| Performance Tests of BTO 9800 Pro vs Retail 9800 Pro |
Thanks to a reader that replaced his BTO/OEM 9800 Pro card with a retail model (to be able to use the ATI display's 3D/GL overrides), I finally got my hands on a BTO/OEM 9800 pro for comparison tests to the retail 9800 Pro in my Dual G5 system.
One thing I've noticed right away - this BTO 9800's fan is loud. Opening the cover and tilting the plastic shield to be able to temporarily stop the card's fan shows it's the source of the noise. That fan has got to go - it's the loudest I have ever heard on a mac graphics card and probably will get worse over time. Since I'm not the original buyer there's zero chance Apple will replace it. I hope this sample is not typical of BTO 9800s (the retail card fan I have is not nearly as noisy).

| UT2004 MPEG4 Trailer |
| (from a reader post)
"UT2004 - more than i could hope for?
I just downloaded the UT2004 trailer. ... It looks to be everything I have ever wanted in a game.. well, it's looks like what Halo would have been like if it had actually evolved!
I've re-encoded it (the trailer) as a .mp4 and bunged it up on my site - so hit this link if you interested in seeing it.
I wasn't that excited about this release until I saw this - Now, I can't
wait to get into some of that car jacking, aerial combat, deep space dog fight action!

| Pismo Bluechip G3/900 owner comments on Firmware Update for correct CPU Speed Reporting (i.e. iChatAV working w/iSight) |
(Update: This firmware update was publicly posted the next day at this Powerlogix page)
Several months ago when Apple released iChatAV and iSight, there were discussions here about the fact that Bluechip G3/900 CPU upgraded PowerBook G3s couldn't use iChatAV with the iSight due to the fact the upgrade speed was not correctly reported (550MHz reported vs 900MHz). For G3 based (not G4) systems, iChatAV has a 600MHz or faster requirement for video conferencing. (For reports on using iChatUSBCam workarounds, see the previous iChatAV feedback page.)
Although I've not seen it at Powerlogix's website (news, support or downloads page) as of this morning, one of today's additions to the Rate Your CPU upgrade database from a Bluechip G3/900 (Pismo) owner said he received a firmware update from Powerlogix via email that solved the speed reporting problem (and therefore the iChatAV/iSight issue). Here's a clip from his report:
"
After acquiring a mint condition 500MHz G3 (Pismo) on eBay, I purchased PowerLogix's 900MHz upgrade....
The one and only problem I've encountered came to light several days thereafter when I discovered that Apple's iSight webcam would not function with PowerLogix's remarkably fast G3 upgrade. (due to the fact the CPU speed was reported as 550MHz, below the minimum requirements for a G3 CPU w/iChatAV video conferencing.-Mike) I immediately contacted PowerLogix about it. The very next day I received their Firmware update (PismoFirmwareUpdater1.0a2.sit) via e-mail. I was informed that their software engineer had only released it the day before, on the 16th of October.
The updater had to be installed via OS 9, (I'm running OS 10.2.8 on the Pismo but fortunately I had OS 9.2.1 on an external FireWire hard drive). Other than that bit of necessary inconvenience the Firmware update went smoothly. The end result was better than I expected. Not only did PowerLogix's Firmware immediately result in enabling iSight, but Apple's System Profiler now reports PowerLogix's actual upgrade speed of 900MHz....
Norman S.
"
I wrote the president of Powerlogix for more info on this but and they replied:
"
Mike, We haven't announced this yet, as it was just released for beta late
last week. Things are going very well, so far every user has reported
success. We now update the firmware prior to sending out the CPU
cards to the customer.
Customers that already have G3 900s can also update; we will probably
release the final version that works under Open Firmware so users
that don't have OS 9 on their Pismos will not have to install it.
Thanks,
Robert PowerLogix

