Retrospect Driver Update Tests with Plextor IDE CDRW:
" Dear Mike,
Just a quick note to give you an update on my testing of Retrospect 4.3 (with Driver Update & Extensions Update) and my Plextor 12/10/32A drive installed in a Beige desktop G3. I had talked to Retrospect several times asking about future compatibility with my drive and was told that they didn't have plans to support anything but Apple drives. I upgraded to 9.2.1 and got the necessary updates for use with 4.3 of Retrospect Express and voila! it worked. I have successfully backed up my drives to CDRW media and Retrospect shows my interal burner as an available backup device. I am able to use it in the background also while doing other tasks.

My G3 is originally a 266 upgraded to a 500 mhz G3 with 280mgs ram and the factory CD replaced by the Plextor drive. I thought you might like to pass this on to your readers. As always, thanks for maintaining the most informative site on the net for Macs!
Mark C."

If any readers test the Retrospect driver update with other brands of IDE CDRWs, please let me know the details (drive model, etc.) and system info.
The Retrospect driver update was listed in yesterday's news software updates (available from this Dantz page). I've added this info to the FAQ's CDROM/CDR section for future reference.

Digital Audio Extraction Rate Tests w/TDK 24x CDRW in Firewire Case:
A reader replied to my request for DAE speed tests with 24x CDRW drives in yesterday's news with a report on his TDK 24/10/40 drive in a Firewire case. (I asked to test inner and out tracks of the Audio CD):

" 500 MHz iMac DV SE
512 MB of RAM / VM Off
Mac OS 9.2.1
Toast Titanium 5.02
iTunes 1.1
TDK CDRW241040X in a QPS Que! Fire enclosure.

DAE results:

CD #1 (Chanticleer - Wondrous Love)
Track 1 (1:57) - 0:14 in Toast [appx 8.36x] - 0:20 in iTunes
Track 23 (8:29) - 0:55 in Toast [appx 9.25x] - 1:16 in iTunes

CD #2 (Chanticleer - Our Heart's Joy)
Track 1 (5:01) - 0:35 in Toast [8.6x] - 0:48 in iTunes
Track 15 (3:21) - 0:25 in Toast [12.84x] - 0:32 in iTunes

I also burned a 24x rated CD-R w/burnproof off 694.4 MB - 131 files and folders
Counting RAM caching and closing the disc, burn time was 5:56.
Eugene Chan"

If anyone has the drive on an IDE interface and runs any DAE tests, let me know the results.

Tips for Toast Interface Unstable Errors with IDE CDRW Drives:
A reader replied in a drive database report yesterday that my suggestion to disconnect the IDE ZIP (slave) drive and disable the Iomega extension solved his Toast "interface unstable" errors.
There were other reports about long IDE cables also causing problems. Just a FYI on something to try if you see errors like this with IDE CDRW drives. (The reports were from Beige G3 owners but may be of help to other IDE based Macs.)
