| Apple Security Update 2006-005 for OS X 10.3.9, 10.4.7 |
| Apple released another security update for OS X 10.4.7 and 10.3.9 today. (Thanks to Matthew for the heads-up).
"
Security Update 2006-005 is recommended for all users and improves the security of AirPort.
"
You should see these in Software Update but here's the download pages also:
FYI - the page on the "Universal" Security update has a note:
"
Note: Customers with Intel systems running 10.4.7 Build 8J2135 or 8J2135a should download AirPort Update 2006-001 to receive these security fixes.
"
These have now been added to Apple's Security Updates page which links them to a page with more specifics About the security content of AirPort Update 2006-001 and Security Update 2006-005. Near the bottom of that page is a listing that includes affected versions of OS X Server also:
.... Security Update 2006-005 will install on the following systems:
Mac OS X v10.3.9
Mac OS X Server v10.3.9
Mac OS X v10.4.7 Builds 8J135, 8K1079, 8K1106, 8K1123, or 8K1124
Mac OS X Server v10.4.7 Builds 8J135 or 8K1079
For Mac OS X 10.3.9 and Mac OS X Server 10.3.9 systems, if Software Update
does not display Security Update 2006-005, the following updates need to be
installed:
AirPort 4.2
AirPort Extreme Driver Update 2005-001
BTW: Every time there's an Airport related update, users of 3rd party Wireless cards (especially natively supported ones) wonder if it will affect compatibility. If you're using a non-Apple Wireless card/adapter let me know if this update caused any problems or not. (If this is only updating Apple's Airport drivers, then it shouldn't affect adapters that require non-apple wireless drivers, but regardless if you see any problems let me know the details.) Thanks!

| G5 Tower Disassembly/Dust Cleaning (to lower temperatures) |
"Hi Mike, I got sick of seeing Hardware Monitor displaying my G5's "Memory Controller Heatsink" at 181°F (72°C). Seeing that this G5 has been under my desk near Japanese tatami mats (very dusty) and fairly close to our oily kitchen for nearly 2 years it had collected a lot of dust that I couldn't get at eg: under the CPUs and heaps in the PSU bay.
I decided to strip it down as far as allowing the PSU to be removed
and cleaned.
It wasn't nearly as terrifying as I had imagined it to be, only one
special tool was required and even that will be fairly easy to buy or even modify an existing tool.
Since removing mountains of dust clumps (especially from the PSU
fans), all of HardWare Monitor's temperature outputs are dramatically
lower, a reduction of 14°C for the Memory Controller Heatsink" which now sits at 58°C at rest and a high of 62~64°C under load. Similarly reduced readings for all other important areas within the case.
Anyone who has poked around computer cases, installed a new DVD drive
etc. can - with reasonable care and attention to detail - perform
this operation within 2 hours. I finished and rebooted the G5 90 minutes after starting.
I made a "How to Partially Disassemble a (non-liquid cooled) Late'04 DP 2Ghz G5 Safely" page. Here it is
http://www.hatsuon.net/macstuff/G5_TAKE_APART/Disassemble_G5_DP_2Ghz.html
-Michael, JAPAN."
Michael later wrote the post here resulted in enough traffic to risk exceeding his monthy bandwidth limits - he later wrote he's also mirrored it at http://www.sharpeningbeneath.com/g5guide/.
While on the subject, Friday's news has More on Internal Dust Cleaning Lowering Temperatures/Fan Speeds (Xserve G5).

| Mac X1900 XT Quiet Cooler for under $25 |
John sent a note and photo of how he quieted his Mac Pro's ATI X1900 XT card with an under $25 Arctic Cooling Accelero X2 (Fluid Dynamic Bearing) cooler. (Page updated again with another Mac Pro X1900/X2 cooler user's comments.) The X2 cooler doesn't exhaust air outside the case like the stock setup which concerned one reader with a Mac Pro (after reading some PC user's comments on that) so I asked the Mac Pro/X2 users if they had seen any rise in temperatures, increased system fan speeds, etc. - the page was updated to include replies on that with Temperature Monitor readings.
