| Radeon AGP Retail Card Arrives for Review! |
FedEx just delivered a retail boxed ATI Radeon AGP card for review. The retail card has a small fan, VGA, DVI and S-Video output ports. (The OEM Radeon card has ADC, not a DVI port and has no S-Video out. See my previous Radeon OEM AGP card performance page for more info.) Also included in the box were S-Video and composite video cables, an S-Video to Composite video adapter and Mac/VGA monitor port adapter. I'll be testing this card in my D4/500 Dual processor and single processor systems (Older Macs don't have an AGP slot, but a PCI Radeon is expected 4-6 weeks after the AGP version is released ).
[Update - I've posted a full 7 page Radeon Mac Edition review covering performance, features, software, specs and more.]

| Voodoo5 Drivers v1.10 Feedback: |
Several readers sent comments on the Voodoo5 1.10 driver update noted in Friday's news. The 1.10 update is primarily a bug fix release, not a performance optimization. 3dfx wrote that the 1.1.0 update fixes include:
- Voodoo3 2D fix
- Lock up issues in some games while playing videos
- 32bit Bugdom/RAVE fix
(Click Details link to see a long list of reader comments on the driver update with Voodoo5 and Voodoo3 cards.) |

Lightwave 6 with Voodoo 1.1.0 drivers on Voodoo 5
Previews rendered with openGL play back correctly, whereas before they
looked stretched out. (like the memory wasn't being read correctly?)
I still have the menus and buttons turn black at random. I just upgraded
from Lightwave 5.6 to 6 a couple of days ago... There are many cool
features that I am enjoying, but I feel like It's been given the same
treatment as Version 5 for the Mac (which I bought). I'm a very loyal
NewTek customer though, I've been using their stuff for over 12
years!!!!
LW5.6 had drawing problems with elements in the layout views. Lights and
cameras didn't always draw properly, but it was still useable.

My Voodoo5 review 3D apps page notes some issues reported by others in LW v6 with links to a forum on Mac LW 3D. I don't think these issues are fixed yet but they
are working on it and there's a v6.1 update to Lightwave 3D due soon I hear.

I tried all versions of Voodoo 5 drivers on my Voodoo 3 3000 PCI - including the latest 1.1.0 version. I measured 2D speed with Speedometer QuickDraw tests and Voodoo 3 b12 drivers are still the fastest. However, with b12 RAVE extension some applications crash (3D Gerbils) and with Voodoo 5 RAVE extension works fine - so I combined Voodoo 5 RAVE extension with Voodoo 3 b12 and everything seems fine. New 3Dfx Mac Tools control panel is cool - but of almost no use with Voodoo 3. Is there any benchmarks of various Voodoo drivers on Voodoo 3 and Voodoo 5?
Greetings from Croatia! :-)

There are
hundreds of FPS/Benchmark scores from Voodoo3 and Voodoo5 owners
in the Mac Game/Video card performance database here - many list the driver versions used in the comments. (The database is linked in the sidebar and video cards page here).

Descent 3 now works on my G3 w/ Voodoo 5., but only versions before

Dear Mike,
I had problems with the 1.08 drivers and so was looking forward to
the 1.1 updates. But these too are acting strangely with my Voodoo3
card. I am using system 9.0.4. I "geared" down to 256 colors and
could not recover. Everytime I tried thousands or millions all I got
was a grey screen. Several old games also would give me the "grey
screen of death (gsod)".
Once I reinstalled the beta 12 drivers
everything is fine. I didn't try and swap out any of the old drivers
with the new ones (like the 2d ones)
Regards,
Bill

With 1.10 the graphing calculator does not display the graphics right on
voodoo 3 now
1.01 works best for me. 1.08 had a terrible bug in 2D that was suppossed to
be fix in 1.10

I noticed some weird changes with the VOODOO 1.1.0 version.
I have a V3 2000 card installed in a 9600/G3carrier
I loaded the 1.0.1 version available from the 3dfx website. This worked
great although the windows opening and other operations seemed a little
slow. It allowed me to change several settings (quicktime acceleration
etc). I then used it to update to 1.1.0. This again worked fine.
Until I opened the control panel. Everything was turned off and
unavailable for me to turn on (quicktime acceleration, MPEG etc).
Although windows seemed to open faster I didnt like that the QT accel
was turned off etc. I then tried putting the 1.0.1 control panel in the
CP folder without changing the driver extensions. This allows me to
adjust the same features as it did before and turn QT accel back on.
I
dont know why they gray out several features in both versions ( 3D
features are unavailable in the 1.0.1 version). The only thing I can
think is they dont want people using these to "enhance" the old V3 cards
and force upgrades to V4/5. If so I dont think that is very cool. They
should leave all the features on and let us experiment.

Hi Mike,
So far everything in 1.1.0 working fine. 3dfx's unified driver works like a
charm with the my Voodoo3 2000... before (version 1.0.8) I would get strange
system freezes when dragging files from place to place.
Like version the 1.0.8 release, QuickTime acceleration still seems disabled.
As an aside, I vaguely remember it working in the 1.0.1 (unsupported with
Voodoo3) release... of course the 2D was really a lot more bug-ridden then.

Your page is the only one I noticed that mentioned the 3dfx 1.1 driver
update. Previously I found that beta 12 slowed down 2d, so I reverted to
b11. Version 1.01 slowed down 2d again and 1.08 didn't help. Then I found
out that the card needed b12 rom flash, then I found that using a combo of
1.01 with 1.08 2d was comparable to b11. However v1.1 seems a lot snappier
(ok, maybe not a whole lot) in 2d. That was supposed to be one of the fixes
and it seems to have worked. Q3 demo is working fine as is UT. Thanks for
the great site,

The drivers seem to work just fine on my Voodoo3, but still get a blank gray
screen
after switching color depth, specifically from millions down to thousands,
forcing
a restart (hitting the reset button on the front of my G4 MP) Never did get
prompted to
update the ROM for my Voodoo3 upon restart (assuming because its because
these drivers are for a Voodoo 5 card ) [The Voodoo3 can't use the Voodoo5 ROM-Mike]
I have had the color depth
problem ever since the first drivers for the Voodoo 5s were released and its
not specific to my machine because I had the same problem in a beige G3
300mhz. the b12 drivers for the Voodoo 3 do not show this behavior though
"
"
Works fine with my voodoo3 so far, although removes quicktime
acceleration again. No glitches so far, as where seen with 1.08

I welcome feedback on any changes you see. If you can, enter your results of performance tests in the Video Card Performance database. (See the entry page and/or the FAQ Game section for how to run tests or to download benchmarks)

| Formac Proformance 4 Due Soon, Review PDF File Posted: |
[Update - as of fall 2001, the Proformance4 has not been released.] A reader sent info on the dual-chip, dual output Formac Proformance 4 AGP card shown at Macworld NY:
"
I called up Formac to find out when their Proformance4 dual monitor AGP
video card would be available. I was told "end of this month..."
They have a pdf file of a review of the card up on their site:
www.formac.com/2k/products/pdf_sheets/peddy08.00_pf4.pdf (Preddy Report )
(Name withheld by request)"
See their Proformance 4 product page (http://www.formac.com/2k/products/pf4_products.html) for more info. This post made me wonder what ever happened to the Promax/Matrox G400 Max dual output card.
[Update - Promax did later release the G400 Max card - see the Video articles page for a review.]
