Pioneer DVD Recorder Firmware Updates to Address Overheating Issue with High-Speed DVD Media
(Updated with more info on the future Mac firmware updaters - see below)
A reader sent a note that Pioneer has a page noting an overheating (w/possible drive damage) issue with their DVD recorder drives when using the new high speed (4x rated DVD-R/2x rated DVD-RW) DVD media. Here's a clip from Pioneer's page on the issue:

    "The source of the problem is a firmware "bug" in certain Pioneer DVD-R/RW recorders and drives, and not with the high-speed media itself. As a result, use of the new high-speed discs for recording on these particular Pioneer products may cause damage to both the loaded disc and to the drive/recorder. The following drives and recorders may be affected:

    * Pioneer DVR-7000 DVD recorder
    * Pioneer PRV-9000 Professional DVD recorder
    * Pioneer DVR-A03 computer drive
    * Pioneer DVR-103 computer drive
    * Pioneer DVR-A04 computer drive
    * Pioneer DVR-104 computer drive

    In addition to the above models, certain OEM computer systems containing Pioneer-manufactured DVD-R/RW drives are affected. (Note - as you probably already know, the "Superdrive" shipped in Macs is an OEM version of the DVR-A03/103 (original model) or DVR-A04/104 (the later model) drive. V1.90 is the updated version for the DVR-103/A03, DVR-104/04 is v1.31 (*Note* the Sept. 17th posted DVR-104/A04 version was 1.31, but as of October 4th, the link there shows 1.32), and reportedly Apple shipped superdrives (DVR-104/A04) in DDR G4s have the fix already if the firmware version is A227 or later. A early shipped (in August) dual 1GHz DDR already had version A227 in the drive.-Mike)

    Anyone who owns or uses any of the above-listed products should conduct the free firmware update immediately, prior to using the new high-speed media."

See DVD-R/RW Computer Drives and DVD Recorders Download Page for more info on the issue and a list of download links, including notes on drive Firewire (1394) case mounted drives (the updater works with them also if running Windows ME, 2000 or XP they say, as well as USB 2.0 cased drives). As I'm typing this there's no Mac updaters at the link there yet (it notes 'under construction') but hopefully will be soon.

I used a PC to apply the 1.31 firmware update to a Firewire cased Pioneeer DVD-R 104 drive (OWC's Firewire DVD recorder drive reviewed here in early August). (I have not yet applied the 1.32 firmware that is there as of Oct. 4th, but plan to.) I don't have any high speed (4x rated DVD-R/2x rated DVD-RW) media yet I may soon and I hope there are no negative side-effects otherwise.
Cnet also has a related story on the issue.
Update - a reader sent an email saying Pioneer told him the Mac updaters will be posted in a few weeks:

    "Hello Mike,
    I spoke to a Pioneer rep at the phone number that they provided on their site. He said that the Mac patch will be available through Apple in around three weeks.

Update - here's more info on the mac updater (From a reader email):

    " (from)

    Q. What will be on the DVR-A03/103 and DVR-A04/104 firmware update disc?
    A. The firmware update disc will contain both PC and Mac versions of the firmware update utility for the DVR-A03/103 and DVR-A04/104. Note: The Mac version is for after market drives not the Mac Superdrive.

    This makes it sound like the firmware updater that will be on the free CD will have a Mac updater NOT for (Apple OEM) Superdrives. (the drives physically are the same - but the DVR-104/A04 models in Macs now have "A" series firmware typically, where the retail drives have firmware with 1.xx numbers. In fact I hear DVR-A04/104 boxed drives in the normal channels have been shipping with the 1.31 update already.-Mike) Makes me think this is the one to use... Although, for long term compatibility I would think running the Apple-supplied updater (when it comes) would be better - if it will actually work!

Firewire Drive Sleep Problems in OS X 10.2
A reader sent a note about an Apple forum thread on problems with some Firewire hard drives spinning down (sleep mode) in 10.2. (A FW drive database report yesterday from an iMac G4 owner noted the same problem with a FW hard drive in 10.2). The comments there are that 10.2's energy saver drive sleep setting only refers to the boot OS X drive (not any other drives, even on the same bus?) and unlike in OS X 10.1.x, setting the Energy saver to not sleep drives may have no effect on other drives. (Including CD/CDRW/DVD drives, Firewire drives, etc.).

One reader in that thread noted he didn't have the problem with his OWC Firewire drive (if it spun down it would spin back up, OWC later wrote to say their current 911 bridge firmware is designed for this) but I wonder if the often heard problems with Superdrives in the past that were fixed by disabling drive sleep will now be a problem again in 10.2. If any Superdrive owners (either internal or in a Firewire case) can comment on this let me know or better yet, post a drive database report on it. (include details on your system, OS version and drive/interface in reports) Thanks.

Reaction Quake 3 2v2 Tournament w/Prizes
(from Monk's email to me today)
" Reaction Quake 3 is a Q3A mod that is compatible with Q3A on the Mac. 'ell, 4 of our team members are primarily Macintosh users! If this is your first time checking out Reaction Q3, you will want to download the full 2.25 zip from the download page on our website, The zip is around 200 MB or so. If we don't have the 2.25 zip up in time you can get the 2.2 zip and then extract the 2.25 update zip on top of it. We've had Mac-specific installers in the past but our regular Mac installer maker guy hasn't had time to do so lately. Sorry for the inconvenience. :\
You can play with bots locally in deathmatch or teamplay or you can play online. 'ell, the tournament prizes have PowerPCs inside of 'em, how can you not like it?

Thanks to the wonderful turnout and the quick filling of slots during the first day of registration, there are now over 80 teams signed up for the Reaction Quake 3 ( 2v2 Tournament sponsored by Activision (, nVidia (, the OGL (, Speakeasy (, and TsN (! Reaction Rumble ( registration is open until Saturday so any teams who want to compete should go ahead and sign up--if there are enough teams there is a very realistic possibility of having the tournament doubled in size!
Everyone head on over to and sign up! For those who have never registered with OGL, to make a team to join Reaction Rumble you must first 1) register with OGL, 2) make a CLAN, 3) make a TEAM within the CLAN, and 4) sign up the TEAM. You can sign up with only one player and get another to join in the next few days--that should give people time to get familiar with OGL, RQ3, and how to sign up. The prizes can be found here:

Gimp-Print 4.2.2 for Jaguar
(from the press release)

    " Release announcement: Gimp-Print 4.2.2 for Jaguar is available now as a standard Mac OS X installer package! This is the final release of Gimp-Print 4.2.2. Please see the new webpage for Mac users at for up-to-information and downloads.

    Included in this latest release is the file "How to Print with Gimp-Print," an easy-to-follow, illustrated guide for setting up and using the Gimp-Print printer drivers in Mac OS X. This guide includes instructions for printing directly from applications that generate PostScript code, such as Appleworks, and most Adobe Applications. Please see the release notes included with the installer for a complete list of changes.

    Product Description: High Quality open-source printer drivers for Epson, Canon, Lexmark, and HP printers. The Gimp-Print printer drivers act as plugins to the CUPS printing spooler built-in to Mac OS 10.2 Jaguar. All earlier versions of Mac OS do not contain CUPS and are therefore not compatible with Gimp-Print. Gimp-Print provides excellent drivers for many printers that are otherwise unsupported on Mac OS X (almost every Epson inkjet!). Even for printers with available vendor-supplied drivers the Gimp-Print drivers often provide superior results . The Gimp-Print drivers will print to any supported printer via USB, TCP/IP (including through inexpensive parallel-port print servers), and even to shared Windows printers via SAMBA. "

If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
(Entries today will be added the following newsday. Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
