| Toast 5.2 Updater Tip for those with Crashing/Startup Problems |
| I've had about 1/2 dozen emails on problems (crashing at startup, etc.) with the Toast 5.2 update since it was released yesterday. I don't have any problems with 5.2 here, nor does everyone, but more than a few have. I've gotten 3 or 4 emails so far with the same tip/solution suggestion for the problem. Here's a sample email on the tip for those that have seen Toast 5.2 startup problems:
"
A lot of people - including myself - are still having a problem with
Roxio Toast after updating with the final 5.2 Updater. The solution is
to view the package contents (right click {Control-Click-Mike} on the app and show pkg
contents) then delete the "roxio.dat" file. Upon relaunch you will be
prompted to enter your serial number and it works fine from then on.
C.P.
"
There were also several comments saying the problem may be related to S/Ns that were illegit or those posted on website S/N listings. I don't know if that is true or not, but just a FYI (so that I don't get any more mails with that comment.)

| Another PCI Card Issue with new G4 MDD/DDR Systems |
| (from a reader email)
"
Greetings...
There is now a known issue with the MDD Apple Powermac PC G4. Known meaning Apple is finally
recognizing it, and working towards a solution. Essentially, the logic board does not recognize
the Digidesign Pro Tools LE PCI card. Apple is now working on providing users suffering from
this a solution. After speaking to an Applecare specialist it seems they are now leaning
towards having the logic boards replaced, but no official decision has been made. I have seen
on your site and elsewhere tales of similar issues with other PCI cards (CineWave card overheating/failing and LynxTWO C audio card boot/powerup problems with new DDR G4s noted here previously.-Mike) and perhaps this is
also related to the logic board on these machines. When I have tried to boot up in OS 9.2.2 (Pro tools is currently OS 9 only) to launch Pro Tools, the system invariably hangs. Users
have been waiting about a month and a 1/2 for a fix. Still, we wait.
You can find an official communication regarding this issue from Digidesign (makes of Pro
Tools) here:
http://duc.digidesign.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=24;t=015229
Thanks for your time,
Antonio

| Outlook Express 5.06 (Security) Update |
| Microsoft yesterday released an Outlook Express 5.06 update to address the security issue noted in a bulletin last month. (They've updated Mac IE for OS X/OS 8-9 previously, but Office X/2001/98 updates have not been posted yet as of today.) The info on the OE 5.06 update contains similar verbage to previous updates, but it also notes/links to the security bulletins.
"
This latest version - version 5.0.6 - includes support for MSN Web mail accounts and resolves all security vulnerabilities in previous versions of Outlook Express5. This includes vulnerabilities that might have caused Outlook Express to stop responding or caused a memory problem that compromised the security of the computer as well as a security vulnerability that can enable an attacker who had a valid security certificate to issue an invalid subordinate certificate that would appear to be valid. For more
information, see Microsoft Security Bulletins MS02-050 and MS02-019."
The MS02-050 bulletin as of this morning doesn't have the Mac updates linked, although they are listed at www.microsoft.com/mac/. Hopefully the Office X/2001/98 updates will be released soon.

| Reader Comments/Tip on Sonnet G4/800 Card Fan Noise |
"Hello.
I am noticing that many people are noting the CPU upgrade fan noise. I too had that same problem. And the problem is not because the fan is loud but because the fan is placed TOO CLOSE to the heat sink and the fan blade will wobble a bit and hit the heat sink. This makes a VERY LOUD noise which doesn't crash the mac or anything--just loud.
Solution. I uncrewed the fan slightly, pulled the fan away from the heat sink about 1-2 mm, then screwed the fan back into the heat sink "tight". The noise went away and the CPU temperature dropped about 5C. So the fan is too close to the heat sink to clear the blades of the fan from the heat sink ribs and as a result cooling is less efficient.
The fan has 4 screws that screw down between the ribs of the heat sink, not machines holes. So the attachment of the fan to the heat sink is really poorly thought out--in fact it is just plain stupid. But if you screw the fan in once or twice without over doing it a bit, then the fan holds to the heat sink VERY tightly and so is probably effective enough.
Summarize and post this to your site and I bet many people will thank you for it. Ask the Sonnet people if they are getting cards back that work just fine but are returned because the fan is making unexpected noise.
My little tip!
Glenn D." |

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
(Entries today will be added the following newsday. Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
