OS X 10.2 Dev Note Mentions Large IDE Drive Support
    " Mike,
Found this in the MacOS X 10.2 technote.

      " ATA
The Apple's support for connected ATA devices.

      * Large ATA hard drives (over 137 GB - 48-bit LBA addressing) are now supported on systems with large ATA drive support in the boot ROM. All changes are documented in the relevant header files in IOATAFamily.

Now, I'm not really sure which models have this support in the boot ROM, but perhaps people with access to large ATA drives would be willing to try a few different models.

    The technote URL is here.
    Mike "

From the boot rom comment, I wonder if this refers to 2002 Macs or the latest G4 towers. If anyone tries a large (160GB maxtor, etc.) drive with OS X 10.2 let me know your Mac model, drive used and what controller you're using. (onboard IDE or PCI IDE card - Acard ATA/133 card I thought had a driver update for OS X 10.1.x to enable large drive support, but I could be wrong. Intech's later HD Speedtools drivers adds large IDE drive support for onboard IDE Macs, but isn't OS X compatible.)

More Reports on Cinema DVI Problems in 10.2 after Changing Screen Modes
In Friday's news I noted a serious problem in 10.2 with the GF3/Cinema Display setup with the Cube. Other readers wrote in reply to that post that they've seen a similar problem. Here's a reader's comments on the same 10.2 problem with his DVI Cinema Display with a G4/AGP system and Radeon AGP card (so it's not graphics card/driver specific apparently).

    " Mike,
I'm glad to see I'm not alone. I just bought an open box 22" cinema display that I am using w/ a G4 450 agp radeon original mac retail model (soon to be a radeon 8500) with an apple adc/dvi adaptor, 10.2, and when I tried switching resolutions via menu bar my screen went black and the power light went into strobe mode. This continued through a restart. I freaked my new monitor was black. Not being sure how 10.2 worked i tried an old os9 standby and restarted with the shift key down and low and behold 10.2 booted in to "safe" mode, I never heard of this but it reset my monitor and everything has been fine since. I have not tried switching resolutions again yet.
On a side note another 10.2 thing I haven't seen mentioned is that when an app becomes unresponsive, as IE often does, clicking on its dock icon already shows force quit instead of quit w/o having to hold down the option key as before.
    Cheers,
    Todd "

The problem I saw immediately after the 10.2 upgrade (easily repeatable) is that after switching resolutions a few times (even in the OS X menu bar with no apps running, although it happens also in games that switch modes) - the Cinema Display (DVI model) goes black (no video). The problem appeared repeatedly although sometimes it would switch a couple of times ok, but eventually would black screen. Rebooting didn't help (I did not boot with shift key down though) - each time I fixed the problem by shutting down and disconnecting and reconnecting power to the display. (It's as if after switching modes at times the refresh rate is being set too high for the display perhaps.)
This never happened in OS 9.2.2 or in 10.1.5, but immediately showed up after the 10.2 upgrade. I've written a programmer at Apple but have not received a response yet.

OS X 10.2/iTunes3 Plugin file for Sony CRX-195A1 40x12x48x CDRW
I don't own this drive personally but two readers with the Sony CRX-195 drive in a B&W G3s noted OS 9.2 problems in the database this weekend. They said the drive worked in 10.2 (using Toast 5 I assume, since it's not supported by iTunes3 normally). A reader with a CRX-195A1 model sent a modified plugin file for 10.2/iTunes3:

    "Mike,
As I reported some days ago my Sony 195A1 didn't work properly with Mac OS 10.2. Anyway I modified the SonyCDR.device-plugin with success! Apple system profiler now reports the drive as "Fully Supported" I have with success burned in iTunes, Diskcopy, Backup and Finder.
    The modified file is attached!
    /Thomas J"

Download his modified Sony Plugin file here.

NOTE: As with all modified files - these are provided "as-is" with no warranty or support. (If you're not comfortable using the Terminal in OS X, to avoid permissions issues in OS X you may want to boot into OS 9 to replace the OS X file.)

Asante PCI Network Card Driver Updates for 10.2
(from a reader email last Friday, just getting to post it)

" I have an AsanteFast 10/100 Fast Ethernet (PCI) Adapter model 690 that was working under 10.1.5. It stopped working after 10.2 was installed and actually crashed my machine. Asante just released updated drivers and everything works great!
    Darryl Payne
    Site Developer
    Stone Oak Web Design "

I checked their main web site and found this OS X 10.2 driver link noted on the front page.
(I'll add this info to the previous page on OS X compatible PCI network card reports.)

Beta Umax OS X 10.1.5 driver for 6400/6450 Firewire Scanners
(from a reader email this weekend)

"For UMAX 6400 and 6450 (1394) Firewire scanner owners there is a WORKING beta driver on their UK website that is compatible with 10.1.5 and above. The only limitation thus far is that the front buttons on the scanner are not functioning, small issue though. I have verified that the driver is not compatible with 10.2 as the Vista Scan application quits unexpectedly shortly after launch. The driver is extremely late beta as I have scanned numerous documents, used the GUI's ability to import them into Photoshop and Entourage and it worked without a hitch. Vistascan also has the ability to export graphics formats accordingly i.e. Jpeg for email etc., it and seems very stable. After a year of waiting for a 10.1.5 compatible version I wonder how long it will be before a 10.2 compatible version is released.
    Link: http://www.umax.co.uk/support/default.htm
Love the site keep up the good work
    Thanks, Jason"

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
(Entries today will be added the following newsday. Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
