Mac Pro/OS X 10.6.1 user feedback on VirtualBox 3.0.6 (freeware)
(Updated with more details.) First reader feedback on VirtualBox v3.0.6. (released Sept. 9th).

"Mac Pro Early 2009 (4,1), 2.66 GHz, Quad Core with 4GB RAM
Using VirtualBox 3.0.4 and now 3.0.6
All device volumes on secondary drive
App running from primary/boot drive

Successfully booting and running:
Windows XP Pro
Fedora
Ubuntu
Xubuntu
DSL

Have been unable to add "VB Guest Additions" to Fedora device, all others OK. Able to run full screen or windowed. Boot times are fast and performance is stable.
For all setups I have granted 1024 MB of RAM and 128 MB of VRAM.
Have had 3 VirtualBox's running simultaneously with minimal impact on MacPro performance.

(What OS X version is the Mac Pro using? (10.5.x or 10.6.1)-Mike)
OS X 10.6.1 currently, initial set up was under 10.5.8.

(I asked if he had seen any problems using his internet connection in VM/Windows (which some VB 2.x users had reported earlier).)
I have noticed no internet problems so far - browsing is quick, automatically downloading and installing MS updates as scheduled.
My first version was 3.0.4, upgraded to 3.0.6 with SL - I was experiencing the password/authentication prompts reported by others.
(I was curious if VB had 64bit kernel support.-Mike)
Have not tried it yet - but if I do I will update. I have found that 64 bit breaks my current version of Cisco VPN - so for now staying on 32 bit.
-Lawrence B."

I've added this to the previous page of Mac owner reports on VirtualBox.

Mac Pro owner notes on Lacie 2-port eSATA PCIe card/Snow Leopard problems
I'm guessing this card may be Sil3132 chip based (and won't repeat previous notes/apple doc on those drivers being incompatible)
"LaCie 2-port eSATA PCIe card: kernel panics with Snow Leopard
I had been using this card (LaCie SKU130804) without incident in my Mac Pro (8-core 2.8GHz) since Mar 2009 with 10.5.x.
When I installed Snow Leopard, I got a kernel panic on each boot attempt.
(I asked if the card was Sil3132 chip based and if the 10.6 install removed the drivers (to an "incompatible software" folder at the root of the HD). (Although Apple's doc lists Sil3132 driver v1.5.16.0, the 10.6 installer also removes v1.1.9 drivers.) But I've also had a couple Sil3124 based PCIe card owners report 10.6 problems. (One didn't but 2 later users did - these cards are sold under many different 'brand' names'.)-Mike)
Removed the LaCie card and no more kernel panics; LaCie's most recent driver is from July 2008 so I opened a troubleshooting ticket to find out timing on SL-compatible drivers.
I'll let you know if/when I hear back from them.
(he later wrote)
Chip on the card is labeled Sil 3132CNU.
I've installed SL twice now. The first time, I didn't get a message about removing the card drivers (but I also never got the machine to boot). I did that install straight onto my existing boot drive (2 Velociraptors striped RAID 0).
I then broke the RAID and checked out both disks (which were fine), erased the disks and remade the RAID using the Disk Utility on the SL DVD, and did the SL install but still got kernel panics on boot.
The next day I pulled the LaCie card and it booted fine. I did get a message that SL removed the card drivers, but I don't remember if that popped up during the install process or when it booted successfully after pulling the LaCie card. (The note on removed drivers is only shown after the final reboot/startup after the install and the root of the HD has an "incompatible software" folder with any removed drivers, etc. (and a rtf file repeat of the info.)-Mike)
Haven't heard back from Lacie (as of early Tuesday AM).
Cheers, Alan "

I doubt they're actually doing the drivers (and there's been a question for some time now if SI will update their reference drivers for SL compatibility) - although like some other readers I reinstalled sonnet's "1.1.9v2b" (but still seems to have SI's Dec 2006 sil3132 kext) drivers and didn't see any KP's in some simple tests (32bit/default kernel) in a 2009 Mac Pro (dual 2.66/12GB ram) with a $19.99 Dynex 2 port 3132 based PCIe card connected to an eSATA HD dock. (Although I don't recommend that as any sort of high-end solution and there may be issues I didn't see with simple tests using an HD dock. I just had the card on hand and wanted to see if the first comments here from Aug. 28th on that subject were true.)
And another owner of this card replied:

" I can confirm this is another Sil3132 based card. I raised a support case on their website and got the same answer back as for other Sil3132 based cards, that is it 'seems' to work in 32-bit mode with 2GB or less of RAM, but is otherwise known to have the same problems.
Currently Lacie have no date for fixed drivers, like everyone else they are waiting for Silicon Image to resolve this.
-John L."

I suspect they're at the mercy of SI as far as driver updates.

Follow-up from June 2009 17in MBP user on JMB360 Expresscard/Lacie D2 Quadra eSATA Problems
From a reader with new (june 2009) 17in MacBook Pro that had written last week about problems he'd seen using a $19.99 JMB360 eSATA expresscard with his Lacie D2 Quadra 1TB external drive's eSATA port. (I suspected the D2 might be the culprit based on summer 2008 report from a (pre-2009) Mac Pro owner that also noted problems using it with the onboard spare SATA ports.)

"Went out to a cheap PC parts house and purchased a Vantec NexStar eSATA + USB 2.0 HDD dock along with a Western Digital 1.5TB bare drive (WD15EADS with 32MB cache at 5400 rpm). Got home and plugged everything in to the (June 2009 17in) MacBook Pro via the ($19.99) JMB360 eSATA ExpressCard port and booted her up.
Drive was recognized by the Finder as unformatted and prompted to initialize the drive. Partitioned it and mounted on the desktop no problem. Copied a 2.5GB file onto and off of the drive in the Finder without any hangs whatsoever. This copy off the LaCie D2 Quadra (eSATA port) always failed. Seems you are correct (about the D2 Quadra eSATA port problem, which others had reported a year ago). I will keep it for FW800 use.
The dock and drive combination all up cost me $100 less than the LaCie D2 Quadra 1TB and has an extra 500GB. It's the last name brand external drive I'll ever buy. The WD is very quiet and the white Vantec case with its blue LED's goes with the Mac decor. I'll copy all of my 500GB of video over to the WD from the d2 and benefit from the speed. I'll also do some tests on the mechanism to see how close it gets to the 2.5Gbps max of the MBP port.
Cheers for now...
-Tony"
