Reader Reported Fix for Beige G3 w/DVD Lack of Audio in OS X Beta:
I can't verify this works (my Beige G3 didn't have the DVD option) but a reader sent a detailed note on why there's no audio with that system config, and explicit details on how to use the developer tools to fix it.
" There is no sound support for Beige G3s with the "Apple DVD-Video and Audio/Video Card" in the MacOS X Public Beta. This is due to an error in the AppleBurgundyAudio kernel extension.

Specifically, in the file AppleBurgundyAudio.cpp, in method "implementsBurgundy", line 840 reads
"else if(s->isEqualTo("DVD-Video and Audio/Video", sizeof("DVD-Video and Audio/Video")-1)) {"

It should read
"else if(s->isEqualTo("bordeaux", sizeof("bordeaux")-1)) {"

If this change is made, the driver correctly detects that the "Apple DVD-Video and Audio/Video Card" is present, the AppleBurgundyAudio kernel extension loads, and sound works. Without this change, the AppleScreamerAudio kernel extension is loaded instead, which works fine for all Beige G3s without the "Apple DVD-Video and Audio/Video Card", but doesn't enable sound if the card is present.

In order to use this fix, go the Developer section of Apple's website, become a free member of the ADC, download the free "Developer Tools for MacOS X Public Beta", then become a Darwin developer and checkout AppleBurgundyAudio using CVS. Import the checked-out code into Project Builder, make the change, recompile, and replace the file
/System/Library/Extensions/AppleBurgendyAudio.kext/AppleBurgundyAudio
with the new binary.

For those curious, here's some background (I'm not 100% sure of it all, but I think it's accurate). Most Beige G3s use the Screamer audio chip, which is the successor to the AWACS chip, and represents a superset of the instructions that the AWACS chip accepts. The Burgundy audio chip is used in all Macs newer than the Beige G3s (iMacs, PowerMac G3 B&Ws, etc.). The Burgundy chip is also used in the one configuration of Beige G3s described above. Unfortunately, that is the configuration I have. The Burgundy sound chip instruction set is not a superset of the Screamer instruction set, so loading the AppleScreamerAudio kernel extension won't make sound work on a Mac with a Burgundy sound chip. It took a fair amount of effort to track this down and fix it. Hopefully this will help others with the same problem.

I can't say how happy I am that so much of the new operating system is open source. If this were to happen after an old MacOS upgrade, I'd just be stuck until the next bug fix was released. As it is, I could fix it myself.
-James Chalfant"

Note the developer tools are over 60MB, so many with modems will not want to download them. I've asked if it's possible/allowable to post the modified binary for Beige G3/DVD option owners to try.

Reminder on DVD Popping Audio Fix:
A reader sent a note that the tip on disabling Appearance control panel sounds solved his DVD playback audio popping problems.

" Dear Mike,
Thank you for your tip on DVD playback. I disabled the platinum sounds and turned VM off and no more problem!
Sincerely,
Wolf"

This was originally noted last spring from a Pismo owner and is included in the FAQ's Audio and DVD topic areas. Virtual Memory can also affect audio, especially (in my experience) when importing movies from a DV movie camera in iMovie, the sound was horribly distorted with VM on, disabling it solved it. But note OS 9 uses more RAM with VM off (a lot more if you run many applications at once).

CDMaster Install Tip:
A reader replied to the earlier posts that he had no problems with the CDMaster 1.01 demo installer by selecting a custom install which didn't remove any extensions he said. (I'm wondering if the previous reports used v1.00 perhaps or was the default install mode the issue?).

" I downloaded and installed version 1.01 and found no problems. I ran the custom installer, selecting just the items for my SCSI based system and removed the extension that it put in the system folder, extensions folder called "CD Master ATA/SCSI Driver". The CD Toast Reader remains in my extension folder. I Burned 2 audio CD's without any problems and will test it further over the next week or so.

Power Center Pro
450 G3 (Formac)
OS 9.0.4
Yamaha 4416 external SCSI recorder

(he later wrote)

Just to follow up, I burned a full data CD while surfing the web, e-mail and writing checks on Quicken. The caches on CDmaster never dropped from 100% full. The machine was not sluggish in anyway while burning, but did get sluggish during verification.

The CD master extensions are not loaded, Toast extensions are loaded

More Radialogic CDMaster Feedback - Installer Problems Noted:
As noted in yesterday's news and the drive database here, a Que Firewire 12/10/32 drive owner noted CDMaster solved his DOA problems he saw with Toast, but other readers noted some problems. One SCSI Yamaha 400 CDRW owner noted he had problems with burns not seen in Toast with that drive. Two other readers noted an install issue. (See the later post above from a reader using the custom install option.)

