Report on iTunes - iPod Syncing Problems
Posted: 9/30/2005
Updated 10/26/2005 for reader tip (USB 2.0 powered hub)
Updated 12/30/2005 for note problem solved w/pwr'd hub
Updated 7/25/2006 for note pwr'd Hub solved problem w/USB 2.0 PCI card

From a reader mail (too long for the front page). I've not had any problems like this with an iPod and iTunes 5.0.1 (or 6.0.1) using my PB G4 (running 10.3.9) but posting as a FYI/request for suggestions. (Update - Chris later wrote the tip on using a powered USB Hub solved the problem.)

" ...To sum up my problem - I have not been able to transfer music successfully to either my wife's iPod Shuffle or my brand new iPod Nano for over a month. (below he notes running 10.4.2 on a PB G4-Mike) The copying music progress bar simply stops on a seemingly random song during a transfer, this also causes the Finder to lock up and any action associated with the iPod to not respond (i.e Stopping the transfer or Eject) The only option left is to un-plug the iPod and on doing so everything springs back into life with an iTunes error that says the iPod could not be read from or written to.
Upon examining the System.log in Console you see this:

19:30:11 is when the transfer freezes and 19:31:56 is when I unplug. As this happens with both Shuffle and Nano I am assuming the problem is with my Mac so I ran some tests using the Nano:

  1. Restore Nano to Factory settings - same problem persists.
  2. Restore & Format iPod with Disk Utility Zeroing all data - Format completes in good time but same problem persists in iTunes.
  3. Restore & Format then copy 1.7GB of Video to Nano in Finder - Video file copies in good time but same problem persists in iTunes. Playing back the video from the iPod also works without problems.
  4. Reinstall iTunes - same problem.
  5. All of the above with all other USB devices removed - same problem.

I think this conclusively proves that there is nothing wrong with my Mac's USB2 ports, the culprit must be iTunes. I'm not able to say exactly when this started happening as my wife updates her Shuffle very infrequently, I *think* it happened the last time she tried to update her Shuffle in iTunes 4 before I installed iTunes 5 :-/
For the record I'm running a Power G4 1.5GHz with 1GB of RAM and stock everything, software wise it's running 10.4.2 completely up-to-date with the Disk verified and permissions repaired every week.
I'm pretty much at a rather depressing dead end so it's time to turn to the faithful readers of xlr8yourmac... HELP!
All the best, Chris R. "

Chris later wrote that iTunes 6 did not solve his problem. (I had 2 other readers with this same problem but can't replicate it here - but see below for notes that a powered USB hub solved the problem.)
The recent iPod Updater 2005-09-23 included a note on "Bug fixes for iPod shuffle" but Chris noted he's also seeing problems with the Nano. (I also asked Chris if he'd seen the system freezing/unresponsive in other use like web browsing, etc. as some reported after the recent updates for 10.4.2. (Lookupd flooded/crashing, causing system to be unresponsive - see notes/tips in Thursday's news.)

Reader Tips:

(added 10/26/2005)
" I e-mailed previously commenting that I had the same problem Chris describes (see above-Mike) when sync'ing a Video iPod with a 15" Powerbook G4.
On a hunch, I purchased a $20 powered USB 2.0 hub and connected the iPod through that. Now it sync's perfectly.
My hunch came when I noticed that the iPod didn't charge when connected to USB on the computer (I normally charge with the USB power adapter).
I have had two other iPods prior to this and never had trouble but I always ran those on Firewire (which supports up to 60W I believe in relation to USB's 5W max).

Update - Chris later replied that the tip above solved his problem:

" Hi Mike, Hope you've had a nice Christmas break! Just thought I'd give you an update on my Nano + Powerbook (Sync/Copy) problem... (see his original problem report above)
well I picked up a Belkin 4 port USB2 Hi-Speed Hub today and bingo, the Nano works perfectly through the hub, how bizarre!
(I asked to confirm it was a powered hub)
Yep it's a powered Belkin 4 Port USB Hi-Speed Hub - I had seen the note on the site about a hub fixing the problem but didn't get round to buying one until yesterday.
I have a Logitech MX 700 mouse, Sound Sticks and Nano all running off the hub with no problems, money well spent!
Have a great 2006! All the best
-Chris R "

Another report a powered USB Hub solved the problem, but this time from a (MDD) G4 tower user with USB 2.0 PCI card:

(added 7/25/2006)
"I just wanted to confirm one of the many troubleshooting tips listed on your site. Thanks to Chris for the hint on the iPod transfer problems!

I have a 5 port PCI USB 2 card in my PowerMac G4 and encountered the same problem when updating my 5Gen iPod. Adding a (powered) HUB did indeed solve it! I wonder why, but I suppose this is one of those problems you must not try to understand for your own sanity...

Once, I had an USB 2 card that didn't work correctly, in both PC and Mac. It didn't recognize devices most of the time or only half (showing the ID in System Profiler but nothing more). An USB hub solved the problems with that card too...
This new card works fine with other devices, except iPod as an exception. Unlike the report, the iPod on this card DID charge though.

The system.log did spit out a lot of these:
Jul 23 03:51:28 PowerMac-G4-MDD-L kernel[0]: USBF: 940.482 AppleUSBEHCI [0x2c93800]::Found a transaction past the completion deadline on bus 84, timing out!

Googling on the error "Found a transaction past the completion deadline on bus" immediately brought me to XLR8YourMac.
You have an awesome site there!
Cheers, Leendert K.
