OS X 10.2/10.2.1 Modem Update
Apple has a Kbase Doc on an OS X Modem Update for several Mac models that have experienced problems with modems after installing/updating to Jaguar (10.2/10.2.1). Here's the kbase doc info on the issue and a list of affected models:

" The Mac OS X Modem Update resolves a rare issue in which a built-in modem cannot dial up. You may see the message "Internet Connect could not open the communications device."

Symptom
After updating or installing Mac OS X 10.2, some Macintosh computers cannot dial out via their built-in modems. You may see these three symptoms:

1. Internet Connect gives this alert message when you attempt to dial up: "Internet Connect could not open the communications device."
2. The Internet Connection Log contains this entry:
"Failed to open /dev/cu.modem: Device busy."
3. The modem works normally if you start up the computer from Mac OS 9.

Products affected

  • Mac OS X 10.2 to 10.2.1
  • iBook (Late 2001)
  • iBook (14.1 LCD)
  • iBook (16 VRAM)
  • iBook (14.1 LCD 16 VRAM)
  • PowerBook G4 (Gigabit Ethernet)
  • PowerBook G4 (DVI)
  • iMac (Flat Panel/Flat Panel 17)
  • eMac
  • PowerMac G4's: Dual 1GHz, Dual 1.5 GHz (Mirrored Drive Doors)
  • PowerBook G3 Series: 233, 250, 292 MHz (Wallstreet)

Solution
If you have not experienced the symptoms, you do not need to download the Mac OS X Modem Update... "

See the Kbase doc for installation info (they recommend downloading the file in OS 9 and the restarting to OS X to install it).

Info on 167MHz Bus Speed Mods for Dual G4 867 (DDR) System
There's been a thread in the forums here on trying to change the bus speed on DDR G4 867 models from 133 to 166MHz (as the Dual 1GHz and Dual 1.25GHz models are - requires PC2700 memory of course, not the PC2100 ram that ships in the dual 867s). Lionel of Macbidouille (French site) sent a link to info and photos on the modification. (Here's a link to a google English translated page link. Altavista's babelfish also has language translators.)
Note boosting the bus speed overclocks the CPU beyond 1GHz, so you need to also modify the resistor settings to reduce the bus/cpu ratio (multiplier) - M.Isobe's previous article here on the DDR G4 CPU Module speed settings has this info as does the linked page.

Comments on Mac Quake3 v1.32 Beta Update Due Soon (Updated)
Update - a reader wrote just after midnight that there's a Mac 1.32 test version released:

" Mike,
Just wanted to let you know that Graeme put up the 1.32 Mac build on id's FTP server:
ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake3/mac/Quake3-1-32-test.dmg

Of course they're saturated right now. Hopefully some mirrors will be coming up tomorrow. Sounds like this one is his beta of the final release.

Graeme's .plan:
http://www.bluesnews.com/plans/279/
- KanxeR "

One reader wrote that he can't load mods with the 1.32 test version but not sure if that is typical. (Not downloaded it yet.)

(Prev. info from a reader at appx. noon today - 10/8/2002.)

" well, the whole problem arose and was solved in one night...
here are the two .plan updates from Graeme Devine that explain it:

Description: Programmer
Mac Point Release 1.32
I have been working hard on the Mac point release. I am currently experiencing extreme performance degradation of the application running under OS X 10.2, with that in mind, and the 7fps frame rate, the app is not worth releasing until the issue is fixed. I 100% believe this is our issue, not an issue with the OS, since previous Q3A builds are running just fine under 10.2. Due to an internal misunderstanding I did not have correct source until today.
I apologize, and am working diligently on the issue.
Graeme.

Mac Point Release 1.32
Worked through the night on the Mac build. All performance issues under 10.2 have been fixed. The final point release will be available today, but while PunkBuster support is final in this client, PunkBuster servers, which are run by Even Balance, need to be updated to allow play.
Graeme.

long story short, the PR is coming out for macs today. w00t!
Adam "

(I checked the current plan file from Graeme today and it matches the last post above.) I keep checking ftp://www.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake3/mac/ but it's often too busy (too many connected users).

Powerlogix Comments on Dual 1GHz G4 in Cube Report
I removed this posted report on a PL Dual 1GHz in a Cube after Powerlogix wrote me that they have not shipped any Dual 1GHz upgrades yet. They also cautioned against running any Dual 1GHz in a Cube. I wrote the reader that claimed to be running the PL Dual 1GHz to ask what the story was (beta tester? or just a hoax). The only other option was if he was a beta tester - which Powerlogix later wrote that he's not and mentioned other obstacles like the heatsink:

"We haven't shipped any dual 1gigs yet. They are about to go out, but none have shipped to customers.

He's not a beta tester.

