Comments on G4 MDD Systems not adequately cooling CineWave card
(from a reader email - I also wrote Promax about this, see below.)
    "Hi Mike,
Thought you might find this interesting. This was an email from Promax Sales. I'm sending you items 2 & 3. (Item 1 announced a Promax on-site sale of cancelled, demo and returned items (including G4s and lots of video equipment).)

Item 2 was what caught my eye (new G4s too hot for CineWave card)
    regards, Brucie

    *******
2 - CineWave and The New G4/1000DP DDR Apple Computers:
The design of the new G4/1000DP DDR Macintosh computer places the PCI cards in the top of the computer, The new design does not move enough air around the cards. The Pinnacle CineWave card overheats. Our tests show it running as much as 30 degrees centigrade over its specified limit of 40 degress centigrade. This excessive heat causes the card to fail within a few hours. The CineWave is the only card that we have tested to overheat in the new computers. ProMax recommends the previous G4/1000DP for CineWave. Having learned about the heat issue we searched for previous G4/1000DP's and found about 40 of them. They are stable, proven, plus have a reduced price. If interested please call our sales department for a CineWave SD or HD system quote.

    (Comment on Kona Card follows)

3 - AJA Kona Uncompressed SD and The New G4/1000DP DDR Apple Computers:
The new G4/1000DP DDR Macintosh computers have three ATA ports. It is possible to add four 120 GB IBM ATA drives, plus keep the boot drive and the SuperDrive. Stripe the four drives using OSX 10.2 and the data rate is high enough for SD including Realtime previews. Our cost for installing the four drives is under $900 when purchasing a system from us. You can store 5.28 hours of 8-Bit SD and 4.30 hours of 10-Bit. This is remarkable. Before this one had to spend several times this amount for SCSI drives. There is no heat problems with Kona in the new G4/1000DP DDR computer. For more information please call our sales department. "

When they say a 4 drive stripe plus the boot drive - I guess they are putting the boot drive as a 2nd drive off the optical ATA/33 bus. (Since the 4 drive stripe would be using up all the drive connections on the ATA/100 and ATA/66 interfaces and I doubt they'd use the ATA/33 bus for one of the stripe set drives.)
I wrote Charles McConathy of Promax about the heat issue and he replied:

" YES THIS IS CORRECT...A HEAT ISSUE WITH NEW G4/1000DP DDR model with CineWave only. Not near enough air moving in the top of the computer to keep the CineWave card within temp spec. Apple and Pinnacle are both aware and working to address the issue. We bought a bunch of older G4/1000DP which do not have the problem. I trust that Apple will fix the issue before the G4/1.25 GHz model ships.

(I asked to confirm the boot drive would be slaved off the Superdrive in the configuration noted in #3 above-Mike)

You are correct. The key here is to properly mount the boot drive in the lower optical bay and be able to use the cable for both. The fan that pulls air out of the optical bay area does a good job - no heat problem. And for booting reasons this port is fast enough as well. I would not want to use this port for a project with a complex time line. With video you want your boot drive and application to be separate from video data anyway.
If any questions let me know...
    Charles F. McConathy

OS X 10.2 Support file for Teac DW-224 Notebook Combo Drive
Stefan Horn sent a copy of his modified Teac plugin file for OS X 10.2 to support the Teac DW-224 Combo drive (24x10x24x + 8x DVD ROM). He had posted a drive database report this weekend, using the drive in an expansion bay of his Powerbook G3 2000. (Drive wasn't bootable he said.)
NOTE: As with all modified files - these are provided "as-is" with no warranty or support. These files replace the existing files of the same name.

OS X 10.2/iTunes3 Support file for Sony CRX-175E2 CDRW Drive
Mike Walsdorff sent a modified Sony plugin file for OS X 10.2 to enable iTunes3 support for the Sony CRX-175E2 24x10x40x CDRW drive. I've updated the previous FAQ CDROM/CDR section item on this drive to include a link to this file for future reference. (Previously had links to OS 9 and OS X 10.1.x files).
Like all 'unofficial' mod. files - they are provided as-is with no warranty or guarantee. (You can't replace the existing file under OS X due to permissions unless you use the terminal to enable root user, or do a get-info on the file to change permissions temporarily, or just reboot into OS 9 and replace the file.)

Grackle Probe X 1.3 Update for 10.2
Macupdate lists Grackle Probe X 1.3 today.

    What's New:
The kext is now compiled twice: once for 10.1.5 and one more time for 10.2.0. The 10.1.5 version should work on at least all of 10.1.x, but should also work on 10.0.x. Loading mechanism changed to work as a StartupItem, or standalone by using the GrackleProbe script or the Resources/grackletool command line program.

For more info on this PCI controller tweak for Beige G3 and B&W G3/G4 PCI macs (same chip used in the iMac 233-333 and PB G3 wallstreet-lombards, but they have no PCI slots of course, although the graphics chip is a PCI device), see this August 29th news story.

For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
(Entries today will be added the following newsday. Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