| Anyone working on an RC5-72 Client for OS 9? |
"....there is a huge problem with the RC5 challenge this time around. Unfortunately, there are still many of us who cannot run OS X on our Macs. I have a Frankenstein 9600 that can only run 9.1. (FYI - I'm not trying to push OS X on anyone, as I know my legacy Macs wouldn't run it well, but remember XpostFacto (linked in the FAQ here) is a very popular utility for installing OS X on legacy "usupported" mac models.-Mike)
Well, lo and behold, there is NO RC5 client for the RC5-72 for OS 9 users!!! This has been the case for nearly a year now and no one can give me an answer as to why no one compiled an OS 9 compatible version of the program this time around. I've participated in all the previous challenges and would love to put my G4/700 to good use, but I can't this time. Can you post an appeal for SOMEONE to undertake the task of compiling the program for Os 9 users?? Heck, every other OS on the planet is represented in this challeneg, I don't understand why OS 9 is not.
Thanks.-Devin C"
A reader replied to this post:
"
Hi Mike
about : Anyone working on an RC5 Client for OS 9?
- There is a bug that is preventing the client to run on MacOS 9. everybody
tried to solve it, but it's quite complicated
the bug apears to be in memory management. the client just crashes after a
few hours (YMMV). that's why there is no rc5-72 client for MacOS 9.
here are 2 links to the bugzilla database : the first one is the request to
port to MacOS 9. the second is the show-stopper bug that freezes machines.

| Rogue Amoeba updates product line for 10.3 Compatibility |
| Rogue Amoeba sent a press release announcing Detour v1.2 and saying they've updated their entire line of software recently for 10.3 compatibility.
"
Rogue Amoeba has today released Detour 1.2, with support
for OS X 10.3 (Panther) and Unsanity's Xounds 2.1 (Coming Soon!). Now, users of Xounds can send their Xounds sounds out through one set of speakers and their music to another. This update to Detour also includes new French and Italian localizations.
In addition, all of Rogue Amoeba's products have been updated over the past week for 10.3 support. Both audio recording and enhancing
tools, the original Audio Hijack
and the enhanced Audio Hijack Pro received minor updates and are
now available for download and use by 10.3 users. As well, all Freebies are also new and improved: LineIn, the Audio Input software and SoundSource, our convenient menubar audio device selector.
"
I generally avoid using system modifiers/haxies as they can sometimes cause problems with OS updates and I prefer to run a lean system. But for those that do, remember to check the website of the software addons you're using before updating to 10.3. If in doubt, it may be best to remove the addons before updating to 10.3 unless you can confirm compatibility beforehand.

| Reader reports on CTO G5s Shipping Times |
"Mike, Interesting tidbit:
I ordered my CTO dual G5 on Aug 28th and I received it on Oct 16th (7
weeks). My next door neighbor ordered his CTO dual G5 on Oct 14th and Apple said it shipped on Oct 19th (4 business days!).
I guess the backlog on CTO dual G5 orders is no more.
Steve"
Of course I jinxed that by posting this - a reader replied later in the day:
"
I ordered a G5 Dual processor on 10/06 with bluetooth, Radeon 9800, and
airport extreme card as extras. Ship date was to be no later than today,
but just received email notifying me that ship date now is 10/31!

| Guide to Bluetooth connections with T-Mobile Sony Ericsson T610 phone |
"
Since I sent in the information concerning the Sprint PCS Wireless
Card, I thought it may be useful to pass on my information on my
T-Mobile Sony Ericsson T610 phone and how I managed to get it connected via Bluetooth to my PowerBook.
Granted, there are alot of great people who may already have figured
this out, but I have yet to see anything posted in an easy-to-find
manner, which is one of the many great things I like about XLR8YOURMAC. So on with the program!
1. So you have a Bluetooth-equipped Powerbook (mine is a Rev. A 17-inch model) and your Sony T610 from T-mobile. And I'm assuming you have a combination calling plan with minutes plus the $20 All-You-Can-Eat GPRS/Data Plan.
2. On your phone, you need to create a new Data Connection by going into to Connectivity menu-->Data Comm-->Data Accounts. Select New Account, then type the following for the ACN: internet2.voicestream.com No further information is necessary, but take note of the CID= number, in my case it was CID=2.
3. Exit back to the main screen. I hope you have already turned
Bluetooth on and that you've already paired your PowerBook and Phone. If not, do it!
4. Finally, on the Powerbook, go into the Network section of System
Preferences. Select the USB Bluetooth Adapter device.
5. Under the PPP tab, name the connection whatever. You DO NOT need an account name or password. Type this into the Telephone Number field: *99***2# Note that the number 2 corresponds with the CID number you noted from step 2.
6. Now, under the USB Bluetooth tab, change the modem script to
Ericsson Infrared V110. Trust me, I tried the other ones and couldn't
get any of them to work as well. This script seems to connect at 33
Kbps, if anyone can figure out how to get a faster connection, post it!
You may want to check the box to show the modem status in the menu bar.
7. Really, that is it. If everything is on, you can create a connection
now.
Disclaimer: As for any how-to guide, I probably missed some small
details here. All I know is it works great!
Best Regards,
Jason

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
