IXMicro Ultimate Rez for $69. One reader reported that he was told these were full retail versions (I had wondered due to the MFR being listed a 'Apple Computer' on the sale page). First $79, now $69, how low can they go? [Note - IXmicro later went out of business. the last source of their drivers is OWC's Tech Center page.]

Ult. Rez Deals - Shipping Restrictions?: According to these readers from Japan, and Canada, there seem to be restrictions on the Ultimate Rez offers (see yesterday's news).

" Hi Mike,
I thought I should tell you that Micro Warehouse's recent special on IXMicro cards with the RayDream bundle is being delivered to destinations only in the 50 US States. My buddy who lives in the same city as me (he's the president of our user group) here in Japan ordered one of the cards and bundles yesterday and this afternoon got an email from Micro Warehouse that said to the effect that they won't be sending it to him for the above reason. I ordered one too this morning, but have yet to receive the refusal message. But that's probably only because it takes a while before the order gets to the shipping department or wherever it is that they refuse to send it.

This reader from Canada reports that MacConnection refused to ship to Canada, but MacWarehouse did (note this contradicts the above policy)

"... I saw that they were going for US$69 at MacConnection and called them up to purchase one.
They informed me that it was a full retail card but when I said that I lived in Canada they said they could not send it to me because of their contract with Apple. Now, I don't know what sort of cards Apple was using in their Apple Store but I would think they'd be OEM models from IXMicro. And this contract stipulation would support that theory.
Instead, I called up MacWarehouse who said they would ship one to me in Canada. I paid US$10 more but I feel a bit more sure that it is a full retail version. They do have a lousy no-return policy though.
Regards,
Wai Sing Lee "

PC Matrox Millennium - Mac Bios flashing: Don Edwards reports he's flashed his Matrox Millennium from PC to Mac successfully.

" I have a Matrox Millennium 4meg video card for my PC. I went to the Matrox site and downloaded the utilities for the Mac version of the card and the Mac bios updater. I put the Matrox card in my Mac PPC 8500 and then started the system on the built in video card. I started the Matrox bios flash utility and proceeded to flash the card. When it was done I installed the video utilities for the card and then shut the system down. I the hooked my monitor to the card and started the system. It started just fine.
The card is much faster than the built in video chipset and saved me a few bucks until I can buy a real Mac video card upgrade. It even fixed a problem I had at start up with MacOS 8.5. My background image would only show on the screen for a few seconds and then it would go back to the gray screen while loading the OS. This trick took that problem away. Oh by the way, I tried flashing it back to work on my PC and worked fine. Of coarse I changed it back to the Mac. Just thought I would drop you the info that Matrox Millennium Cards for the PC can also be flashed to work on the Mac.
Don Edwards "

I suspect PC Millennium (and Millennium II, the faster successor to it) are getting hard to find now, as Matrox is selling the G200 card now as their PC version. If you've flashed a Millennium II card with the Mac bios, please contact me.

Make a Difference: Be the Difference
Randy Mita, Brad Lau and I came up with a new slogan and theme for Mac advocacy - "Make a Difference: Be the Difference". We're asking that all Mac owners take advantage of every opportunity to let others know the Mac advantage. It's a grass-roots approach that will surely help.
