| $50 Rebate on Voodoo5 for Limited Time (North American Customers Only) |
Lucian Fong send word on a $50 rebate on the 3dfx Voodoo5 graphics card:
"
Hey again Mike!
I just found out that 3dfx is offering a $50 (yes, FIFTY) on the PC and
Mac versions of the Voodoo 5 (PCI and AGP). This is supposedly an
"exclusive" deal for subscribers to an online gaming magazine (Daily
Radar), but no where on the rebate PDF do you have to have proof of that.
I'm seriously thinking about buying one now since Onvia has them for
$300, which nets for $250 after the rebate. Here is the link to the PDF:
http://www.dailyradar.com/contests/voodoo5.pdf
Lucian"
The Rebate PDF file notes the offer is good only on purchases made between Oct 20th, 2000 and Oct. 31st, 2000 and is valid only in North America. (For a review of the Voodoo5 PCI for Macs, see the Video articles page, Graphics card section.) |

| Xtrem.com Shipping MacThrust tm Adjustable Jumper Block Overclocker for $59.95 |
Remember the promise of a 1.2GHz G4 mac from Xtrem.com?
The other product of theirs was to be an overclocking aid (called MacThrusttm) that they're finally shipping according to their product page today. It seems to be nothing more than an adjustable jumper block with selectable settings. I'm not sure how many will buy this device, as most overclockers have already done this themselves either with spare drive jumpers or by pulling out and rearranging the jumpers in the standard Beige or B&W/Yikes jumper blocks. (The Systems page has articles on these warranty voiding tricks to increase bus/cpu ratio settings which determine CPU speeds.) Granted the MacThrusttm makes changing settings easier, but is that worth $59.95 (plus shipping)?

| OT: For Fans of Toy Story/Computer Animation: |
| Not sure how many of you are fans of computer animation (like me) and the Toy Story movies, but I wanted to mention that Sam's Club here has the 2 DVD disc set of Toy Story 1 and 2 for under $24. I had not seen Toy Story 2 before and really enjoyed it. (Note: A reader sent a note about the "Ultimate Toy Box" collection version which Sam's also has for under $45 I think. I saw it there but can't remember the exact price.)
"
Just as an additional temptation, the "Ultimate Toy Box" is on sale
at Tower for $50, down from the list of $70. The two movie discs may
be the same (I'm not sure), but the extra third disc has over /five
hours/ of extra goodies, covering the gamut from early pitches of the
concept and some preliminary sketches (the star, at that point, was
Tinny, from Tin Toy. That later became Woody, who was a pretty
hard-edged character, and a ventriloquist's dummy), through rendering
bugs, music composition, and more, for both films. (If the two sets
do have the movie discs in common, try the 'Toy Story Goodies' - a
couple dozen scenes with the characters acting.. well, off-screen.
Hilarious!)
-- Porsupah"
The 2 disc set I bought also had a few "extras". ( I watched the Toystory 2 DVD's extras including Pixar's first animation, out-takes from the movie, etc.)

| Yahoo News Article Cites Need for Change in Apple Ads: |
John Devore sent a link to a Yahoo tech news article today that cites the need for Apple's ads to have more "teeth". The author has a good point; the ads should be showing more concrete examples of how the Mac really differs from a typical PC, what its advantages are, model specifics etc. rather than just showing the classy appearances. The design can be shown off as well, but there should be more details on the systems/features/benefits illustrated in these ads (TV and non-Mac media print ads), since they reach the most potential first-time Apple buyers. (To expand Apple's market share and assure future growth, it's critical to sell to customers that have never owned a Mac before.) A spinning iMac doesn't really convey any info to someone that doesn't already know about Macs why they would benefit or want to buy a Macintosh instead of a PC.

