Quake3 Invasion 2.2b Mod Install Tips/Feedback (Updated):
Several readers replied to today's earlier problem report to say they're running the Invasion mod fine on the Mac. Some mails included tips that may help those with problems running the mod.

" Haven't tried the mod myself, but the reader didn't specify what version of Q3 he's using. That VM Compile error makes me wonder if he's using the 117 vm_fix update to the Quake app?
It's the same kind of error you get when running Q3F or the new Corkscrew mod if trying to run it with the basic 117 app (or earlier).
Both the 117 (which runs faster) and the 117 vm_fix are available from www.macgamefiles.com.
js "

I searched Macgamefiles.com for Quake 3 and found only one 117 update with no mention of the VM fix, but Fileplanet has the Mac v117 VM fix update available here.

" Mike...about the invasion mod.

I installed it as well. I used stuffit, but I had to change the creator and document type to null first.

I had no problems, and it works great.

Make sure you have the stuffit preferences ----> cross platform set to "never", and it should work fine.

This mod is really cool!
Charles Archer "

" Hi Mike
I got the Invasion 2.2 mod to work perfectly on the Mac. I don't know what the reader who reported problems with this mod but on my copy of Quake 3 it works. I think that you have to set the VM parameters to 1 in the q3config.cfg file.

seta vm_ui "1"
seta vm_game "1"
seta vm_cgame "1"

And have the latest 1.17 version of Quake 3 installed.
Cheers,
Rob "

" Mike,
I've found other mods giving similar error messages and the solution that worked for me is ...

Open the "q3config.cfg" file (found in the "baseq3" folder)

reset the values of the following items,

seta vm_cgame "0"
seta vm_game "0"
seta vm_ui "0"

to

seta vm_cgame "1"
seta vm_game "1"
seta vm_ui "1"

The Invasion mod I downloaded won't expand so I haven't tried it on Invasion specifically, but it's worked for the Alliance and Q3f mods (Freakball worked without the change of the .cfg file).

Hope this helps someone out there.
Jon Nelson "

(Today's earlier problem report follows)
A reader reports the Invasion Quake3 mod noted in yesterday's software updates and game news page didn't work on the Mac:

" Hi Mike, I downloaded and tried the Invasion mod for Q3 and it isn't working? I keep getting this error.

'VM Compile: immediate value 33204 out of range'

then the game quits. To start I had to unzip the game using RealPC as just changing the extender to .zip was not good enough for Stuffit Expander 5.5. Once it was expanded in RealPC, I moved the folder to my Q3A folder and launched the game. I selected Invasion in the MOD selector and so far everything worked. I then tried to start a skirmish and selected bots and stuff. Then when I clicked on play is when I got the error. Did anyone get this working?
Thanks, Tom"

(More) Voodoo5 Owner Comments on Cinema4D XL Performance:
Another Voodoo5 owner replied to the earlier post (below) indicating he also saw the same problems with the Voodoo5 and Cinema4D:

" Hi.
I just wanted to say that I had the same experience with the V5 and Cinema 4D as the person who sent you the letter that you posted. I bought the card mainly to use with this program, but unfortunately I couln't find any info on the combination beforehand...

I've tried on clean installs of both OS 9.0.4 and OS 8.6 (on a beige G3), and had the same results.

BTW, I also heard from someone else that C4D has the same problems with the V3.

Anyway, since I really would have chosen the Radeon if they were released at the same time (and C4D works fine with other ATI cards), I decided that this was a good reason to return the card and wait.
Martin "

(The original report follows)
A reader comments on issues he's seen with the Voodoo5 in Cinema4D:

"I get very bizarre rendering (everything bleached out) if I turn on Open GL rendering in Cinema 4D XL 6.0. Not to mention, the frame rate drops below 1 fps vs over 30 in software mode. I was really hoping that the fast open GL in the Voodoo 5 would allow me to have fast previews in 3D programs, apparently not.
Jeremy"

He late wrote he's running a dual G4/450 with OS 9. I suggested he contact 3dfx tech support to report this as well as see if Maxon has done any testing with Cinema4D and a Voodoo5. If any other Voodoo5 owners have used Cinema4D, please contact me with your experiences and system details.

