Effects of G3 Backside Cache on Unreal Performance
-how much difference does a 1MB vs 512k card make? -

Published: 10/5/98

The two following graphics show the benefit of a faster and bigger cache on Unreal speed rendering. The tests were done using the HQ and LQ settings (unreal ini files) found in the Xlr8yourmac Unreal Toolkit 1.04 [download the 3dfx mode ini and rave mode ini files]. The presence of the 1 MB faster cache results in a 12% speed increase over the slower 512k cache with the LQ setting . With the HQ setting, the difference is a bit less significant at 7%. You may notice also that the two systems were using a different 3DFX accelerator card. One was using the Techworks power3D (4MB) while the other the Canopus Pure3D LX with 6MB. It is possible that the extra 2 MB of VRAM on the Pure3D equipped G3 might have influenced the results. If you have a G3 running at a similar speed with a 1MB cache G3 CPU Card, send me the results and I will update the graphic. - Frank [thanks to MK for his benchmarks]

[Note - it would be better to have the 512K cache running at the same cache speed as the 1MB model, but most popular 512k cache cards don't allow speeds that fast.-Mike]

3D CARDS HEAD TO HEAD

The following tests are quite interesting since they were performed on the same machine with two different 3D cards: the ATI RagePro 6MB and the Canopus Pure3D LX 6MB.

The machine characteristics are as follows:

Power Macintosh G3/333
PPC750 @ 333Mhz
1MB Cache @ 222Mhz
100MB allocated to Unreal, full install
VM off
Mac OS 8.5f7

As a the person who sent the benchmarks noted, "Comparing the Voodoo 1 and Rage Pro numbers on the same machine makes one thing clear. If you want to get the most out of this game, don'twaste your time with a Rage Pro card. There's lots of Voodoo 1 cards available for less than $100 that will provide twice the framerate and better looking graphics. - MK" [MK, please tell us which ATI drivers were used- Frank]

This reader also commented about the IX 3D Ultimate Rez card: "ix3d Ultimate Rez RAVE: don't bother. There's so many rendering errors and the performance is so abysmal that it makes the software render engine look like a Voodoo II card. If people are dying to try it, you must set 'NonATI' to true [in the INI file] but there's really no way to get acceptable looking images. It's most likely driver issues rather than hardware issues. Complain to ixMicro."

I am now especially looking for benchmarks on G3 equipped Macpicasso cards or Matrox Millennium cards.
