"Applied Battery update... No issues when battery depletes. Ran down my MBP 2.4GHz SantaRosa 15" Glossy last night. Went to sleep like its supposed to, connected power and it woke up with no glitch. MBP information:
Production year: 2007 (Chipmunk shows it as 1997?)
Production week: 34 (August)
Production number: 356 (within this week)
It's a newer build, wonder of earlier SR builds are the ones having issues.
William R."
He's referring to Mike K's (Oct. 8th) post below (which has a link to an Apple forum thread from others on the issue Mike saw - where instead of going to sleep when the battery runs down the system shut off).

"I haven't had any problems with the battery update so far either. The only thing that I did notice is that the mAh rating in the System
Profiler seems rather random. I've had full charges read anything from 4700mAh to 5350mAh. As far as I remember, a fresh battery is initially rated 5500mAh. Then again, it might have varied before the update already, I didn't really check often.
However, I have neither sleep, nor waking from sleep issues.
All the best, Bensch

"Also applied the battery update to my new 2.2GHz 15 inch MacBook Pro.
Have completely recycled the battery with no problems.

"After I applied "Battery Update 1.3" my MBP 2.2GHz Santa Rosa is fixed for the battery health status... from 60% health (5 months of usage) to 99% back to when i first bought it...
So the update (Battery Update 1.3) is recommended.

"Read this: http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/
(FYI - that's a doc on the previous "MacBook/MacBook Pro Battery Update 1.2" and links to the v1.2 update (although the date at the bottom of the page is Oct. 3, 2007 - the date of Battery Update 1.3 release) with notes on issues with some batteries and criteria for getting a suspect battery replaced (if the update does not help and certain criteria is met). Battery Update 1.2 was listed in the April 27th, 2007 news page, which also linked to 2 Apple support docs updated that day - Determining Battery Cycle Count and MacBook, MacBook Pro: Battery not recognized or "X" icon appears on menu bar-Mike)I don't remember Battery update 1.2, but 1.3 has killed my battery.
It won't top off. My MBP just dies at about 50% charge, and the discharge time is always "calculating".
This update and 1.2 appears to be designed to flag defective batteries.
(He later wrote)
My battery fits the 1.2 doc description for "defective". I will try to get a new one since my warranty ran out 1 week ago! (That doc above mentioned 'affected' batteries would be replaced regardless of MBP warranty status-Mike)
My Battery was good BEFORE 1.3 just had relatively short life. Now Xbattery report full health, but the MBP shuts off after about 1 hour with only 54 cycles on it... -Dan S.

"My MPB C2D (2.16 Ghz) is back up to 100% health after the update. Currently have 107 cycles on the battery. My battery health was fluctuating from 91-95% before the firmware update. No issues with the laptop not going to sleep properly when the battery runs down.

"Just wanted to update you on my issue after the battery update 1.3. I did the PMU reset, but the problem still happens about 1/2 the
time. When the battery runs down, sometimes the machine just shuts off, other times it just goes to sleep like it should. No idea
why it would not be consistent.

(Got another battery to try? (will apple replace that battery?)
his original report from Oct. 8th follows)
Battery Update not so good... I have a Santa Rosa MacBook Pro, and the battery update has a bad side effect. When the battery runs down to a point where the computer would normally go to sleep, it immediately shuts off instead. Joy. The log says shutdown cause was "-60" which I've not seen before. Another Apple update that fixes one person's problem while creating a new one for somebody else...
(Note - Although not everyone saw this there's an Apple forums thread titled MacBook Pro just shuts off after Battery Update 1.3 that has some posts from others that saw this.-Mike)
(I asked if the MBP's battery had been updated (see notes in About Battery Update 1.3) and if he'd tried some of the usual voodoo.)
Yes, it updated it, and I just did the PMU reset so we'll see what happens next time I drop to 0%. It obviously takes 4 hours of battery use to get there, and I don't have time today.
It's honestly not a huge deal, I just have to make sure I save work more often when I am below 8%.It's just frustrating that this is added to the "won't sleep on it's own" issue that so many other owners are seeing, not just me.
-Mike K."
Another Santa Rosa MBP owner wrote he hasn't seen that problem with the update:
(added 10/8/2007) "
Applied battery Update 1.3 update, Santa Rosa MBP 2.4GHz, ran it down and it
went to sleep as expected. No problem here.

Battery Update 1.3 "fixes" my motherboard
In the beginning of 2007 I had started having problems with my MacBook Pro (first gen) not operating on a fully charged battery. First the battery would indicate 20% of a charge left, then 50%, etc till the battery indicated 99% charge left yet still die.I contacted apple via phone and the the Genius at the store, both told me it was a "internal wiring issue" and the motherboard would need to be replaced. Since it was out of warranty I would have to buy it out of pocket and it would be near a $1000. That was in May. I decided to not shell out $1000 and just live with a power cord always hooked up to my MacBook Pro. I installed Battery update 1.3 yesterday and I can now operate off battery power again. So much for my bad motherboard.
