More Photos/info on Sony Airport Slot Compatible Wireless card
The August 30th news page here had a news item on using a Sony PCWA-C150S in an Airport Card Slot that worked in OS 9 and OS X 10.3 (tested in an eMac's airport card slot) which linked to a .Mac photo gallery of the card and antenna mods. Today a reader from Japan sent a link to his .Mac page with photos of the same card.

New Wireless Driver for Prism USB devices
(from a reader mail)

" Hi Mike,
A newer driver (version 1.4.7) for D-Link's DWL-122 has surfaced, with excellent functionality and many nice surprises. Over the last year or so, a lot of bad press and flaming forum posts from Mac users have accumulated for D-Link's DWL-122. The problems seem to have been with the driver. I (personally) and many others had freezes so often with the 1.3.2 and 1.3.1 versions, but 1.4.7 seems to have those licked.

An interesting thing about D-Link's latest, version 1.4.7, (see drivers page) , it seems to recognize _many_ different Prism-based devices, and not just D-Link's. (The driver is probably done by Intersil (the chip mfr), not D-Link) If you look at the extension 'Intersil Prism2.kext", specifically at the Info.plist, you will see not just the DWL-122 listed in the IOKitPersonalities, but also at least 5 other USB Prism units - the Netgear MA111, and a MicroSloth USB Wireless device, to name a few. (there's a previous article here I did on editing the plist for Airport compatibility with MS's 802.11g PCI card. But with natively compatible 802.11g cards for under $40, it's not really worth it.-Mike)

I am currently using the Netgear MA111 with the 1.4.7 driver. It behaves very well now, with no freezes, panics, or dropped connections - after 2 days of heavy use. The driver seems stable (finally!!!) and now suddenly it doesn't need to be altered to work with USB wireless devices other than the DWL-122. I find it strange, even ironic, that someone has added support in their driver for other firms' cards, but I'm not complaining.

As I got the Netgear for free, it is a nice little backup/portable wireless unit. I originally bought the DWL-122 last fall for $30 at BestBuy, but returned it after so many freezes and problems. I am confident that it would now work fine with the actual D-Link unit. It also drives the Syntax USB-400 unit equally now, though a hack to edit the product and vendor ID's in the Info.plist is necessary for this to work.

Though all of these devices are rated at just 11mbps, they typically can be bought for less than $10 now. Their small pen-drive size makes them very nice to take along for quick wireless connectivity on the go.

Hope this helps some poor soul out there that still has the 1.3.2 driver.
Dave P. "

The FAQ's networking section has other info/notes/links on Airport 3.x compatible 3rd party 802.11g PCI and PCcard adapters as well as drivers for other chipset adapters, notes on wireless bridges and other options. Belkin's USB 802.11b adapters also have drivers for OS 9 and OS X. (See the FAQ item on options for wireless networking for macs w/o an airport card slot.)

OWC Clearance page updated (CPU upgrades, G3 Systems)
(from site sponsor OWC)

" New Clearance page items
We just added a slug of G4 Processor Cards, OWC Mercury Extreme models open box or discontinued speed. Great deals on some great speed boosters. Other goodies added too, but a lot of OWC Mercury Extremes. Online now - while they last on clearance:
800MHz w/2MB L3 from $195 up to 1.4GHz for under $399. Supply limited of course. We also put up a lot of Apple OEM G4 processors too. Apple Single G4 processor boards g4/733MHz from $59 up to 933MHz for $199. Apple OEM Dual G4 from $99, up to Dual 800MHz for $379. Even some G4/400Mhz Apple OEM for $15 still....
So, a lot of new G4 processor deals just put up on the clearance page... + still some others left from the prior posting, although not many. :)

PowerMac G3 Deals
A not so bad selection of PowerMac G3s are now available from OWC starting from $79. Less than 40 units total, so they'll probably go pretty fast at the current pricing.
Also - we've still got a few PowerMac 7300/200MHz systems left at $45. These machines are worth more in parts than the $45 selling price! First come - first served. As a config line sells out, will automatically deleted from our site.

First feedback on M-Audio Transit USB 1.5.9 driver update
Here's the first Transit owner report I've gotten so far on the recent 1.5.9 driver update.

"Transit USB Audio Feedback following 1.5.9 update
Dear Mike,
This is further to my e-mail sent on 6/8/2004 concerning the M-Audio Transit USB Audio. All problems concerning DVD playback, "locking up" the CPU after some time and excess CPU loading after some time have been rectified. I tested it out on my PB 800 DVI (1gb ram) under OSX 10.3.5. M-Audio has done a fine job. A more timely update of course would have been appreciated though.

My wish list: redirecting bass to the subwoofer channel and allowing one to adjust output from each channel seperately.
Kind regards,
Salman S."

I hope all the other owners that had problems in the past (see Transit feedback page) find the 1.5.9 driver update earlier this week helps.
If any other Transit owners try this driver update, let me know if it helps. (Include your OS version, system details and Transit driver version used in reports. Thanks.)

CDRW/CD/DVD/Hard Drive/Cardreader Compatibility Database Update Listing
The Drive Compatibility Database had 5 new reports added this morning. (Entries from Thursday, entries today are added the next newsday morning.) The database includes reports on Combo DVD-CDRW, CDROMs, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD+R, CDRW, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, Firewire, SCSI, USB, adapters). Current total 13,599 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first - does not include updates to previous reports)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