He'd have to explain how he bought a Cube heatsink to make this whole thing work, too. He'd have to have purchased an AGP dual and a Cube single and swapped heat sinks. A very expensive proposition, since we don't sell the heat sinks separately.
Thanks,
Robert J.
Powerlogix"

The reader replied he was a beta tester (PL says not) and that he bought the upgrade from them after the beta test. Still unanswered is the heatsink issue PL noted above. (I asked for photos of the heatsink/cube, etc. after the reader replied he was using an aftermarket heatsink, fan, etc. - I can't spend any more time on this unless the reader that reported it sends proof of the install.)

OS X Quake II 1.08 Update
Macupdate lists the OS X Quake II 1.08 update noting the following changes. (Thanks to the author for his continuing efforts on OS X Quake and Quake2 versions.)

" Version 1.0.8 fixes the following:
  • Rewritten event handler. Solves performance problems that some users were experiencing.
  • Rewritten audio CD driver. Solves issue with interrupted audio CD playback that some users were experiencing.
  • Added support for MP3 and MP4 playback.
  • Added texture RAM check. Quake II will revert to the software renderer on failure.
  • Added option to switch between normal and overbright gamma (variable"gl_overbright_gamma").
  • Added again support for the multitexture extension (via variable "gl_arb_multitexture", the Classic MacOS version uses "gl_ext_multitexture". This way multitexturing can't be activated by default.).
  • Mission packs can now be dragged onto the application icon even if Quake II is already running.
  • Added startup dialog for command-line parameters.
  • Added support for AppleScript.
  • New help.
  • F12 key will no longer eject medias if you bind a command to it.
  • Many minor changes.
Requirements: Mac OS X 10.1 or later, Quake II (retail version). "

XPostFacto 2.2.3 Update (OS X on Legacy Macs Utility)
Ryan Rempel has again updated Xpostfacto. Version 2.2.3 [dated 10-7-2002] lists the following changes:

You can install Mac OS X from an unmodified Mac OS X CD, and it only requires three extra clicks! Works with Mac OS X (including 10.2), Darwin, and Mac OS X Server.

    Version 2.2.3 of XPostFacto
  • Fixes a couple of problems with Darwin 6. Will now recognize the Darwin 6 Install CD as an installer. Also, will automatically boot in verbose mode when booting Darwin.
  • Will now find the correct Open Firmware name for the Sonnet ATA/100 card with the 2.3.5 firmware applied. Users report that the boot process still fails, though, so further investigation is required.

Custom Cable for ATTO UL3D SCSI Card in G4 DDR System
Yesterday's news had more items related to PCI card fit or function issues in the new DDR G4s (Mirrored Drive Doors). An OEM ATTO UL3D SCSI card owner wrote regarding a special cable he ordered for the card in his Dual 867 (MDD) system. (This was in reply to the comments from an OEM Adaptec 3950 SCSI card owner on fit problems - couldn't close the case with cables connected due to the connectors being flush with the top card edge and close proximity of the power supply when the case was closed).

" Hi Mike,
Another issue that I recently dealt with regarding an Apple OEM ATTO UL3D SCSI card in a dual 867 MDD. The card fits and works great, however, I could not close the machine with the SCSI ribbon cable I pulled from a Dual G4/500. The reason is that the SCSI connectors along the ribbon cable interfered with the case closing and at best I could only get the ribbon cable in a position so that the case would close at the expense of getting the ribbon cable to a single drive in the "ATA/66" cage. The solution to this dilemma was to order from an Apple authorized repair shop the SCSI cable specifically designed for the MDD machine. A description of how to lay out the cable is downloadable here:
www.info.apple.com/support/cip/pdf/g4mirror-scsicbl-073-0724.pdf

It has connectors for 4 drives positioned in just the right places to reach each of the two drive cages. One thing to note is that the 4 connectors are in 2 pairs with individual connectors close together (and not the recommended 6 inches apart for SCSI-3 to prevent "reflection") to accommodate the drive cage positioning. I haven't noticed a problem though. You will not find any generic SCSI-3 ribbon cable that will reach the 2 drive cages and allow the MDD to close up. It's a real tight fit in there, and you want to make sure you are not blocking any air flow.

As a side note, it seemed that 10.2.1 actually sped up the SCSI performance in my machine.
Hope this helps,
Joe
(I asked Joe what the cable cost and he replied)

The SCSI cable cost me $42 which is cheap considering the cost of ordering a custom made cable. The Apple part number is: 922-530.

Sorry for the delayed reply, but I wanted to get the part number to you since I would imagine there are several folks out there who will want to order this cable. Unfortunately, you can't get it from the Apple store directly.
Joe"

I think the owner's manual also has notes on SCSI cable routing.
