Reader Report on EZQuest Firewire CDRW Failure
(Bracket Shorted to Ckt Board?):

Published: 1/8/2001
Last Updated: 2/23/2001
Although I don't remember any reports like this from EZQuest owners in the Drive Compatibility Database in the past, a reader sent an email reporting an almost immediate failure of his CDRW drive, along with a photo showing a metal bracket across trace paths on the Firewire/IDE bridge board.
" Hello Mac User, take a look of this photo and let me know you opinion.

Enclosed my mail send to EZQuest.
Thanks,
best regards, Wladi

Dear Sirs, i was very happy after my first burned CD ! But.... after the first one no more ....Fire Wire buss...no more CD on Toast... no more nothing.
So let me look inside this fantastic enclosure... and oh.... nice system to fix a printed board to a metallic part ( aluminium)!!!!!

Printed board direct on metal...Fine and nice for shorts!!!!
Please take a look to this photo...taken after one CD !!
Let me know if this is a nice job for 300$ !!
and let me know how can i receive a new one!!

He attached several photos showing contact areas. A sample is below. I'm awaiting a reply if he checked for any insulator sheet between the bracket and the circuit board. I also asked for the drive model and if he had any idea when it was built (in case this is an issue with a recent model/bridge card/design change). He later wrote:

" Hello Mike,
No pads on the bottom !
Yes it was bought last week !
here the specifics: BOA CDR/W 12x10x32 FireWire ext. PM
Part# K43662 Ser# 2127000110
Inside the CD is a Teac CD-W512E
Regards, Wladi"

Wladi later sent an email with comments from EZquest on the problem:

" Hello Mike, the first answer is positive! Now i wait for the replacement. When received i let you know
Best Regards, Wladi

Enclosed answer from EZQuest:

Hi,
It looks like your drive is missing the spacers between the arm and the bridge or the arm is longer than usual. Removing the case of the drive normally voids the warranty, but we will take the drive back and give you a new one. Just send me your name, address, phone number, and serial number of the drive and we will take care of it.

Amazingly - on February 23rd Wladi wrote later that the replacement drive has the same problems:

" Hello Mike, news about my CDR-W. After a long e-mail answer and response i have received the RMA number and shipped back to EZQuest the burned device. A few week later received back and after some days without CD burning, i try to burn a CD. All O.K.

Today another CD to burn and whats nes on Toast ? No CDR found!!
It is a joke...My first question was another burned bridge ? No it is not possible! One bridge without spacers..O.K. ...but two...no possible!
So...a screw driver....and i have opened the case and inside: Wonder!!!
A new bridge mounted in the same art as before: on the printed board!!!!!
Crazy....crazy and crazy....
At this point i have no more words.
Regards, Wladi Turkewitsch "
