Reader Report on Overclocking the PowerTower Pro 200
Published: 12/26/98

" Hi, I wanted to overclock my PowerTowerPro 200 and so I of coarse promptly searched your site for the info. I only found one PowerCC overclocking page that had a few ratios tested and so I whipped out the soldering iron and tried 5X. It would only run for a min before it would crash so I wanted to try 225. There were only a few speeds on that page so I puttered around hoping that I would hit 4.5X [there is no 4.5X ratio on the 604 CPU series-Mike]. I only have 2 out of the four resistors on the board so I was only able try out combos with 1 or 2 on them.
I have only been able to find that one site with this kind of info so I thought that it might be good to share what I found with others.

(Assuming a 50mhx bus)
1.6X (80mhz CPU) :R1, R2
2.0X (100mhz CPU) :R2, R4
2.5X (125mhz CPU) :R4
2.6X (132mhz CPU) :R1, R4
3.0X (150mhz CPU) :R2, R3
3.6X (180mhz CPU) :R1
4.0X (200mhz CPU) :R1, R3
5.0X (250mhz CPU) :R3 [failed]
? chime, but promptly freezes :R3, R4
? no chime(may be a bad soldering job by me) :R2

Some of these conflict with the settings and ratios on that one web page [that was for the PowerCenter Pro card I think-Mike]. My card is different in that it is 200 instead of the 180 and 250 on the page but I thought they would still have similar settings. The age of the card could have to do with it...My card is a first generation and the 250 didn't come for a while after. As soon as I get another resistor I can test combos of three but I thought that it would be good to share this info with those who might need it.
Also if anybody has information on PowerCC 604e ratios I would really like to try 4.5X but I don't know what the combo is.
Great site, keep up the good work.

Note there is no 4.5X Ratio on the 604E CPU. I think I menitoned that in some of the past 604E CPU card reviews as several times I has wished for just such a ratio myself. Overclocking is not something I can recommend to others, and note that fixed speed cards like these require soldering that is beyond the capability of most owners. In the end the resulting boost may not be worth the effort as most 200MHz 604E CPUs don't seem to run reliably at more than a 10% or so boost. The Links page OC section lists links to pages with this information - but use it at your own risk.