" Hi Mike,
I downloaded the Radialogic CDMaster Demo and installed it on my PM7500/G3 450/2-18gb Quantum Atlas 10k. After installation 80% of my extensions and some other control panels had been removed and put in a non compatable drivers folder inside the CD Master folder so the Mac was all fouled up. Tried an uninstall which seemed to make things even worse as I couldn't boot from the main startup volume. I'm now in the process of formatting the 3 volumes on that drive and hoping the restore from Retrospect fixes whatever happened. Just thought you and your readers should know.

BTW. Before the install I started up with extensions disabled which is a practice I always follow with new installs.
Thanks,
Gary S."

Another reader reported a similar install problem:

" I just download and try to install the Radiologic's CD Master Preview. I found that the installer has serious fault that move ALL the extensions form the System Extension folder to "CD Master Folder" -> "Obsolete Drivers" -> "Extension" folder. I've had to move all extensions back to system folder in order to get my system boot up properly. The installer was created on Oct 30, 2000 11:50am
Daniel Kwong "

I've written to Prosoft about this issue. I'm not sure why the Que Firewire drive owner didn't note this issue but perhaps he used a different version (he was a beta tester). I welcome other CDMaster user comments.

Another CDMaster beta tester had more positive comments:

" Just wanted to forward some info about CDmaster 1.0.1 to you. I was chosen as a beta tester and tested 3 versions of CDMaster beta. Except for a few minor problems (which were each addressed and corrected along the way) CDMaster is by far the best CD burning software I have used.

First and foremost - FINALLY Mac users have an asynchronous burning program. No longer do you have to leave your Mac idle while burning CD's. This is fantastic!!! I torture tested it in many facets and it performed beautifully. Serious downloads while burning, etc. Never skipped a beat and always a good burn. [Note - Toast 4.1.1 can do this also by selecting the Preferences option "PowerKey/Rebound Compatible" readers say. *However* this feature only seems to work with Burn-Proof drives (like Plextor 12/10/32). Trying to burn a CD on my Sony firewire 10x/4x/32x failed quickly (sending an email for instance) during a background burn process in Toast 4.1.1. CDMaster seems to be written from the start for async. operation.-Mike]

Worked marvelously with bargain basement media, both CD-R and CD-RW.

The interface is clean and some may say a little sparse. Actually it contains all you possibly need to perform most CD burning duties. You only get a choice of data CD, volume copy, or audio CD. The manual makes mention of VCD format in the future. I tried several burns with each format and they all worked fantastic. I was amazed at the audio burn actually that converts MP3 on the fly into audio CD format. Very fast and efficient.

I can only speak for my own setup which is an APS CD burner (Yamaha 4416S) on a G4/400 (AGP) connected to an Adaptec 2906 SCSI card.

I wholeheartedly recommend CDMaster. I do not work for Radiologic, nor do I have any relation to Radiologic...other than being a satisfied beta tester.
Cleve Posey"

The CDMaster demo (limited to 5 burns) is available here.

CDMaster Tip for Unsupported CDRW Drives:
Mike Simmons of Prosoft wrote with a tip for CDMaster users whose CDRW drives are not supported:

" "If you get a message that your drive isn't supported, you can try a little "backdoor" we put in, that will force a burn! Hold down Shift *and* Control while clicking "Record" (you will need to do this for the Record Confirmation Dialog, as well) and the burn will start!

Be aware though - that if you use this method, we don't "guarantee" a successful burn! ;-)
Mike"

Another Pioneer DVD-R S201 (DVD Recorder) Owner Report:
One of today's Drive Compatibility Database updates included another report on the Pioneer DVD recorder.

Pioneer SCSI DVR-S201 (3.9/4.7GB)
Apple G4 AGP running OS 9
Comments:
" The DVD-R worked okay with Toast DVD. I can burn MacOS volumes and make scsi copies (which is kind of useless unless you have a DVD-SCSI drive, and even then what's the point?

Toast DVD can't do ISSO or anything other than "Mac Files and Folders" which is disappointing. I don't know of any DVD Mac software out there besides Astarte DVD software that can write video and even then they have been bought out by Apple. This all means that to make DVD Video we are using PCs.

It was nice to know, however, that the DVD writer did work on the mac and we were able to make a DVDR that could be read by any mac with DVDROM. Cost is high -- $4500
Charles Ruggiero "

As I noted yesterday, I'm looking forward to lower cost DVD recorders that are said to be available early next year at retail.
