iTunes 8.0.1 released (notes several fixes/improvements)
Matthew called with a heads-up it appears in software update. (It's now also available at http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.) Here's the info on changes from Software Update:
"iTunes 8.0.1 improves stability and performance and provides a number of important bug fixes, including:
  • Seamlessly plays the current song when creating a new Genius playlist.
  • Improves syncing spoken menus to iPod nano.
  • Addresses an issue of deleting HD TV episodes when downloading.
  • Improves checking for updates from the App Store
  • Improves accessibility with VoiceOver.
  • Addresses problems syncing Genius results to iPod."
  • I used the download updater. On first launch iTunes 8.0.1 reported "updating library" and although I had not added any new songs for some time (and had just done a sync before the update) - iTunes 8.0.1 synced 60 songs (of 600+ total) to my AppleTV (which has always been set to sync all songs/playlists). From the song titles it copied, all were ones I had ripped from my own CDs years ago. Not sure why they were resynced unless some sync bug previously had never copied them. (I can't swear they were there on the AppleTV but they should have been from the "sync all music/playlists" option being set in iTunes since I bought the AppleTV last year.)
BTW - as I mentioned here before, I have repeatedly (since v2.00 update) seen recopying of unchanged videos/podcasts. Playing podcasts for the first time on the AppleTV results in them being re-copied again to the AppleTV the next time I ran iTunes. This still happens here even with the new AppleTV 2.2 software and iTunes 8.0.1. (AppleTV 2.2 update available via its update check - see Friday's news for details.)

Looking for feedback from Mac Pro/8800GT owners running OS X 10.5.5
When OS X 10.5.5 was first released I had some 8800GT/Mac Pro owners report the 256-color mode game issue was fixed and OpenGL extensions viewer now showed the card was fully OpenGL 2.1 compliant (ref: posts in Sept. 16th news page). But since then I've had a 8800GT/10.5.5 user write several times about freezes/display corruption after the 10.5.5 update (w/Nvidia related log entries), typically while using Safari. (I asked and he said no 3rd party addons.) He wrote again today after it happened again and said "A quick search and this seems to be a rather frequent issue". (So far over a dozen 8800GT/10.5.5 owners have replied they've not seen this problem.)
If you're running an 8800GT with OS X 10.5.5, let me know if you've seen any problems (or not). Thanks. (Reports from ATI card owners w/10.5.5 are also welcome if you've seen any pros or cons after the update.)
(BTW - the reader with the freeze problem wrote tonight he's seen another freeze and mentioned before he updated to 10.5.5. (via software update) he'd used some earlier Nvidia drivers installed in 10.5.4, so I suggested he try reinstalling 10.5.5 using the "Combo" update download after a clean restart.) There's always the chance he has a suspect 8800GT card but hopefully a Combo reinstall will help.
