Illustrated Guide to Upgrading the PowerBook G4 Hard Drive:
I've had several readers ask if I would write a guide for PowerBook G4 internal hard drive upgrades as I did for the PB G3 Wallstreet and Firewire models. This Sunday I finally made time to write an illustrated Hard Drive Upgrade Guide for the PowerBook G4. Includes tips on securing those frustating rubber grommets and a page on drive setup (formatting). The article is also linked on the Systems page (PB section) and IDE articles page (hard drive section) for future reference. (There are previous guides there for the PB G3 wallstreet and PB G3 firewire.)

More Reports on $99.99 (net) Que 24/10/40 IDE CDRW :
I've updated the page with Mac owner comments on using the $99.99 (net price after rebates) Que 24/10/40 CDRW drive. (Reports from Beige G3, B&W G3 and G4/AGP system owners.) Based on the Toast report of a 1500 BP, the Que 24x is believed to be a Sanyo mechanism. (Note - one reader sent a note that CompUSA's specs page lists a 4MB cache, but another reader said the box notes a 2MB cache, the same as the TDK 24x drive. As noted in my Formac 12/10/32 FW drive review, Toast will report the drive's cache size also for verification.)

Note If any readers with this 24x drive or the TDK 24x ($149.99 noted in the recent news here) could time how long it takes to burn a full CD, including closing the disk with and without BurnProof enabled I'd appreciate it. Most 24x drives only write at 24x rates on the outer 1/3 of the Disc and burn-proof may increase the times to burn the CD. If you test this, let me know the details and results via email or post a drive database report.

TDK 24/10/40 CDRW in ADS Pyro Firewire Case:
Date: 9/3/2001
Drive: TDK VeloCD 24x10x40x (IDE drive in FW case)
System: G4/AGP running OS 9.2
Comments:
" I just bought my 24x10x40 with an ADS enclosure and everything worked great. I picked up the whole set for $250 from CompUSA. All I did was put the drive in the enclosure, and hook it up and using the existing drivers in both OS 9.2.1 and OS X the drive worked. Toast 5.0.2 also would burn at the full 24x speed as well as the Toast Preview Version, both would support BURN-Proof.
Shawn"

Not sure how long the $149.99 CompUSA sale will last (noted in the recent news here), but that is an amazing price. (The drive sold for $100 more at Ckt City here and most other stores.) And there's no rebate hassles. Compusa has the ADS Pyro case for $99.xx for some time now - perhaps the lower price is due to a faster bridge version coming soon, but even the original bridge is plenty fast for any CDRW or CD drive.

Another reader wrote via email with comments on the drive in a Firewire case:

" Hey Mike. I just wanted to say that I was able to grab one of these 24x/10x/40x burners today and I guess I'll be testing it for compatibility issues in the coming days.

I went to Circuit City because the closest CompUSA was out of stock. I had to go through 3 ranks in their chain of command (check-out, main counter, and manager) before they decided to call CompUSA and verify that it wasn't a special circumstance like a close-out or a misprint. They also informed me that it costs them $200 to put the drive on the shelf, so I felt kind of weird snatching it up for $150. They were nice about it though...no vicious glances or anything. That just made me feel more weird. Heh.

I placed the drive in a QPS FireWire enclosure, replacing a TEAC CD-W512E. I just successfully burned at 24x on 12x media (not recommended) in Toast 5.02, but iTunes doesn't recognize it. Hot-plugging seems a bit quirky as well. I'll put a more detailed report in the drive database after putting the drive through its paces these next couple of days.

I don't know what mechanism this burner uses. Plextor's 24x IDE drive has a 4 MB buffer while this one has half that.
Thanks for the heads-up!
Eugene Chan "

Interesting they matched the price even when it was out of stock at the local store. I think the CCity here only matches if it's in stock at the competitor, but I could be wrong. I asked Eugene if he could time burns to see how long they took. (I also asked if he used Toast's verify function on the burns to 12x rated media). I've seen 16x rated media work at 24x before and still pass a Nero verify. (PC system with a TDK 24x drive .)

TDK 24/10/40 IDE CDRW ($149.99) in G4/AGP:
The reader that posted a report on using the VeloCD 24x installed in an ADS pyro Firewire case (above) also commented on using it inside the G4/AGP system on the IDE bus.

" ...I just wanted to let you guys know that this went into my mac (via IDE) as well without a single problem. The biggest two issues was that the drive tray would catch on the original Apple spring loaded cover for the cd-rw, but other then that it was perfect. Drivers support was there, and it would also support bootable CD's (Via IDE or via FireWire). Only complaint is that it takes forever to burn an Audio CD with all the data that needs to be sent to the buffer (still burns at 24x though) ...
Shawn"

I assume he means the time it takes to copy files from the Audio CD to the hard drive (using a single drive to copy an Audio CD). There's no iTunes support for this drive that I know of so I assume he's using Toast 5.02 as he noted in the comments with the drive in a Firewire case.

Matshita Expansion Bay DVD/CDRW Drive Problem Reports:
Although the first owner comments in the build guides here were very positive (noting OK DVD playback and including a modified iTunes/Discburner support file) - I've had some recent problem reports from owners of these drives in PowerBooks. Some noted not being able to play a DVD movie (the player did not recognize the drive had the disc inserted and another reader noted the drive would not play a burned DVD-R disc. Waking from sleep also generates an error where the mac thinks the expansion bay drive was removed owners say. For more details, see the Problem Reports page.
