Problem playing DVD movies after iTunes 7/QT 7.1.3 update
(Updated again other reports/tips)
"
I updated to iTunes 7 and QuickTime 7.1.3 yesterday, and now I can't play
DVDs on my 2003 Dual 2 GHz G5. I have both an internal Pioneer DVR-110
(listed as "Apple Shipped/Supported") and an external Firewire Matsushita
DVD-Ram SW-9573S (listed "Vendor Supported" after a Patchburn profile was
installed). The Pioneer is "Region Free" (used the region free 1.4.1
firmware to "crossgrade" from a DVR-110D) and the Matsushita is set to
Region 1.
After trying numerous times with various Region 1 and Region 2 discs -- and
also a region free disc -- I always get a "Supported Media Not Available"
text across the top of DVD Player's black window. When opening the Video-TS
folder directly, I get a "There was a problem opening the media. The media
type is not supported." error message. Twice DVD Player itself crashed, and
once and only once I got an error message that said something like "Could
not verify copy protection system".
Haven't played any DVDs since last week, but they all worked fine then, and
the only changes to my system since were the iTunes and QuickTime updates.
Any ideas?
Best, Byron E.
"
I've only updated a 10.3.9 system here (main work PB G4) and it still plays DVDs fine. I asked if the DVDs were comml discs (not burned) and if he'd tried the usual voodoo (Repair Permissions, reinstalling, etc. - see below for his reply). If anyone else has seen this or has a suggestion, let me know.
Update - a MacBook Pro owner said he saw the same thing and another reboot helped:
"
I had the same problem yesterday on a macbook pro following install of
itunes 7/quicktime 7.1.3. A restart of the machine seemed to fix the
problem and as yet it has not reoccurred. I have yet to try it on any
other machines.
-Paul
"
I wrote Byron to ask if he'd rebooted the machine again. (The QT 7.1.3 update requires a reboot after the initial update). He hasn't replied back if he my initial suggestions (Repair permissions, reinstall the update, etc.)
A 2nd reply to this post said repairing permissions helped:
"
Hi Mike, I've had this problem several times, exactly as he described it, on both my Quad G5 and my previous Dual 2Ghz G5. Although it makes absolutely no sense, repairing permissions has always fixed this problem (sometimes accompanied with a restart). Hopefully it will be as simple for him.
-Paul"
That was one of the suggestions I originally sent him - also mentioned in the original post here on the update downloads. May not help but worth a try (before and after updates). This reader said repeatedly repairing permissions helped.
"
I have a G5 2.3 DP and a Macbook with 10.4.7. Both are stock machines
expect for more RAM. I'm not a techie/geek.
Both have been updated yesterday to the latest iTunes and QT.
I did the reboot and permissions thing. I'm using the DVD, "No
Direction Home Bob Dylan" which is commercial. It has two disks. Here is the strange thing. Disk One
will not play, get the "Not supported" message. BUT the second disk plays fine on both machines!
I did notice something on the disks but not being a techie I don't know if it means anything.
Notice the different symbols on the two disks. (image attachement sent) Again side one is the
disk that doesn't play.
(He later wrote)
Update:
I rebooted and ran permissions twice more and now the DVDs work!
I did notice on the second permission run there were all kinds of
repairs for iTunes on both of my machines. Hope this solves it.
cheers, William
"
"
I also encountered this problem on a Duel 2 GHz G5 with iTunes 7.
However I found a way to resolve it without a restart. I went into
iTunes and selected the eject button on the bottom of the window.
This ejected the unplayable DVD and when it was reinserted the Apple
DVD player could play it again.
-Jon
"
Bryon (the first reader to report this) later replied:
"
Thanks for the quick two replies. I've since done as you advised:
1) Repaired permissions (the only repair done was "Permissions corrected on
./Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Frameworks/InternetUtilities.bundle/Conte
nts/MacOS/InternetUtilities").
2) Booted off a 10.3.9 partition on another drive -- DVDs play fine from
that so it seems it's not a hardware issue (F.Y.I. I'm running 10.4.7 on my
primary boot partition).
3) Reinstalled QuickTime 7.1.3 from a stand-alone download (previously
installed via Software Update).
