Some 10.5.5 users noting iTunes 8.0 glitch (updated w/tip that helped)
(He later wrote a Combo update reinstall fixed the problem)
From a reader mail with link to some others reporting this in Apple's forums. I'm not seeing this problem here (AL iMac w/10.5.5 combo update, iTunes 8.0) - a playlist of songs play one after the other OK.

    "Tunes 8.0 and 10.5.5 glitch
(Apple forum thread iTunes will only play one song at a time) (He later posted there the Combo update reinstall solved it)
I found the above thread after I realized I had the problem. iTunes only plays one song at a time after the 10.5.5 update (worked fine prior to update of OS). Toggling the Shuffle button does fix it. Here is my complete experience:
    1. Only one song plays. Then it shuts off.
    2. I toggle shuffle off then immediately on, only one song plays.
    3. I toggle Shuffle off, advance or play one song, put shuffle back on, problem fixed.
    4. Restart of iTunes makes problem re-appear.

(Just for the record I asked if he used software update/delta or the Combo updater, if any addons for itunes, etc.-Mike)
Did the SU update. No add-ons for iTunes, lib on boot volume.
    Later, SCB"

I wrote suggesting he try reapplying the 10.5.5 update using the (huge) Combo Updater. (I always use the Combo updater and I do not have this problem.) Although it may not help with every problem, it's worth a try (over the years it has helped with some uncommon problems and is a common troubleshooting tip.) If that doesn't help other things to try/check are recreating prefs, recreate lib file or reinstall iTunes.
Update: he later wrote a 2nd reinstall of the Combo updater solved it:

"Tried the itunes 8 Reinstall. No good. Then, reinstalled the 10.5.5 combo a second time. Bingo!!. Problem solved.

Since I rarely restart my Mac (just sleep/wake it) before every update I do a restart (after downloading the Combo updater) and then apply the update after the restart (to minimize cached files, etc.). And then I do another restart after the first boot from the update (just out of habit). I used to occasionally do a force prebinding (from terminal) but haven't done that on the last 2 updates.

1TB Samsung SpinPoint F1 SATA I/II Hard Drive 32MB Cache with 3yr Samsung Warranty now from $127.99.

Note: Although Mac Pro, G5 tower, etc. owners were OK, several White intel-based iMac owners reported problems with F1's and that model's onboard SATA w/OS X, although not with Linux or Windows. (If anyone finds 10.5.5 changed that let me know.) Oliver noted good results earlier this year with a 1TB F1 in his Mac Pro.

OS X 10.5.5 (Mac Pro/8800GT) user notes Fallout 2/Diablo II issues fixed
The Apple doc on 10.5.5 changes/fixes/improvements has a note about "Includes extensive graphics enhancements" - a reader sent a note that it seems to have fixed the problems seen in earlier versions with some older (256-color mode) games:

"The 10.5.5 update fixed a graphical corruption problem on my Mac Pro 2.66Ghz w/ Nvidia 8800GT Upgrade for Fallout 2. The game is now playable, whereas before the display was all pushed to the left 1/2 of the screen and white and green. Now it works perfectly. I havent tried, but I am thinking they may have fixed the problems with Diablo II as well. I dont have the game anymore to test it, but if someone has it and can try it I would be interested in the results.

    (he later wrote)
I wrote you a bit earlier saying Fallout 2 works under 10.5.5. Well, I remembered I had a copy of Diablo II on my Time Machine backup. I few clicks later, Diablo II is working under 10.5.5! So great to see that Apple listened to people complaining about lack of 256 color support and obviously implemented a workaround. Nice!

Added his comments to the previous page here on Graphics/driver issues with earlier 10.5.x versions. While on the subject, last Friday's news had links to StarCraft 1.15.3 and StarCraft: Brood War 1.15.3 that notes "Game now works correctly on versions of Mac OS X which do not support 256-color mode."
    Another Nvidia 8800GT owner wrote:

"10.5.5's nVidia drivers seem to fully support OpenGL 2.1 now, at least that's what OpenGL Extensions Viewer 3.10 (freeware) reports.
    10.5.4 obviously didn't. I've got a 1st gen MacPro 2.66 Quad with an 8800 GT.
    Best wishes, Sebastian."

If you find 10.5.5 fixes (or breaks) anything, let me know the details (including mac model/graphics, app/game/addon version used, etc.)

OS X 10.5.5 notes fix for 'unexpected power on' issue
Among the many items on Apple's 10.5.5 change list is a note "Addresses an issue in which some Macs could unexpectedly power on at the same time each day" so hopefully readers that reported this earlier will find it's been fixed. If you're a reader that's seen this before let me know if 10.5.5 solves it.

I've still seen an odd console message referring to eyetvhelper/power event schedule table entries. Here's a clip from the console after updating to 10.5.5 last night. (I have no scheduled recording events in EyeTV 3.0.3 (latest to date) nor in Energy Saver's schedule panel):

[0x0-0x14014].com.elgato.eyetvhelper[199] ***Wakein::CancelEvents: requested event type: wakepoweron
      [0x0-0x14014].com.elgato.eyetvhelper[199] ***Wakein::CancelEvents: requested app name: com.elgato.eyetv
      [0x0-0x14014].com.elgato.eyetvhelper[199] ***Wakein: 1 entries in power event schedule table [0x0-0x14014].com.elgato.eyetvhelper[199] *** date: 03/31/32 06:00:00 (???)
      [0x0-0x14014].com.elgato.eyetvhelper[199] *** appName: com.elgato.workaround
      [0x0-0x14014].com.elgato.eyetvhelper[199] *** eventType: wakepoweron

I wrote an ElGato contact about this to get his comments. (I deleted EyeTV helper from my login items, re-ran eyetv (which reinstalls it - an old TS tip. Although I've not tried resetting SMC/Nvram yet.)
One other oddity I noticed after the update (but may not be related to 10.5.5) - I use an in-house amplified "rabbit ear" antenna with EyeTV 250 plus for over-the-air DTV viewing/recording and noticed that the prefs/signal strength/quality meter no longer updates properly (usually moving the antenna would show wild swings in strength, etc. - almost realtime) - that's no longer the case. It's as if there's a huge (very long) delay in the strength/quality meter reaction. (Again not sure it's 10.5.5 related, but I didn't see this when last moving the antenna a couple weeks ago - the only other updates I've done since were QT 7.5.5 and iTunes 8.)

OS X 10.5.5 Time Machine improvements
Just a FYI for Time Machine (and iPhone) users. The bottom of the 10.5.5 changes page notes several improvements (and now including iPhone backups):

    • Improves Time Machine reliability with Time Capsule.
    • Addresses performance issues that may affect initial and in-progress backups.
    • Fixes an issue in which an incorrect alert message could appear stating that a backup volume does not have enough free space.
    • Time Machine can now back up iPhone backups that are on your Mac, as well as other items in (~/Library/Application Support).
