  • Improves Xsan reliability
  • Improves reliability when transferring large files over Ethernet
  • Improves performance when authenticating to an Open Directory server
  • Addresses an issue that prevented a smart card from unlocking preference panes in System Preferences
  • Contains the improvements included in MacBook Air (Mid 2013) Software Update 1.0

Additional Information:
For detailed information about the security content of this update, see Apple security updates."

Our Apple doc listings has specific article on security content of OS X 10.8.5.
You can check Apple's OS X Mountain Lion forum and the Desktop forums or notebook forums of your specific mac model for early feedback. As always, have a current backup and don't forget to check for updates to any 3rd party addons/plugins/etc you may have installed. (Also old troubleshooting tips like disconnecting/reconnecting devices, reinstalling the OS update from a Download/Combo updater (link above), Recovery boot (for volume repairs, restore from TM backup or reinstalls), boot in Safe Mode or test with a different acct login as a check for problems with addons/prefs in the original acct. For things like fans running at high speed, odd power/battery problems or shutdowns try resetting the SMC.)
A current backup before updating of course is a must but also having a known good/bootable clone of the boot volume is well worth the cost IMO. (BTW: You don't need 3rd party software to make bootable clones. OS X Disk Utility's 'Restore' tab can do it.)
