Last week (early July, 1998) I received the shock of my life, a like-new PowerBook G3/250 that was donated
by Brad Lau and Randy Mita of Hawaii and a growing number of readers who have
helped them. Only after they told me it was coming did they post the MacGurus secret page in the forums. If I had known what they were doing I would have stopped it but they ordered it (with their own funds) before telling me anything. I don't think anything like this has ever been done before. As I wrote on the main news page the day I was told about it, I'm not embarrassed to say it brought tears to my eyes. Something like this could only have come from a community that is more like family than a collection of computer users - I'm speaking of Macintosh owners of course. A great human-interest story that exemplifies the true Mac spirit. This PowerBook is my favorite Mac and will be treasured forever. It will be a great help in answering all the daily mail, as I can now do that anywhere I go. I will take this Powerbook with me everywhere as a tool to promote the Mac. I will think of you all every time I use it. As I told Randy, it could have been a used 1400 with a broken screen and it would still be priceless to me. Kay will be drawing names when I receive the final list of contributors to give away the following items as a small token of my appreciation:
As noted above, recently PowerLogix has pledged a PowerForce G3/300 ZIF upgrade and Farallon 10/100 Network card, and MacGurus is adding a IXMicro Mac Rocket and JackHammer SE PCI SCSI card - all will be added to the raffle. Awesome! Check out the MacGurus XLR8 Raffle page for more details. To Brad, Randy, MacGurus and all of you that are helping them, you have my deepest thanks. Words can't describe how I feel. The other platforms can only dream of having a community of owners as special as you. Brad and Randy say all costs were covered by donations. The raffle will be held as soon as all products are ready (the Powerlogix ZIF card may be a week or so before it is available). As of 8/1/98, here is the final list (alphabetical order) from Brad:
Arthur AdamsThanks to all of you who helped Brad and Randy do this incredible act. This PB is my most prized possession and is used so much I can't imagine doing without it for even a day. God bless you all. | |
