| Jaguar Tips Weblog from Apple's OS X Product Manager |
| I'm late in posting this - spotted it two days ago from a reader post in the forums:
"Ken Bereskin, Apple's Mac OS X product manager, has a weblog with Jaguar-related tips and obscure (but cool)
new features.
Today's (03 September) beefed-up screen capture tip blew me away, and the Character Palette tip from 27 August
has got to be one of Jaguar's coolest new features.
Check it out!
- Steve" |

| Microtech/ZIO Cardreader OS X 10.2 Drivers Coming/Notes on MicroTek Scanner Drivers |
| (from a reader email last night)
"Hi Mike,
According to Microtech's support (who was very friendly), 10.2 compatible
drivers should be available by "end of next week". Upon hearing that I use 10.2, we both chuckled b/c Microtech must have received so many inquiries
about this. She already knew what I was going ask question. LOL!
(Microtech should have updated their website w/10.2 issues in order to avoid
this.)
I own a CamerMate and a Zio, and was told that 10.2-compat. drivers should be released simultaneously for their various products.
I would expect Microtech to be 10.2 compat. by mid-Sept. Until then, boot
into OS9 (been a while? ;-)) and deal w/temporary inconveniences.
-Ryan"
The Drive Compatibility Database can be searched for OS X reports on cardreaders (Smartmedia, CompactFlash, and Multi-Format readers) as well as drives of any type.
While on the subject of 10.2 drivers and another "Microtek" (not Microtech) - a reader wrote expressing extreme disappointment in the fact there is no 10.2 support for his USB ScanMaker V6USL. (email from a few days ago.)
"I just received the following from Microtek "Mac Support" regarding my relatively new USB scanner (ScanMaker V6USL) and OSX 10.2.
Hello,
We do not have plans to support this model on OS X. It will
run if you boot up on OS 9.2 disk.
Thank you,
Customer Service & Consulting Group
Microtek Lab, Inc.
I guess they don't want our business.
M. Beckley Roberts"
FYI: Microtek has an OS X scanner driver release schedules page that lists several other models.

| First Reader Report on Sonnet G4/800 CPU Card Upgrade |
| I wish I had some before/after performance tests, but here's the first report from a reader in the database on the Sonnet G4/800 CPU card upgrade:
Reviewer's Name: Jim Mavrogenis Date Submitted: 9/4/2002 Rating (1 to 10): 5 Manufacturer: Sonnet G4 Rated Speed (CPU/Cache MHz): G4 800 Max Speed (CPU/Cache MHz): 800Mhz CPU, 800MHz L2, 200 MHz L3
(not adjustable) Cache Size: 256KB L2, 1MB L3 Mac Type: 8500/Sonnet G4/800 Comments: I've spent the last 3 days trying to get my new Sonnet PCI/G4 800 processor upgrade to work with AOL 5.0 in my 8500. The card works fine with the internet (IE 5.0) and all my applications: now, Virtual PC 4.02 really flies. But, when I start AOL 5.0 the Mac freezes just as the "Welcome" startup screen appears. I access AOL via my TCP/IP connection with DSL. I have 3 hard drives with different MacOS' so I was able to try different OS' to fix the problem. Nothing worked. I started with OS 9.1 and 8.6 with base extensions (even removed the Sonnet enabler & extension per Sonnet Tech support recommendation) : AOL froze at the same point in the AOL startup process. Can't turn off all extensions because AOL won't run without the base Mac OS extensions enabled.
BTW, Sonnet claims that the G4 card will work with all MacOS' from 7.5.2 thru 9.1. I could not get the Mac to boot from my MacOS 7.6 drive. "This startup dis will not work on this mac..." is the message that I see a few seconds after power on. Both Sonnet and AOL tech support have tried to help and we've tried reinstalling s/w, resetting the CUDA, but nothing works. Any ideas? I'm going to reinstall my old processer card so I can get my e-mail
Thanks
(He wrote later with another update)
Mike,
... When AOL 5 is modified per
Sonnet Tech Support discovery, i.e, remove the Appearance PPC file from the
AOL folder, AOL will start but when I log on all I can do is read my e-mail
if I have any. I can't review saved mail, can't sent mail. Basically AOL is
unusable. So, no solution. Trying to get AOL to fix the problem is hopeless.
I'm now ready to return the card. It's not ready for primetime.
BTW here are
the MacBench 5 scores: All are compared to a PPC G3/300.
Processor score: 193% vs G3 100%
Floating Point score: 253% vs G3 100%
I only ran those 2 tests but I timed how long Virtual PC 4.02 takes to load
WIN95. From start to the desktop is less than 2 minutes: actually 1min 30
secs until the startup music begins. Shutdown from WIN95 until the VPC list appears is 13 secs
Hope this helps
Jim
(About two dozen readers sent tips for AOL like deleting prefs, using AOL's webmail, trying a clean AOL install, etc.)
I'd really be interested in Before/After performance tests (apps tests, etc.) to see what performance gain in general is seen with this upgrade. If any other readers have or buy this upgrade, please run tests in apps/benchmarks, etc. before and after the upgrade and post a report in the "Rate your CPU upgrade" database. (see lower sidebar links or use the entry page link on the database search page.)

| Terminal Command to report Uni-N Revision |
I commented on the Uni-N revison requirements to run Dual CPUs in Tuesday's news page item on the Powerlogix Dual G4/800 and Dual 1GHz upgrades, mentioning the past method of using Apple System Profiler to generate a text report with hardware details that lists the revision. A reader replied with a faster way to get this info via the OS X terminal:
ioreg -l | grep -A 12 'uni-n@'
and just look at the entry called "device-rev"
Charles
"
Note - Lionel of macbidoulle (french site) later sent a note that he posted a utility to check this without using the terminal. See this page.

| Reader Comments on DVD Playback on 2nd Monitor of Dual Head Card |
"Thought people might be interested in this, especially those with
powerbooks trying to display DVD's to a 2nd display. I've found a way
to finally do this. By accident while playing with my newly flashed
8500 and watching DVD's thru transparency's, I found that on 10.2 with
"Virtual Desktops" from Codetek (website product page here) installed I'm able to drag the playing
DVD movie to any desktop, and any monitor on the system and watch them.
The only thing that you're not able to do is move the window while it's
playing on the second desktop, but you can resize to full any size,
including full screen.
Not sure if this is something that came about
by having the 8500 instead of two rage 128's, if it's a QE thing, or if
this worked before with 10.2 and I just never played with it to try.
Don't really feel like sticking the rage 128's back in to check but it
does work the way things are now.
Brian"

For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
(Entries today will be added the following newsday. Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
