| Updated HP 950 (900 series) AIO Printer Drivers for 10.2 (and OS 9) |
Last week I noted the HP page stating there were no AIO series printer drivers for 10.2 and to check their printer updates page in the future for updates. (Which as of today still didn't show this driver update, and looped back and forth to the search page for me in OS X 10.2.1/IE 5.2... frustrating.) I don't remember getting any HP emails on any driver updates since then, but reader Wladi Turkewitsch sent a link to an HP page listing the 900 Series v4.6.2 (38.3MB) download. (I've not tried it personally - hopefully it does work well with 10.2.1)
Here's a clip from the page (see their linked page for full installation info - they suggest you uninstall any prev. version.)
"
Release date: 17-Sep-2002 - Version: 4.6.2
All customers are strongly encouraged to update their current Macintosh software to this latest version.
This version provides improved support, increased stability, greater
functionality and a wide range of bug fixes. Once downloaded, please read the ReadMe.htm file for a more complete list of changes.
The following is a list of operating systems supported as of the release date for this software version:
* Mac OS 9.1 to Mac OS 9.2.2
* Mac OS X 10.1 to Mac OS X 10.2
Installation Instructions
HP recommends you uninstall any previous version of your HP All-in-One software before proceeding."
Note - there's also a 700 series AIO driver update also (check Versiontracker or Macupdate.com). |

| Comment on Maya Versions and 10.2 Compatibility |
"
Hi Mike,
A reader mentioned that "Maya 3.5.1 at work and OS 10.2.1 causes a couple of redraw errors in the preference dialog box. Text disappears. My limited amount of RAM maybe causing some of these issues". This is not the case. It is actually Maya itself. Neither Maya 3.5 nor 3.5.1 will work on OS 10.2.0 nor 10.2.1. Alias|Wavefront knows about this problem and have it mentioned in there Qualification Charts. Only Maya 4.5 will work with OS 10.2 or later.
I don't work for Alias|Wavefront, but am a user of Maya and have had that same problem. Upgrading fixed it. Just thought ya might like to know :)

| Report on DDR G4 Systems won't boot with LynxTWO-C Audio Card Installed |
| (from a reader email yesterday)
"
Hi Mike,
Took delivery of a new 867 MHz DP Mac last week.
First thing I did was move my LynxTWO-C (arguably the cleanest audio i/o interface on the market) from my previous Mac to the new machine.
Pressed the power switch - nothing! The power indicator just flashed and then extinguished! Remove card - all is ok. Couldn't get the machine to start with the card installed (tried it in all 4 open PCI slots).
Considering what next to do, I took the card to the nearest Apple Store (at Short Hills). "Martin," at the Genius Bar, was kind enough to test the card in a new DP 1 GHz machine. Same result!
I called Apple tech support with this information. The reply was essentially that, given that the card worked in an earlier Mac, it "must be incompatible with the new computer." Easy to say (and I suppose expected); but I'm the one who is out the cost of the computer (and incidentally, this audio card costs almost as much as the computer). (Over $1100 for the "C" model-Mike) Question remains - is the problem the computer or the card?
Perhaps the PCI bus current drain is monitored during power-up, and aborts if too high. However, I believe that such limiting is set too
conservatively: if I sleep the computer, then "hot-plug" the card (the PCI bus power is "off" upon sleep - checked with a voltmeter), wake the computer, and restart (so that the card is recognized), the card performs flawlessly! (FYI - it is not recommended to hot swap PCI cards, as even in Sleep.-Mike)
I conclude that the card is *not* drawing excessive power, and that it *is* compatible with the computer - otherwise, how could the above work? (There may be other PCI cards that might prevent the Mac from starting up, as well.)
Unfortunately, this "procedure" does not survive power-off restarts or
(surprisingly) subsequent system sleep.
I have had to perform this cumbersome procedure many times over the past several days to install other cards, storage, etc. in the transition to the new machine. This has become intolerable.
I have been in contact with the card vendor (lynxstudio.com).
(page with this card is http://lynxstudio.com/lynxtwo.html-Mike) Apparently, they have called their contact at Apple numerous times in an effort to resolve the situation (and the calls have gone unreturned).
I sincerely hope Apple is able to correct this problem.
Rob
(he later wrote)
The machine doesn't even *begin* to power up. I checked the 5V logic supply with an oscilloscope. It rises to 3V after 10 ms, dances around, then dies.
Besides, the card worked fine in an earlier mac, and I know of folks with DP 500 MHz and SP 500 MHz Macs running the card without problems.
I enclose a few scope traces of the 5 V bus on the Mac motherboard, with and without the LynxTWO.
As you can see, the power stabilizes within 10 ms (without LynxTWO), but with the card installed the bus voltage starts to dance around when it hits about 3 V before giving up the ghost (the remainder of the trace just shows an asymptotic RC falloff to 0 V).
"
I checked the PowerMac G4 DDR manual for notes on PCI cards and found:
- (Page 86) "PCI slots can accommodate mixed voltage (5v,12v or 3.3v) cards with 32bit or 64bit data widths and 33mhz freq.
All 5 slots (4 pci + AGP) not to exceed 90W."
(I doubt this card's actual operating power use is too high, since it worked in past Macs.)
- (Page 106) max power consumption by 4 PCI cards is 60W total (this is the same max power usage spec'd for the G4 Quicksilver models.)
I downloaded the Lynx audio PCI card's PDF specs file but did not see any notes on card power usage. I'm posting this as a FYI and warning to other DDR G4 owners about what appears to be a severe compatibility issue with this card. (The CineWave card is also not recommended for use in the new G4s due to overheating and card damage as noted by Promax in a news post here last week.)

