This page has reader comments on DVD2one for OS X first mentioned in Tuesday's (April 22nd) news page. Here's the original news item/first reader report from April:

DVD2one for OS X: Two readers sent a note that http://www.dvd2one.com/ now has a MacOS X version of their DVD copier/compressor. I've never heard of the company or product before but according to their webpage "With this tool you can make movie-only and full disk copies for personal use on a single DVD-Recordable." However according to their how to use page the software cannot decrypt DVDs (I think all commercial DVD movies are encrypted):

"Most DVD's are encrypted and need to be decrypted before you can process them with DVD2one. Since decrypting DVD's can be against the law in your country, this part is not included in DVD2one. You will have to search the internet to find a program that can do this job. "

I'm not really sure how useful this software would be without decryption capability (see below for info on that), but they have a trial version download (limited to 30min and 14 day trial period). One of the readers that wrote about the product replied to my mail asking for more info:

"Well, If you have DVDs you've probably noticed that they get damaged very quickly. Have you ever tried to make a backup copy? On a Mac? On ONE DVD-R? The only way to do this on a Mac takes about 9 hours.... With a Dual 1.25 FW 800 PowerMac.... Until DVD2oneX. Now it takes about 25 minutes. I travel quite a bit and make backups of ALL my DVDs. My life just got much simpler....
Tom
(I again asked what was used to decrypt the DVD movies since DVD2one says it doesn't have that capability. I also asked about image quality when a dual layer DVD movie is recompressed to a single-sided disc. (Probably varies depending on how much compression is needed to fit the movie on a single-sided disc.)-Mike)
You can use DVDBackup1.3 (I've been using this) or 0SEx. (Links: DVD backup, OSEx) I've been using the Windows version of DVD2one with RealPC for a while. I can't tell any difference in the quality. Checkout this dvdrhelp forum thread. "

" Hey Mike, Making a backup DVD is very simple with this program but it does take a little longer than what has been said (at least on my 867 Quicksilver with faster HD's)
These stats were from making a backup of 'Tears of the Sun'
#1) DVD Backup (taking image and cleaning it of copy protection): 32 min
#2) DVD2OneX (compressing it to 4.4 GB): 47 min
#3) Toast (burning the dvd on 2x): 29 min

So basically all in all, less than 2 hours will give you a complete copy. Possibly it would be a little faster with a faster Mac. Also, it's good to note that one must not play around on the computer while burning the DVD as toast will give you a buffer error.
Thanks for keeping up such an awesome site!
-Barrett S.
(I asked Barret if he was using v1.1.0 released June 18th)

Yes I've used both versions. Haven't really noticed much difference between the two. "

Success #2
Single side, double layer 6.15GB disc. Extracted the movie and AC-3 audio to a 3.47GB file using DVD2One. Removed excess languages, and the bloated files not needed to get the movie itself. Toast burned fine, and is playing now.
(whoo hoo!!)

The decryption is easily and rapidly done with a program called DVDBackup (ver 1.3 I think is current). (That's what a reader noted yesterday in the first news item on this utility. Also see the above note on OSEx, both freeware w/download links.-Mike)

Real simple-- drop the factory DVD icon into the window, select the 3 encriptions (to remove), and save the decodedc file to HD. You get an exact copy of the original without encryption.

I don't think the compression is too much-- I do this by another (very lengthy) multistep process now. By stripping off all the crap (languages, angles, menus, etc.) I generally get a 4+ Gb Video_TS file from most 7.5 GB DVDs. It was also interesting that I ran the demo on Blackhawk Down, a DVD that I have been unable to copy (other than remove encryption from the full length) by any other means. It appears to work with the demo.

I just tried the demo of DVD2oneX; 30 minutes of extraction gave me a 850+Mb file (1 1/2 hr movie = 2.5 - 3GB?) It played perfectly on DVD Player on my DP800 QuickSilver.
I also ran the demo on a previously uncopiable (sic) Eagles DVD-- it worked perfectly. 30 mins. yielded a 1.37GB file; the approx 1 1/2 hr show should be 4.11Gb. I compared the original to the DVD2oneX copy in max size mode on a Apple 17" flat panel-- undescernable in quality-- it was brilliant! BTW, 30 min took ~6min to run-- great ratio.
I did not have all the bells and whistles, but did have FF and chapters. I am going to order it.

Mike, Well known among hacks:
DVD Backup 1.3 is best decryptor. OSEx is second best. (see links above from yesterday's posting. I guess many didn't see that info.-Mike)
After creating VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders with DVD Backup, use Toast to save enclosing folder as DVD image. Mounting by toast is just like loading a DVD (DVD Player starts playing), except that the files are no longer encrypted. Then DVD2one can make a backup of this toast volume.
Hope that helps. - Paul "

I have read an article about DVD2One (and Pinnacles InstantCopy, both in the Win32 version) in the german magazine c't.

The main benefit of DVD2One is that it does not fully re-encode the movie. It does encode the graphic blocks but not the movement vectors. It just takes the original vectors from the source which saves a lot of time.

DVD2One does only copy the movie on the target DVD (which, of course, can only be single layer) without menus and other extras. Normally a movie alone should fit on a DVD-R without any loss in picture & sound quality.
Looks like it is time now for me to buy a DVD recorder...
Ciao, Heiko. "

Hi Mike,
IT WORKS!!!!! I ripped a DVD last night on my PowerBook, of all things. FAST! Used DVD Backup to copy the disc, and DVD2One works like a charm!!!
This is HUGE! :>) I'm trying a double layer disc tonight.

Ok so I actually bought the program:-) Good news and bad news.
Using the demo first I used dvdbackup to copy the video ts folder from a dvd, ok worked fine. Then I used dvd2one and made a video ts folder from it, 30mins since it was just the demo, took about 5mins on my dual 1ghz mdd to compress. Then opened up toast and chose dvd from the other menu. Name your dvd what you want but make sure its in all capital letters, drag the video ts folder over to toast. Push burn, 20mins later I had a 30min clip of my dvd video. Played in my home dvd player and ps2 and mac Very happy

So I buy the software though I tossed the 7 gig video ts folder from my dvd on my drive and trashed it. Ok no prob; I'll just use dvdbackup to copy the video ts folder from my dvd again. Uh only thing, this time It is getting a read error wont copy but only a few times from my dvd Bah!!!!! Any ideas? hmm maybe I'll try rebuilding premissions...

Ok fixed it, you must watch some of the dvd in apple dvd player before dvdbackup works
