Aliens vs. Predator Demo Available:
There's a playable demo (59MB) of MacPlay's Aliens vs Predator available at GameRanger. (Hard to get connected to the FTP servers early this AM. By 8PM tonight, I had over 15 stalled/errored out downloads here today via cable modem - the last one after 10 hours and 41 minutes for 48MB of data - and thanks to their script you can't try to restart the download.)
There's a few comments on the demo from readers in this forum thread.
MacPlay will be making a special guest appearance on GameRanger this Tuesday night (September 4) at 5pm PDT / 8pm EDT to promote the launch of the Mac version of the long-awaited (for the Mac) first-person shooter. "There will be a moderated Q&A chat and prize giveaways. There will even the chance to play the guests at their own game!"

TDK VeloCD 24/10/40 IDE CDRW Drive for $149.99 on Sale (no rebates):
Although the database reports have not been great as far as Mac use on an IDE bus (there was a positive report of the drive in a Firewire case), CompUSA on Sunday listed the 24/10/40 VeloCD at $149.99 with no rebates required. That's appx. $100 less than I saw it there last week or at any local stores here. (Circuit City may price match, if that store is closer to you.) I'm not sure how long this sale price will last - check CompUSA's web site or a local store for the current pricing.

TDK VeloCD 16/10/40 IDE CDRW Drive for $79.99 after $50 rebate:
BestBuy.com on Sunday (9/2/2001) has the VeloCD 16/10/40 drive today for $129.99 before a $50 rebate from TDK. (Check their Rebates section for the $50 TDK rebate.) Check with them for how long this sale and rebate lasts.
The downside is if a local store doesn't have it, the order fees/shipping adds at least $10 to the cost (USA customers). Still, with a net price of appx $80 (before shipping/tax), that's a very good price for a retail drive like the TDK, which has a good reputation. (And it's a constant 16x write speed, unlike the Yamaha 2100 drives which have variable speeds from the inner to the outer tracks of the CD.)
(You can search the drive database here for owner reports on TDK CDRW drives - leaving mac model and interface blank will show all reports regardless of if the IDE drive was used internally or in a Firewire case, and regardless of Mac model. Or you can limit searches to just those matching your Mac model, etc. If anyone owns a TDK drive and tests it with the Toast 5.02 update, please post a drive database report. V5.02 seems to indicate better IDE CDRW support, so for those that reported problems perhaps it may help.)

Que IDE 24/10/40 CDRW Drive Sale - $99.99 after Rebates:
Sunday's CompUSA sale has a limited time special starting 9/2/2001 on internal Que IDE 24/10/40 CDRWs. This drive is listed on the box as for PCs only so I'm not sure about Mac compatibility. (If anyone tries one please post a drive database entry or email me with details). The regular price is $199.99, but as of today (Sunday 9/2) there's a series of rebates that make the next price (not including tax) $99.99. [$199.99 regular price - $30 instant savings (not sure for how long), plus a $50 mfr. rebate and $20 CompUSA rebates that both expire on 9/8/2001.] From a readers comments that noted it was listed as a QPS "1500BP" I'd guess the mechanism may be a Sanyo. (See the later news item above for links to a Beige G3 owner's report on the drive.)

Blast from the Past - News pages from 1, 2 and 3 years ago:
|
I've had several readers ask that I restore a news item that I used to call "Blast from the Past" where links to past news pages from a year, two years, etc. ago here are included in the daily news. (Sometimes these old pages are a bit embarrassing - and in many cases the offsite links may not work, and comments there were accurate on the date posted regarding upgrade availability, etc.)
