| No Chance of IBM Power4 Based CPUs in Future Macs? |
| (from a reader's post in the forums yesterday, clip from a mail list. Name
later removed for privacy reasons.)

Subject: IBM Power4
Folks,
I attended a briefing today on IBM's high performance computing technology,
which is hinged on their Power4 CPU (this CPU has awesome performance in the
various real-world benchmarks I have seen). After the briefing, I asked the
presenter (a chief engineering manager from IBM) about the Power4 derivative
for desktops and low end servers to be announced in October. You may recall
that there has been speculation that this CPU would find its way into
PowerMacs in the future. Well, it sounds like this CPU is not in Apple's
future -- the "over 160" vector instructions are not AltiVec (even though
AltiVec has 162 instructions), and there are technical issues that would
prevent AltiVec from ever marrying with Power4 or its successors.
Furthermore, the guy came right out and said that they have pitched the
desktop Power4 to Apple, but Apple was not interested.
So, although Power4-based PowerMacs seemed like a promising (and likely)
possibility, it looks like it won't happen. I guess we will have to wait
and see what Apple has in store for the future . . . . (name removed)

| SiN Gold Updater 1.1.3 adds OS X Support, Bug Fixes |
| It's an old game, but today MacUpdate lists a 1.1.3 updater that adds OS X support and a long list of changes. (I assume the bugs listed have been fixed, not added as the text noted on the page.)
SiN Gold Updater ports the game so that it runs on MacOS X.
Version 1.1.3 adds (in some cases I assume it fixes) the following:
- Cannot assign "USE" key in InputSprocket.
- Launching SiN generates the following error message: "The Application "SiN" could not be opened, because "SiN" could not be found."
- Game crashes when a movie plays on a multi monitor system, and one of the video cards is a 3dfx Voodoo card.
- Game crashes with a type 12 error on video card/monitor configs that don't support gamma (Voodoo 3/5 with the Apple 15" display).
- If Extensions folder is not called "Extensions" (as
- in some localized versions of MacOS), SiN couldn't find the Indeo plug in.
- SiN crashes intermittently with a "Type 2" error.
- Pulse Rifle in Wages of SiN displayed incorrectly.
- When logging into a server that has a map that you don't have. SiN will begins downloading the map, then gives a "Rename Failed" error.
- After winning Wages of SiN, video mode defaults to 1024x768.
- Saved games from Wages of SiN conflicting with SiN saved games.
- When selecting a video mode larger than your desktop mode, a window is created that only contains a portion of the game screen.

| Another Reader Report on Sonnet G4/800 CPU Card Upgrade |
| One of today's additions to the "Rate your CPU upgrade" database included a 2nd reader report on the Sonnet G4/800 CPU card upgrade from an 8600 owner. He also noted the AOL 5 problem that the first owner reported yesterday.
Reviewer's Name: Ed Newman Date Submitted: 9/5/2002 Rating (1 to 10): 9 Manufacturer: Sonnet G4 Rated Speed (CPU/Cache MHz): G4 800/200 Max Speed (CPU/Cache MHz): (not adjustable) Cache Size: L1 32kInst/Data, L2 256KB, L3 1MB Mac Type: 8600/200 Comments: This is the same computer that I upgraded with a XLR8 G4 card and reported on 6/11/2001. The computer is a Power Mac 73/8600 Series running OS 9.1. Norton Testing Info Technology benchmark comparisons are shown here for the 8600 with the Sonnet G4/800 Crescendo upgrade, the XLR8 G4/450 upgrade, and a new G4/800 MP computer running with a similar SCSI configuration except that its OS is 9.2.2
Each of the tests were run with the same cache and video settings specified by Norton.
Results were:
FPU 1411, 1164, 1367;
Disk 1718, 1540, 1862;
CPU 1998, 1116, 1913, respectively.
The 8600's desktop functionality and feel is now remarkably close to the G4/800 MP computer except for those applications like MOTU Digital Performer that take advantage of the dual processor capability. [and much higher memory bandwidth of the SDRAM based Macs. Norton's simple benchmark is not a true indicator of overall system performance of course.-Mike]
As noted by an individual in a previous report regarding the Sonnet G4/800 upgrade, I also am not able to access AOL after the upgrade. The computer freezes instantly when I try to go on line. I haven't contacted Sonnet yet because the 8600 is not a computer that I usually use for the internet.
The upgrade software and card installation took about ten minutes and booted flawlessly. Hopefully, Sonnet will have a fix for the AOL problem shortly because this card appears to be a winner!
Several readers (over 2 dozen) sent suggestions for the AOL 5 problem yesterday. (Suggestions for Jim included using the AOL webmail feature, deleting prefs, reinstalling AOL 5, trying AOL v4.0, etc. ) Jim commented in his updated report that the tip to remove the Appearance PPC file wasn't a usable solution. (He later said he could not send email, etc. without that file - see Jim's updated database report for more details.)
For a summary list of all of today's added CPU upgrade reports, see the daily listing below.

| Reader Comments on MicroTek Scanner use in Classic |
| (in reply to a reader's comments in yesterday's news on no 10.2 support for his Microtek V6USL USB scanner)
"Mike,
Just thought I'd let you know that although there's no native 10.2
support for a Microtek V6USL scanner, it works just fine for me in the
Classic environment. I'm using the latest OS 9 drivers and ScanWizard
5.74. It has worked for me since 10.1.5. Ironically, it works better
this way. When booted into 9, I tend to get garbled images after about
5-6 scans, and only a reboot fixes it. When using the scanner in X
through Classic, things work just fine scan after scan. I'm not sure
why that's the case, but it's what I observed.
I originally noticed on Microtek's web site
(
www.microtekusa.com/macosxclassic.html) that they have a list
of scanner models that worked in X under Classic, and that the X12USL
was listed as compatible. I gave it a shot since the X12USL and V6USL
are remarkably similar. Given that things work well so far, I hope that
when the X12 is natively supported, we'll be able to find a workaround
for the V6 as well.
-Bill"
As a FYI, I posted a link in yesterday's news to Microtek's OS X scanner driver release schedules page.

[If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
(Entries today will be added the following newsday. Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
