Subject: OS 8.5 Feedback Date: 10/21/98 1:26 PM Received: 10/21/98 1:45 PM From: Brian Keith Light To: xlr8yourmac.com Mike, I haven't seen any reports anywhere with people running REMUS 1.4 Lt having problems so I thought maybe we need to get the word out. It may only pertain to NUBUS mac's but I'm afraid to try this on my production PCI class macs. I have two nearly identical 601 machines. Both are equiped with Atto Silicon Express IV fast wide SCSI 2 cards. I have a 7100/66 with the startup drive on the SE 4 that the installworked flawlessly and I can boot from the Fast Wide drive 2.2 gig Atlas 2. The Apple driver actually updated the FWB HDT 2.5.2 driver that was on the drive. It runs well and all software I have tried works flawlessly. I also have a 8100/110 that starts up from the internal apple bus. This machine has 2 Quantum Atlas 2 Fast Wide drives as a RAID using REMUS 1.4 lite. I can't get this to boot as of yet without removing the SE 4 from the computer. This is the case no matter if I am booting from the 8.5 CD or the Internal SCSI Startup drive. Both SE4's use the most current ATTO software and the only difference is the RAID. I can unplug the SCSI connection to the drive and the machine boots fine so the SE4 is still being sold and seems to work fine alone. I also tried to use Conley Softraid 2.0 but it doesn't work on NUBUS machines. My two drives got corrupted after I unmount them in REMUS and tried to do a normal format under OS 8.1 they could not be seen by anything but REMUS software and that couldn't use the drives in any way what so ever either. I couldn't format them at all on the NUBUS mac but moving them to the s900 I was able to low level format with HD Toolkit 2.5.2 and they are both fine now. The Softraid 2.0 works fine in my S900 where I have a RAID setup with 4 Quantum Atlas 2 drives on both the SuperMac E100 SCSI card and an ATTO PCI with ADS card. Of course you can't set drives up in softraid 2.0 under 8.5. By the way the Softraid has a new homepage at http://www.softraid.com/ and they are promising an upgrade by 11/15/98! I will keep you informed on any resolution I get around this as I continue playing around with the 8100/110. I plan to try the Apple RAID software to see if this works as this supports NUBUS mac's.
