| Voodoo5 Drivers v1.10 Available: |
| Use the Voodoo5 3dfx Control panel to get the 1.10 driver update. Remember to open the 3dfx control panel after rebooting with the new drivers to update the Voodoo5's ROM. (The Control Panel will not flash the Voodoo5 ROM file in a Voodoo3 card however - I only mention this since one reader expected otherwise.) I was told recently the 1.10 update is primarily a bug fix release, not a performance optimization. Lightwave 3D v6 and Cinema4D issues not fixed yet however. (3dfx later wrote:)
The 1.1.0 fixes include:
- Voodoo 3 2D fix
- Lock up issues in some games while playing videos
- 32bit Bugdom/RAVE fix
I welcome feedback on any changes you see. This update may also work better with Voodoo3 cards than the v1.08 drivers. (I don't think these drivers will be available at their web site; only using the control panel update feature.)

| More Quake3 Dual Processor Performance Results (and SMP switch info): |
| Another reader sent his results of Quake3 tests under OS X beta with a dual processor machine (see farther down for some past links and tips):
"
Hello, just wanted to pass along some tests I did of MacQuake 3 on a Dual
Processor G4-500. The system has 256 meg ram and a 40 gig disk, and an AGP
Rage Pro 128. I installed OS X Public Beta on the disk as well as 9.0.4.
Quake 3 Dual
640x480:
OS X - SMP on -- 70.3
OS X - SMP off -- 76.1
OS 9 - SMP on -- 60.2
OS 9 - SMP off -- 60.6
800x600:
OS X - SMP off -- 61.9
[no other 800x600 modes/scores sent-Mike]
Whats interesting to note is that I also have X on a G3-450 which clocks in
at 47 fps with the same config at 640x480. Clearly it looks like the OpenGL
is optimized on X at the OS level and moreso for Altivec. I understand full
SMP support isnt really in Q3 in the 1.17 build, but the switch was there,
so what the hell. I cant say I've seen any faster fps on any card. I will
mention that my config is about as lean as is possible. I didnt have time to
run more tests on Quake, sorry, I do have to work!
Cheers,
./q3ded"
The OmniGroup Quake3 demo and config file were mentioned in this post in Tuesday's news which also linked to one of our forum threads on OS X/Quake3 performance including dual processor info, how to toggle SMP on/off and info on where Quake3 config file is stored under OS X beta. Here's a sample of some comments there from 'oliver':
(Ashby wrote: "I think turning the SMP off forces the game to use the second CPU exclusively (lowering switching over head) and allowing the OS to run on your first CPU. So in a sense turning off SMP support actually makes you use both processors (at least this is how I understand it at the moment).
...when I type in the r_smp=0 it says command not recognized, am I doing something wrong, or do I just need to have their config file in before this will work?"
"
(oliver replied)
"easy: write "/r_smp 1" in the console (no quotes of course. it will then tell you to restart (the quake3 application) for changes to take effect.
your explanation does make sense, thanks! that explains why single cpu users are not seeing any benefit, and dual cpu users even when smp is off.
under os 9 you just throw omnigroup's "q3config.cfg" file in your "baseq3" folder - be sure to take out yours first, since that's where all your settings and single player scores reside.
as i read the os x port of q3 doesn't store its settings in the q3config, but somewhere else. to use the settings there, i just renamed omnigroup's config to "omni.cfg" and put it in the "baseq3" folder. then write "/exec omni". after that, i restarted quake and did the tests.
quake3 117 beta for mac os x stores it's own q3config.cfg file in a special place: <your mac os x partition>/Users/<your username>/.q3a/baseq3/q3config.cfg
note that the .q3a folder is "invisible". you have to use sherlock to actually see that folder (by searching for "baseq3" for example) or looking for it from within mac os 9 (i mean a "real" mac os 9, not the classic environment"
so you can either replace the q3config.cfg file at that special place with the omnigroup-config , or just throw the omnigroup-config in the "regular" baseq3 folder and execute it with "/exec <config name goes here>".
both methods had the same results on my machines, but replacing the q3config is the "cleaner" method, but its also a little bit more complicated... :p
you probably already know this, but the totoro1.dm3 file belongs into the "demos" folder inside the "baseq3" folder. if there is no "demos" folder yet, create one.
just as FYI: if you'd ever like to open the pak0.pk3 file (or any other *.pk3 file), use zipit, as *.pk3 files are actually *.zip files.
cheers, oliver"
I'm asking everyone that can to post their results in the Video card/game performance database. I've created options for OS X beta Quake 3 and even the OmniGroup demo.

| IBM 32GB 5411RPM Notebook Drives in Stock: |
Since last spring when it was first announced, the IBM TravelStar 32GH been my dream drive for a Powerbook. With a drive height of 12.5mm, it will fit in all Powerbook G3s including the Powerbook Firewire (I'm not sure what the max height specs on iBooks are, perhaps 9.5mm max). Although expensive ($525 currently, plus shipping), the IBM Travelstar 32GB, 5411 RPM, 2MB cache drive should be the fastest notebook drive ever, combining very high density, rotational speed (for a notebook drive) and 2MB cache. (173KB of the cache is used for drive firmware.) Transintl.com has these drives in stock now. See this page for more info.I'm very happy with the performance and value (at under $290 now) of my IBM 20GB model installed in my PB Wallstreet..

| PL BlueChip PB G3 Upgrades Status: |
| Powerlogix has posted the following status update on their BlueChip PB G3 CPU Upgrade product page:
"Note that BlueChip and iForce cards do not require the Cache Profiler software to enable the backside cache."
Earlier reports indicated the first shipments would be G3/466 models due to shortages of G3/500 CPU chips, but that was not mentioned on their product page. As noted here previously, Powerlogix has stated that both the BlueChip and iForce (iMac) Upgrades require no cache enabling software which is a plus for OS X beta users. They note they are working on OS X cache enablers for their pre-G3 mac upgrades according to their web site, but no release date is given other than to say it will be available by the time the final (non-Beta) release of OS X.

| DVD ROM/RAM Drive Region Info/Resource Page: |
| Daniel Bravo sent more info on his Creative Labs DVD ROM drive report added yesterday to the Mac Drive Compatibility Database. He includes a link to a page with a huge list of DVD drives and firmware/region info:
"
hi mike
i have more info about the unit creative 2240 (dvd-rom/ide/imac 2000).
this mecanism is a matsushita sr8582.
i connect the unit with a large ide cable, in a external case (in my opinion
the only choice for internal use is swapping internal cd for a dvd
matsushita destined a laptops, )
this page (will) probably help you
perso.club-internet.fr/farzeno/firmware/dvd/dvdfi.htm
have a lot of info about dvd-dvdram-dvd-r -dvd+cdrw (plus patches for region
free)
David"
From a quick scan of that page, most utils/flashers are PC versions from what I saw but the info on firmware revisions, etc. might be of use to all owners.

| OS X on Intel Petition: |
Although it's been noted in the Other Net News links here in the past, a reader asked that I post a reminder about http://www.osxonintel.com/. The page's intro comments are "They have it, we want it. Mac OS X on the Intel platform. It's a beautiful OS, with all the power of a BSD environment." This is probably a controversial issue for many - how would this affect Apple hardware sales vs the pros of having a 10x larger market for OS X and the benefits that would bring. To date, they have 15,144 signatures since 9/18/2000.