| Final Cut Pro 3/OS X 10.2.1 Issues? (Updated with Replies) |
| (from a reader email, added to the 10.2.1 reports page also. See below for later reader replies to this post)
"
Hello Mike,
As for your 10.2.1 update feedback, I would like to add a bug we
ourselves are experiencing, which is not fixed by 10.2.1 (like I hoped).
Machine: G4 QuickSilver DP 800
Memory: 1250 MB (also tried 1000 MB)
OS: 10.2.x (probably present before that but not this severe)
Application: Final Cut Pro 3.0.2
Additional Hardware: Aja Kona SD, ATTO SCSI, Stealth serialport.
Description:
Final Cut Pro unexpectedly quits when using the timeline extensively.
Happens when using 10bit uncompressed video but also when using DV
material but less frequently. Problems also occur on an identical
machine with or without the Kona card.
At the IBC tradeshow Apple confirmed this problem (they stated it
occured on several FCP setups).
I would like to know if there are more people with fine working
pre-jaguar setups that are now experiencing problems.
Greetings,
Igor

Reader replies to this post follow:
"
I had similar crashes, especially when working in RTOffline mode. I
have a G4 dual 533 setup with 640 RAM, FCP 3.02 and 10.1.5. I went to
full DV mode when I went to 10.2 and the crashes dropped by 10 to 1 -
about once every 5 hours or so now. Went to 10.2.1 and it has not
crashed for the last 4 hours. Can't claim improvement yet, but it is
certainly no worse.
Regards,
Jim"
Another FCP user commented:
"
I, also was unable to play an entire 27 minute timeline the whole way through FCP 3.0.2 with Mac OS X 10.2 or with 10.2.1. After about ten minutes the application "unexpectedly quits". I have three crash logs (they are, as I discovered later, not kernel panics, only crash logs) here:
http://www.nwlink.com/~douglasm/Panic1.html
http://www.nwlink.com/~douglasm/Panic2.html
http://www.nwlink.com/~douglasm/Panic3.html
I've had more than thirty crashes since updating my computer to Mac OS X 10.2, but I erased my OS X partition and re-installed everything so I only have the three logs left now. I have two threads in the Apple Support Discussions, one in the Final Cut Pro forum (now that it's back since the "unexpected maintenance" last Saturday & Sunday) and one in the OS X \ UNIX forum.
My setup: 450MHz G4 Cube, Western Digital 120GB "Special Edition" hard drive, 1GB RAM, Mac OS X 10.2 and 10.2.1, Final Cut Pro 3.0.2, Sony DVMC-DA2 used for video out to preview on the TV.
I had a very simple 27 minute project that I was unable to get out of my Cube after editing. I could not play the entire project and record it on the VCR through my converter and I could not send it back to the DV camera that recorded the original video because it would not play long enough to get the entire project. I ended up playing the first ten minutes back to the camera, then playing the middle ten minutes back to the camera and then playing the last ten minutes back to the camera (stopping each time after FCP crashed). Then I imported my project's three parts into iMovie and re-assembled the three parts. Then I was able to send the complete 27 minute movie back to the camera and/or to my VCR through the converter. ARGH!...
-Doug
"