4) Restarted numerous times.
5) Repaired permissions again (nothing repaired this time).
F.Y.I. The DVDs I tried playing were are all commercial discs ("Monsters,
Inc." for Region 2 as I live in Denmark, "Northern Exposure Season 3" for
Region 1, and the DVD disc from Dylan's "Modern Times" which is marked as
region "0"). All played fine in 10.3.9 (and indeed, in 10.4.7 before the
QuickTime and iTunes updates).
Guess the only thing left to do is restore from a two-week-old 10.4.7 backup
and hope updating QuickTime and iTunes again doesn't do any damage again.
That will have to wait til this weekend, though.
(I mentioned the later reports above to Byron (repeated RP attempts, etc.) and suggested he try booting from an OS X tiger CD and RP (and check/repair disk) from that. (And maybe try setting up a new user acct and login as the new user in case some prefs corruption, but this sounds more like a system not user files issue.)-Mike)
1) Repairing permissions multiple times (no extra permissions were
repaired).
2) Re-installed iTunes 7.0 also from download, just in case it was the
culprit.
3) Removed Xounds, the only haxie I have installed (but it was set to exlude
DVD player anyway).
4) Removed third-party QuickTime plug-ins -- the only ones I have are Divx
6.2.2 and Flip4Mac 2.1.0.33, both of which still work when installed.
5) Got my two-week old 10.4.7 backup from a neighbor (off site storage!) and
booted from that -- DVDs play fine.
6) Trashed DVD Player preferences for the second time.
7) Replaced current DVD Player app with one from backup (both version 4.6.5)
just in case the app itself got hosed in the update.
6) Dug out the G5's original DVD drive (a Pioneer 107D) which hasn't been
"tampered" with, and stuck it in a FireWire case -- still get the "Supported
media not available" message.
7) Created a clean "test" user account.
Don't want to repair permissions from a Tiger install disc just in case
things have changed over 7 updates, (That shouldn't be a concern as far as I know, as RP is supposed to just check/repair permissions based on your installed packages from apple. Personally I'd try it as a last ditch before a complete reinstall.-Mike), so I guess that just leaves the re-install from backup. I'll let you know if it works both before and after
updating QuickTime and iTunes again.
Thanks again for your and your readers' suggestions, though -- they helped
focus the steps.
Best, Byron"
Not sure what else to suggest other than a clean reinstall but nobody else mentioned using 2 different region DVDs or having a Region-free drive.
(But would the new QT update have any changes to limit that?)

BootCamp/XP install problems with Mac Pro w/ATI X1900 XT (w/23in Cinema Display)
(Note: Apple has now released BootCamp 1.1.1 beta, although I don't see how it will affect this problem.)
Updated - see below for reply from other Mac Pro/X1900 owners, one with a 23in Display also noting the same problem.
"My Mac Pro with ATI X1900 XT just arrived today. It's hooked up to a
new 23" ACD (which I previously reported on). After getting things
mostly setup I decided to try installing Windows XP SP2. Using Boot
Camp Assistant 1.1 Beta I created a 32 GB partition on my only drive
and restarted with my XP install disc.
The Mac restarted and obviously selected the CD to boot from as I
heard it spin up in the drive. From the initial gray screen, the
display went blank (like it does when there's no video signal) and
stayed like that. I gave it at least 5 minutes but nothing happened
and I wasn't able to start installing Windows. I tried a few more
times after unplugging all unnecessary peripherals and trying the
other DVI port on the X1900, but each time I was met with a blank
screen and had no option but to force a shutdown and boot back into
OS X.
I have no idea what's causing this issue. Is the X1900 XT
incompatible? Is Windows trying to use a resolution that the 23"
can't handle? I wish I knew. I don't have any other video cards or
displays to try.
-Eli
"
After the 2nd report (below) of the same problem with the 23in Cinema display, maybe the Windows install CD/boot (before the Windows GUI/drivers load) is using a mode the 23in doesn't support. If any other Mac Pro/X1900 XT owners have seen anything like this (or not), let me know. Include info on the Display you're using. (I asked if he'd tried
the slipstreaming drivers tip used to fix the onboard SATA DMA issue mentioned previously and checked apple's FAQ/Troubleshooting kbase docs - they're also listed on the BootCamp page here.) Some also suggested trying the other DVI port but Eli already mentioned he had tried that and he said he had no other display to use.
