Subject: 7500 and Bus Speed News Date: 10/12/98 2:01 PM Received: 10/12/98 5:10 PM From: Eugene Kuo, To: xlr8yourmac.com Hi, I'm a regular reader of xlr8yourmac and appreciate all the news and tips you publish. I have some news to relay to you regarding bus speed on the PCI Macs and the G3 Upgrades. Last week I installed a Bottom Line Railgun 275/1MB (2:1) in my 7500 with a VAL-4 board. My system is as follows. No motherboard cache 96MB RAM (uninterleaved) Sys 8.1 1GB Quantum Fireball 4.3GB Seagate Barracuda (SCSI-2N) External 750MB APS Quantum Iomega Zip SCSI Since uninterleaving the RAM (interleaving caused some strange type 1 and 2 and 3 errors), the card has been rock solid. Furthermore, according to Newer's Cache-22, Newer's (can't remember the name right now) CPU/Bus speed measuring utility, Sonnet's Metronome, and Apple's System Profiler (I think...can't recall if it measures bus speed, but I'm pretty sure), and anything else I could find to measure bus speed, my 7500 is running at 50 MHZ!!! I couldn't believe it! (actually 50.1Mhz) I've had the card running as fast as 325Mhz but dialed it back to 300 for longevity's sake. According to MacBench 5.0 (only the downloaded part) my 7500 is neck and neck with a new G3/300. (no libmoto) The dial setting instructions for my card say PowerJolt rev.2 on them and give settings for as high as 55Mhz bus speed. I haven't and probably won't try them. I don't know if this is a new development or not, but I thought that I would just share this (since the feedback page for G3 CPU upgrades is still down). A previous attempt with a Sonnets 266/1MB did not work. -Eugene C. Kuo