| Deus Ex Radeon Image Sparkles Fix? (INI file Mod) |
| I've not had time to test this personally yet but a thread in the gaming forums here from a reader (jmac) noted the following mods in his Deus Ex ini file mods solved the problem of white spots/lines in the game with his Radeon card. He also noted the same issue in Unreal Tournament (same mod applies). I didn't see the problem in UT during the Radeon retail card review, but did see it on my G4/500 DP w/Radeon running Deus Ex. He apparently included the entire Rave renderer section of the INI file in his post. (32bit textures are not normally enabled I don't think)

| Samsung's Low Cost 17 inch LCD Display w/TV Tuner: |
Low cost is a relative term, but compared to the prices of most 17 inch and up LCDs the SyncMaster 170MP seems like a real bargain compared to other 17" LCDs right now with a street price as low as $1499 (according to today's cnet page). The SyncMaster 170MP doesn't have digital inputs, but does have a Picture-in-Picture capability via separate video inputs and a TV Tuner. Cnet rated the display very highly and noted very good image quality.

| First Proformance 3 ROM v2.5.1 Feedback (not good...) |
| Friday's Software Updates listing included a link to a Proformance3 ROM (firmware) v2.5.1 update but the first reader feedback on it didn't sound good. (Update: several owners of the card with the LCD (SGI/Artica) module reported they too had problems after the flash update. Zapping the pram did not help them. Those with a 2nd monitor flashed the card back to the previous version. A new G4 owner reported the update worked fine and addressed the sleep issue he was having with the card previously.)
"
Hi Mike:
I have to report bad news about the latest Proformance III EPROM
(2.5.1) and Prographics Control Panel 5.9.3.
My system:
PTP 250 -- xlr8 G3 Carrier Zif 466
OS 8.6
Speed Doubler 8.1.2
Proformance 3 Card with 16M VRAM (original software GA 5.7.1 EPROM 2.2.6)
NEC P750 17" monitor
After installing the new software the monitor DDC wasn't recognized
and I had only the 640 x 480 resolution available.
It also disable my xlr8 backside cache software (MACh Speed Control 1.4.3)
I was able to backward flash the firmware and restore the original
configuration to make it work again.
Best Wishes,
Allan"
One reader noted Zapping the pram helped ( hold the command+option+P+R keys down until the mac chimes 3 times as noted in the FAQ). Other than fixing the G4 system sleep issue (previously reported here from G4 Gigabit ethernet system owners), it's unknown what other changes/fixes are in the new version. I welcome other comments from Proformance 3 owners using this update. (Not sure it matters, but note if your card is the original or Plus version and if it has the digital LCD addon module and please note your Mac model and monitor info.)

| Reminder on Airport Hack for OS X Beta: |
| [UPDATE - OS X retail shipped with airport support standard. For users of PCCard wavelan/wireless networking cards - see the OS X section of our FAQ.)
NOTE: Another reader wrote with a warning on the risks of using this hack based on comments from
Matt Watson at Apple who says that you may send or receive corrupt/incomplete data from FTP, HTTP, SMTP, POP or IMAP connections which may cause higher layer applications in the system to crash. He also noted a PowerBook's battery may drain at much faster rate and that your disk may become corrupted requiring a complete re-install your system software. This info is noted at this (non-Apple) OS X Faq page.
Although it was noted previously in the the other net news links, a reader that missed it wrote with a reminder:
"
Mike,
Could you somehow let your readers know that there has
been a hack made for the Airport under Mac OS X? Tell
them to follow this link:
http://loki.creol.ucf.edu/~jpb/publicbeta/packages/AirPortHack.html
and click on the download link at the bottom of the
page. Now, boot into OS X and double click on the
file named AirPortHack-0.1.pkg. A dialog will come up
and just follow the directions for installing the
airport hack. Use the same tcp/ip info you use in OS
9 and make sure the built-in ethernet port is disabled
while the Ethernet card 1(Airport) is enabled. And if
you follow this, you should be able to use your
Airport.
Best regards,
Patrick Gast" |
