| 2nd G4 Tower owner reports Wake from Sleep OK w/Sonnet 1GHz Upgrade |
| Friday's news had reports from a Cube owner w/1GHz Sonnet upgrade noting wake from sleep problems (as was common from PL upgrade owners) but a G4 Tower owner reported he was OK. Another Sonnet G4 1GHz owner with a G4 Tower replied to my email saying he's also seen no problems with wake from sleep:
"
Mike:
I'm sorry for the delay. I meant to get back to you but I've been backlogged
at work
I have had NO sleep problems in 10.2.1 or 9.2.2. I don't know why others are having them. I have 1.5 GB of RAM on my power Mac--I don't know if the amount of RAM is a factor or not. (I don't think that's an issue which has been commonly reported in the past by owners of PL upgrades in Cubes and AGP Towers (including my tests of the 1GHz early model in my Cube.)-Mike)
I do note that the fan is shooting out hotter air than before and the heat sink is a LOT hotter.
I crunched a Seti @ home block in 11 hours with the 1GHZ! before it was 30 hours!
I tried to run the norton Utilities Benchmark--but it went OFF THE SCALE in 9.2.2.
(I suggested running SpeedRun instead, both are just a benchmark but SpeedRun has more
recent comparisons. It was one of the benchmarks used in my 1GHz PL upgrade review in my Cube, but Apps tests also noted there, which are the most important performance tests.-Mike)
It is truly amazing to see how the 1GHZ moves this system. Thanks to Sonnett, I think I can keep this Power Mac for 2-3 more years!
Joe"
I've updated Joe's Sept. 27th report in the database to include the above comments.

| Reader Report on Firefly 5GB to 20GB Drive Swap |
| As an owner of the SmartDisk Firewire (bought when apple had them for $99 noted here earlier this year) I was also curious about the possibility of upgrading the hard drive from 5GB to 20GB. A reader wrote that they had only the 20GB model listed in USB 2.0 (not Firewire) and he bought one to try and swap the hard drive inside into the 5GB model case.
"Mike:
As I mentioned to you earlier I was going to attempt to take a 20 GB
Firefly USB and switch the harddrive with a 5 GB Firefly Firewire. It
took about 5 minutes to perform and works without a problem. The cases are different depths therefore it would not be possible to just replace the drive since the 20 GB has an increased depth compared to the 5 GB version.
Both seem to work fine on my mac after transfer. If there was
a way to obtain an outside case then one could just upgrade the drive I imagine. Mark F."
Update - a SmartDisk employee replied to this post with comments noted in the next day's news page. |

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
(Entries today will be added the following newsday. Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
