ID's Full OS X Return To Castle Wolfenstein MP Test Download
" After looking at all the news sites, seems Im the first to discover ID has posted a FULL Wolfenstein installer for OSX today. (1:30 PM pacific) on there FTP. I downloaded and installed it and yup, it sure is. :)
Its full 64.6 MB Mac installer Wolf test. Enjoy. :()

Mac Tech "

I did see a 66MB download there (installer file) but the server is too busy to connect... (and will be for some time I suspect.). ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/wolf/osx/. Of course this is just the MP test PC files and the MacOS X beta executables in one file but might be a later version than beta7 noted here on Friday.

Source Code for OS X/Wavelan PCcard Drivers:
(In reply to a post earlier today about OS X build 5G64 (reported to be OS X 10.1 GM) not working with the Wavelan PCcard drivers)

" Hi Mike, Here is the original source for the wireless drivers. If you read the "readme.txt", it states that there is also a project set up at Source Forge where people can get the latest code base. The driver was working up to 5G27 (if I remember correctly); not sure if it has been updated lately for build beyond "27". By the way, when I was on the apple publicsource website last night, there was a CVS tag with the name "PumaGM" ... after a little correlation work, it *appears* to be 5G64 ... no guarantees though.

If anyone can get modify/recompile this to run with 5G64/10.1, let me know.

OS X DVD Playback and Hardware Decoder Based Macs:
Until it's certain that build 5G64 is the final OS X 10.1 update, consider this just a FYI. Several users of OS X build 5G64 noted that the DVD player will not install (or run if manually copied) on Macs that have a hardware DVD decoder. (I.E. B&W G3 or Yikes G4/PCI with DVD piggyback card, Lombard G3/400 models and perhaps Wallstreet PB G3s with the DVD decoder PCCard.). The DVD Player is said to work very well with later models that use software DVD decoding (G4/AGPs, PowerBook Firewire, slotted iMacs w/DVD drives, Cubes, iBook DVD models, etc.).

Acard Partnering with Maxtor for ATA/133 Drive/Controller Support:
I noted during Macworld NY in July that Acard's ATA/100 IDE cards for Mac were going to be flash upgradeable to ATA/133. To date I've only seen one ATA/133 drive announced, which is from Maxtor and due to be released soon. (ATA/133 like previous versions is backward compatible for existing drives of course.) A reader sent a link to a September 7th Acard Press Release noting they've become a licensed partner of Maxtor's Ultra ATA/133 technology. The press release commented that Acard's ATA/133 IDE RAID card is due to be available in October.

OS X Build 5G64 (10.1) and Wavelan (Wireless Networking) PCcards:
As many of you have heard, it's said that build 5G64 is the GM build of OS X 10.1. (Very soon we will know for sure.) Most are raving about the improvements in this build (there are many - DVD player, faster disk I/O, GeForce3 drivers, CD burning in the Finder and more), but one reader noted that the PCCard Wavelan (for Airport) wirless networking driver at http://homepage.mac.com/yuriwho/ didn't work with 5G64. (It did work under OS X 10.0.4 builds.) Hopefully the author of the previous version can update it to solve this. If any readers spot a fix/update, please let me know so I can post a note here and update the OS X section of the FAQ.

Epson Comments on OS X 10.1 Printer Driver Support:
I've posted comments in the past on promises of updates to Epson printer drivers for OS X (since many models are not supported - including my Photo 870). Here's the latest comments on Epson's support page:

" Q: I've found the list of printer models that support Mac OS X, but I can't find the drivers on your website, do you have Mac OS X drivers available for download?

A: Epson's continued effort to provide our customers with a positive OS X printing experience, drivers have been included for the supported printer models on the Mac OS X CD-ROM. It is our intention to ultimately offer OS X version 10.1 drivers for the EPSON Stylus Color 740, 760, 860, 777, 880, 900, 900N, 980 and 980N, as well as the EPSON Stylus Photo 870, 875DC, 1270, 2000P, 780, 785EPX, 890 and 1280. It is also our intention to offer drivers for future desktop printer models. This fall we also plan to provide drivers for the Perfection 1250, and 1650, as well as the Expression 1680 and 1640XL scanners. "

Let's hope the updates are available shortly after OS X 10.1 is released. (The build 5G64 I've seen did not include support the Photo 870 so I assume the updates will have to be downloaded separately, unless included on one of the extra CDs with the Apple $19.95 upgrade CD set.)

Matshita Notebook Combo/CDRW Drive Master Setting Mod (Photo):
I've updated the original article on the Matshita DVD/CDRW drive in a Powerbook article to include a photo from Bill Donnelley on the pin numbering to help clarify his comments on the Master setting mod. (That drive and the 330 CDRW only model both are set to Slave, Master is the normal setting for expansion bay drives.)

More Reports on Newer Tech CPU Upgrades with Backside Cache Problems:
In the last few months I've had many emails (and cpu upgrade database reports) from owners that bought Newer Tech G3 upgrades (usually ZIFs, but not always) that cannot have the backside cache enabled. Most of these as I remember were bought from Auction sites or used. The latest updates to the CPU upgrade database includes a report from a buyer of a used Newer Tech G4/400 card with the same problem. I'm beginning to wonder if these could be defective models or returned models that were never repaired. From the reports, no software will allow enabling the backside cache (not Newer Tech's, XLR8's or Powerlogix's). I assume the backside cache is defective.
I'd suggestion caution for anyone buying a Newer Tech CPU upgrade from other than a reputable dealer with a warranty/return policy unless they can test the upgrade before buying. (By warranty I mean replacement/exchange policy - since there is no warranty repair that I know of on Newer Tech upgrades since they closed their doors earlier this year.)

Trace Tape - An Expensive Alternative to Soldering:
Posting this as a FYI to those that do hardware mods to CPU modules, etc. that require solder bridges. One popular alternative in the past has been conductive pens (i.e. windshield defogger repair kits, etc.). Another alternative (but expensive at $19.95) is Plycon's Trace Tape. It's made to bridge over AMD cpu's to unlock CPU ratios, but I suspect you could cut/trim them for other uses. They cost $19.95 for 3 strips of 4 traces each.

Another Distributed Computing Project Client for OS X:
(This may have been noted previously elsewhere but just in case)
" Mike,... A majority of your readers are mac users that are also PC literate and maybe even mac power users (this is evident in the forums)

I am currently participating in the distributed.net RC5 project but there is another distributed computing project with an OS X client that warrants mention.

At Stanford they are underway with a distributed computing project to simulate protein folding which is very processor intensive. There is an OS X client available and this project is relatively new.

If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]

  • Newer Tech G4/400 in 8600/200 (rated 5)

You can find the full reports by searching the database selecting the indicated Mac model and upgrade card brand/type. If you've upgraded the CPU on your Mac, please post an entry in the database. Search the database for entries from most every upgradable Mac model *before* you buy. (Searchable by mac model/upgrade brand). For detailed reviews with performance tests and install tips, see the CPU Upgrades page.)