G4 Cube Owner Adds Fan Inside Case:
Although other G4 Cube owners that upgraded the hard drive with 7200 RPM drives (drive database reports here) didn't note any problems with heat, and the Apple store offers 30GB/40GB 7200 RPM drives as options, this reader noted he added a fan to avoid lockups after installing a Maxtor 30GB drive in his Cube:

" Just wanted to let you know that a put a fan inside my g4 cube. The reason that I did is was I installed a new 30gig drive in the cube, and after the cube warmed up the drive would lock up. While I was in there I noticed that there were mounting holes for a 80mm case fan. So I figured why not put a fan in there?

www.vhdesigns.com/fan_project.htm

(he later wrote when I asked for more info on the drive/problem-Mike)

I went out and bought a Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 40 - 30gig 7200rpm drive. When I put that drive into my g4 tower it works fine. The drive doesn't even get warm in the tower. I really don't care too much about the amount of heat that my cube puts out. the noise is not a problem for me since its sitting in the same room with five PCs that make a lot of noise.
-Varian
www.vhdesigns.com"

Personally, I'd not want a fan in a Cube, as one of the main points of the Cube is its quiet operation. The IBM 7200 RPM drives don't seem to be a heat problem in the Cube based on reports, but perhaps the Maxtor runs hotter than the IBM drive.

Initio Miles Ultra2 SCSI Card Firmware Update Feedback:
I wasn't aware of it, but a reader noted a recent update (dated August 00) to Initio's Miles U2 card (reviewed here last year as part of a 3 card Ultra2 card review early last year):

" There is a new firmware upgrade for Initio Miles U2W which seems to improve performance, at least under 9.0.4 (on my G3-upgraded PCC clone). My system seemed sluggish, and Norton System info seemed to confirm this (not the greatest benchmark I know). Firmware upgrade gave dramatic results:

Norton System Info
Disk System Ratings
Pre: 139
Post: 696

the new version (1.06) is listed as beta.
Here is the download link: www.initio.com/mac/mac_sd.htm

-David D'Andrea"

Initio's comments on the 1.06 beta firmware changes are:

" This firmware version addresses a very specific issue involving Seagate Cheetah 160M drives and SoftRAID. When you have a system with this configuration, SoftRAID will hang the system during the bus scan. Updating the MilesU2W firmware with this BETA v1.06 firmware will correct the issue and allow the SoftRAID bus scan to complete."

Comments on Airstation Wireless Base Station Documentation:
I posted a readers note on the Techworks Airstation with DSL/Cable Router in the news the other day. A reader replied with comments on the documentation:

" Mike,
Please add a caveat to the story about the $279.00 Airstation. While the actual hardware is not bad, the manuals and the software are absolutely unusable. I just spent about 15 hours troubleshooting a friend's set-up over the phone, and he would read sections of the manual to me just for laughs. Much of it is just Engish words stuck in random order. I can only assume that someone used babblefish to translate the manuals from Japanese. One of the networking pages out there (name escapes me at the moment) was planning on reviewing the Airstation but only recieved the Japanese manuals and has put off the review until english manuals show up.

A call to tech support garnered the response, "ignore the small manuals, only use the large troubleshooting manual". For most mac heads and even for serious networking types, figure on SEVERAL extra hours of work for the $20 you save over the Apple model.
Morgan Reed"

Hopefully the documentation will be improved. Sometimes with OEM hardware imported for sale by US companies the manuals do leave something to be desired.

Heatshrink Alternative to Thermal Compound:
If you're looking for an alternative to thermal compound, you might want to give Heatshrink a try. It's a thin, adhesive backed tape like thermal gasket that is less messy than thermal paste and claims to be very efficient at heat transfer. Based on tests with Heatshrink vs thermal compound with an iMac G4 CPU Upgrade from Newer Technology, Heatshrink seemed to work about as well as the compound I had. (Note: I carefully removed the original thermal pad on the iMac heatsink, to avoid scratching the surface of the heatsink). Heatshrink is very thin and has adhesive on both sides (it's a bit difficult to remove the two protective layers covering the adhesive) and is not really reusable, but the amount supplied is enough for several PowerPC CPUs in case you remove the heatsink later and need to reapply it.
For more details on Heatshrink see the web page at home.earthlink.net/~malibudaze/heatshrink.html.

Make a Difference: Be the Difference
Randy Mita, Brad Lau and I came up with a new slogan and theme for Mac advocacy - "Make a Difference: Be the Difference". We're asking that all Mac owners take advantage of every opportunity to let others know the Mac advantage. It's a grass-roots approach that will surely help.
