Reader notes Maxtor 160GB Fully Recognized with DDR G4
Apple noted in the dev. docs ( see Sept. 2nd 2002 news here) that OS X 10.2 supported 48 bit addressing on certain macs with support in the ROM, but didn't specify what Mac models. (i.e. if it was only with the new MDD G4s - I'm talking about the onboard IDE controller, not an ATA/133 card, etc..) A reader with a new DDR G4 noted that a Maxtor 160GB drive was fully utilized.

    "Greetings:
We just got a new Power Mac G4 with dual 866 MHz CPUs here at the University of Mississippi Physics Department. We tested its EIDE buses with a 160 GB Maxtor disk. The Power Mac sees the full capacity of the disk and passes the 137 GByte (28-bits x 512 byte) limit that that has been standard on all but a few of the newest PCs. These large disks might work in the Xserve as well. And since the new limit is 48-bits x 512 bytes, Maxtor's new 320 GB should work too. They have 4 platters, 3 year warranties, and an estimated million hour average life. See Maxtor's 9 September 2002 announcement.

(linked in Tuesday's news item on Maxtor's MaxLine drives w/up to 320GB capacities.-Mike)

    University of Mississippi "

I asked if the drive was fully recognized when booting into OS 9 also.
This means the Maxtor Maxline should be fully utilized (full capacity recognized/usable) on the new G4s onboard IDE without any addon drivers.
I've not gotten any reports yet of older (pre-DDR G4) Macs running 10.2 with large (>128GB) drives on the onboard IDE to see if they fully support the drive's full capacity. (As mentioned before here, there have been FW case bridges, ATA/133 cards and drivers like Intech's (OS 9 only for those drivers) that fully support large drives - what I'm looking for are reports using the onboard IDE controller - not a PCI IDE card, or FW case, or using Intech's v6 drivers that add support for any IDE mac in OS 9 - I know those options work to add large drive support.)

Modified 10.2 Support File for USB Plextor PX-S88TU CDRW
(from a reader email/drive database report)

After submitting the report (in the drive database here) I surfed around your excellent site some more, and found out how other Plextor drives have been made to work by editing the driver file.
I did the required editing at /System/Library/Frameworks/DiscRecording.framework
    /Versions/A/Resources/DevicePlugIns/PlextorCDR.device-plugin
and now have a working CD-RW drive.
The edited plugin for OS X is available at http://users.utu.fi/jari/tmp/Plextor-PX-S88TU.tar.gz if you want to make it available.

Thanks for providing all that useful data to the Macintosh community!
    Jari Lehtonen
    Unix & Network Services
University of Turku, Computing Center "

FYI - this plugin is for 10.2 only - 10.2 plugins do not seem backwards compatible with 10.1.x (or vice version).
NOTE: As with all modified files - these are provided "as-is" with no warranty or support. These files replace the existing files of the same name and to avoid permissions issues in OS X you may want to boot into OS 9 to replace the OS X file, or use the terminal as root. Although option is to get info on the plugin file and temporarily change permissions.)

For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
(Entries today will be added the following newsday. Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