Update2: Another Mac Pro/X1900 XT/23in Cinema owner wrote mentioning a similar problem (20in Cinema was ok)
"
Hi from France, I just get my macpro with ati X1900XT and an apple 23" cinema display I have the same problem...
If i plug my 20" cinema display to the right dvi port (the front of
the computer facing me) - no video, if i plug to the left one it works.
I have installed windows with the 20"...if i change the connector to
plug the 23" i get a multicolor bar to the right of the screen.
I plug back the 20" and everything is ok.
After installing everything (apple drivers) i could handle the 23"
cinema display.
returning to osx all the afternoon, i wanted to install a pc game to
play tonight. starting up .... and black screen again. Just plug the 20"
again and i've got the video !!!!!
I will try to install the ati catalyst drivers to see if it fixes that. I will keep you informed of the result.
It's a big mess for users who don't have a second screen to install
the program. I hope it will be corrected very soon, because i changed my very good
G5 with 20" to play windows games.....actually i'm playing with my nerves
(I asked if he tried both DVI ports on the 23in display)
yep, i just tried something - using two cinema displays (20" and 23")
i have installed xp and apple drivers with the 20". after that i have
installed ati radeon catalyst driver. Plug the two screens, activate extended desktop, then switch the
two connections, unplug the 20", setting up at the good resolution the 23"!
restart to osx, restart to xp->black screen again.... after
around 1 minute the windows desktop appears directly: it works!
Partially but it works.....
1) the 23" is not recognize during boot time, but only after the
system loads the catalyst driver. WHY ????? what is different between
20" and 23". (Native resolution is different, but not sure about
support for lower res modes, etc. which are used during boot/loading.-Mike)
2) you need two screens to install xp (if you own a 23in Cinema) - a shame
APPLE BOOTCAMP TEAM SHOULD FIX THIS MESS VERY QUICKLY.
(Not sure what they can do to address this if it's due to the
mode that windows uses during boot and initial installs-Mike)
best regards, Oliver
"
An earlier reply from another Mac Pro/X1900 XT owner noted no problems with his 30in Cinema Display:
"
Hi, I have a MacPro 3.0Ghz, X1900XT, 3GB of RAM, three 500GB Hds,
wireless and BT. Yesterday I wanted to try to install Windows. I
created the drivers CD and the install was easy and quite fast. No
problem w/h the video at all. Of course I was aware of the SATA
drivers problem (Onboard SATA running in very slow PIO mode, vs DMA
- fixed by slipstreaming a CD with different drivers-Mike), and I had no will to loose my time for creating
new Win install CD. I cheked the PIO setting of the HD and so I will
wait for a set up (update) from Apple. Anyway I had absolutly no problems for
my GPU card.
(Just for the record I asked what display he was using.-Mike)
I have an Apple 30" Cinema.
Mario C.

"
I used a 22in (1600x1024 native res) DVI Cinema display years ago with Windows and even at the boot/command line screens it showed text, but never had a 23in model to try.

Apple Compressor 2.3 and QMaster 2.3 Updates
(I think these were released back on the 12th)
"
Apple has released an update to Compressor bringing it to version 2.3.
It can be found at Apple's Final Cut Studio downloads page or through
Software Update. Apple's page lists the update as follows:
"New in Compressor 2.3 Update
Compressor 2.3 addresses performance issues and improves stability"
The Software Update description also mentions that the upgrade is
recommended for all 2.1 version users (can't remember the exact text
though).
While not explicitly mentioned, I found that Compressor now has the
option for iPod video to have the size at 640 (VGA). While I'm not
100% positive it wasn't there before, I'm pretty certain it is new
since the iTunes store now uses that size for video downloads.
(Someone can correct me if I'm wrong about that since I have only used Compressor for DVD video.)
-Phil L.
"
There's a QMaster 2.3 update listed at the downloads page also with the same change info ("Apple Qmaster 2.3 addresses performance issues and improves
stability").
