Apple releases iTunes 7.0.2 update
Matthew called with a heads-up on iTunes 7.0.2:

" What's New in this Version
iTunes 7.0.2 adds support for the Second Generation iPod shuffle and addresses a variety of stability and performance issues found in iTunes 7 and 7.0.1."

Matthew later said repair permissions showed a correction on the itunes frameworks/internet utilites bundle, although I didn't see that on my system.
(BTW - also check your iTunes store country setting, mine wasn't set to United States after the update and thefore the iTunes store no longer showed any Movies for instance. Country menu selection is at the bottom of the window/page when connected to the iTunes store.)

ATI posts info on X1900 G5 Edition (PCI Express)
I'd mentioned this card was coming back in the August 7th news page (equiv. to the PC X1900 GT card) but was still waiting for an official release. Kiven today wrote there's now an ATI product page on the Radeon X1900 G5 Mac Edition. The Specs page has hardware details. (256MB GDDR3 Vram, 2 dual-link DVI-I ports + 9-pin S-video and composite video output, 10.4.7 or later required.)
As of around noon eastern today the card wasn't yet listed at the ATI online store (the mac listing had 9800 pro, 9600 pro and X800 - all shown as not in stock) I've written an ATI contact to see if he can provide more info on availability/price.
(Update - OWC is listing the X1900 G5 edition for $348.95 with 5 day ship date as of Nov. 5th.)

The sidebar of that page also links to other docs/info/questions on the OS X beta release including a FAQ and notes on PAL support has not yet cleared their QA. Here's a clip from Sling Media's press release on the Beta OS X SlingPlayer:.

" Sling Media this evening announced the immediate availability of the SlingPlayer for Mac OS X, a software download for Slingbox customers who wish to view their home TV natively on an Apple Macintosh computer.
U.S. and Canadian customers who have either just purchased a Slingbox to use with their Macintosh computer or prospective customers who have been waiting for Macintosh compatibility before purchasing, can take full advantage of this public beta, now via download free of charge, from the following two URLs:
http://us.slingmedia.com/page/downloads.html
http://ca.slingmedia.com/page/downloads.html
With SlingPlayer for Mac OS X, customers now have the ability to watch and control their home TV from any Mac laptop or desktop located just about anywhere in the world. Reader Request: Help with 24in iMac Display Calibration
(updated with reader suggestion below on replacing display colorsync profile, feedback on SuperCal)

"This could be just a false alarm, but for the moment I am not certain.
I have a question regarding luminance values in the newer iMac. I have a small problem with the monitor being too bright, and I an not able to calibrate the monitor properly for a photographer. The photographer, as many will need this requirement, sets his image on the screen within Photoshop and when he is completed the task, submits his image for printing at the local print house. The images are too dark, compared to a calibrated monitor. This "darkness" issue contains many other possible sources, but for the moment, the monitor calibration issue, is the only issue.

That said, the newer iMac we tested, could not produce a luminance value required by the monitor calibration equipment, at the low end of the luminance scale. For example, the new Intel 24" iMac we sold to this photographer was set at the factory to 456cm2, and the lowest luminance value we could manually set on the iMac was 266cm2. We require the value to go as low as 120cm2 to 140cm2. The newer 24" iMac Intel can not do this.

The iMac had a NVIDIA GeForce 7300GT video card installed. (24in iMac has onboard 7300GT, not the ATI X1600)

So, I am curious to know if you have any incremental information as to what I could possibly do for this photographer, to lower the factory luminance value. I am afraid that all of the newer iMac Intel based computers might have this problem. I hope it is not a new card, nor do I wish to see a piece of software jammed between the monitor, and the calibration device to lower the luminance value.

I believe it is related to the gamma output, when one compares a gamma of 1.8 (old Macs) to 2.2 (standard issue on PC's).
Then again, I could be very wrong... (Changing gamma in a display profile didn't help?-Mike)

Please let me know if you have any information with respect to this issue. I have many possible clients, that require the lower luminance value, and if the monitor can not go that low, then the 24" iMac is not a saleable item to the home photographer, that calibrates their monitor to get a desired print from a calibrated printer.
Thank you in advance,
-Jim k."

Some readers have replied that the iMac display specs may be too bright for accurate color. I assumed a custom profile could correct this but maybe there's not enough range of adjustment. (And a common complaint has been hum at low brightness levels - display inverter I assume.) Jim later wrote about an alternative calibration tool "ColorEyes' and some other software mentioned in later replies in this apple thread on the subject of dimming iMac displays/color calibration. When I first used a Dell 24in LCD with my 2003 G5 (X800 card) the display was much too bright/washed out (monitor adjustments didn't help really) but creating a custom profile (using OS X's colorsync util) for the display including a gamma change (1.8 vs 2.2 IIRC) made a dramatic improvement. (But granted I'm not a graphics designer or in the color matching biz.)
I've not used it in years, but one of the best display calibration utilities I've seen was Supercal. (Still linked in the FAQ's Displays section from a few years ago - I don' t think it's univ. binary, apparently it works fine under Rosetta on Intel Macs per a reply today below from an iMac 24in owner.)
If any reader has another suggestion for Jim let me know.
Updates/Replies:

" I work for a Museum on the west coast, and support our photographer technologically. He has just gotten a 24 inch iMac for on-location shooting, and had some trouble (do not now exactly what it was) calibrating the display. So we ended up copying the color profile from our main capture station (G5 with a 30 inch cinema display) to the iMac. If anyone is interested, I'll gladly send out the profile for others to use. Let me know,
(Several readers asked for a copy of this profile so I asked Tom to send a copy to mirror here.-Mike)
Here you go Mike.
There are two profiles in the zip file. One is the originally calibrated profile from a cinema display. The second one is a "tweak" of the cinema profile done on the iMac 24 inch display.
Reproduction is superb, at least on our end.
-Tom "

Here's a 24in iMac owner's comments on Supercal:

"SuperCal works flawlessly on the new 24" iMacs.
I used it last night to tone down the excessively bright output from my new iMac. Prior to calibration, type looked washed out on the screen. While i'm not a graphic designer, I found the difference between the stock profile and my SuperCal generated profile to be astonishing. Why Apple doesn't ship properly calibrated profiles on AIO computers is beyond me.
-Darrin F.
IT Manager"

Again I'm not a graphics pro/designer but I was very impressed with the level of control in SuperCal after using it a few years ago to create a custom colorsync profile for a PB G4 display.