Another FCP/10.2 user's comments:
"
I've had two problems with FCP in 10.2 (neither fixed by 10.2.1 as far
as I can tell):
1. Audio dropouts that tend to occur in an audio clip when another
audio clip in the timeline begins/ends. (For example, a music track
with a voiceover that comes in for a moment.) Mixing audio down
actually made this problem worse, not better.
2. I have a program with 12 video layers that refuses to playback in
realtime. In fact, it starts doing very strange things. This happens
even though all video is rendered and even in places where only a
single video track has any video on it. (The other 11 tracks are only
used for a couple of fancy titles.)
This is especially annoying because the FCP team has absolutely no
official way to provide bug feedback. (As opposed to the MacOS X team,
which has their feedback page.) Who knows if they're even aware of the
problem.
Wayne F

If any other FCP 3/OS X 10.2.1 users have any tips or suggestions, email reports here. (I can't personally reply to
all mails right now, but thanks to all that send info.)

| OS X 10.2.1/iTunes3 Support file for TDK 32x10x40x CDRW Drive |
Ben V. sent a modified TDK plugin file for OS X 10.2.1 and the TDK 32x CDRW drive.
I've updated the FAQ CDROM/CDR section item to include a link to this file for future reference. Like all 'unofficial' mod. files - they are provided as-is with no warranty or guarantee. (You can't replace the existing file under OS X due to permissions unless you use the terminal to enable root user, or do a get-info on the file to change permissions temporarily, or just reboot into OS 9 and replace the file.)

| Retrospect 5 driver update 3.0 |
| Versiontracker last night listed a The download file Readme says (as usual, no exact details on changes/fixes/devices added with the update)
"
This driver update is a plug-in extension for Retrospect 5.0 or Retrospect
Express 5.0. It updates Retrospect or Retrospect Express to support new
drives, fix bugs, and work around problems. For a list of devices supported
by this driver update, point your web browser to
http://www.dantz.com/index.php3?SCREEN=options
"
Dantz has a
Known Incompatible Storage Devices with Mac OS X (not all listed however) and a searchable Hardware Compatibility page for storage devices with Mac OS X/Retrospect.
BTW - one reader sent a clip from a email about Dantz saying that there are problems with all of Adaptec's SCSI card/drivers for OS X (all versions including 10.2) that could lead to problems/data corruption. I've written an Adaptec contact to comment on that. (If he's still with the company ...)

| PowerLogix Cache Control X 2.1b4 (L2 cache enabler) |
| Powerlogix yesterday released an update to their L2 cache enabler (not for use with L3 cache upgrades). No info there on what was changed however but I wrote PL who said:
"
It's identical to b3 except if the user doesn't install properly it
will give an error message. Just a temporary thing until an installer
is finished.
"
If you have beta3 already installed, sounds like there's no need for it. If not, see
Powerlogix downloads page.
(The L3 cache enabler for the G4/800 to 1GHz upgrades is listed on this page but it's not been updated recently.)
