(Jan 8th, 1999) This is the 2nd report I've had that contrary to the listed requirements, a ATI video card is not required to run the Connectix's Playstation emulator (Virtual Game Station). Here's the latest report:
"Hi Mike,
I first ran the installer (ATI universal installer 3.3) (selected easy
install) but it wouldn't work. It said that no ATI card was detected and
simply ask me to quit. Then I thought I'd give a shot again at it by
performing a CUSTOM INSTALL of the ATI VR drivers. It worked and it
installed properly. Then I upgraded the drivers (ATI driver update found on
the CD). Worked again flawlessly.
Like a little greedy kid unwrapping his toys I restarted the Mac, crossed my
fingers and double - clicked on the Game Station application. The first
time , I had a message saying I did not have an ATI card and asked me to
quit. I then tried again and yes! it worked!!!!! I had a message saying that
the software works best with G3 233 APPLE G3 with fast bus. There was 2
choices : never show this message again or OK. I clicked OK, popped a
Playstation CD in (Final Fantasy VII) and yes! it worked again, flawlessly,
as smooth as the original Playstation !! I then tried several games and they
almost all worked beautifully with the exception of Resident Evil I and II
(the game did not want to start, had a black screen). I tried Final Fantasy
VII, NHL Faceoff 98, Pennant Major League Baseball, NBA shootout 98, Crash
Bandicoot and Marvel Super Heroes. They all worked well, smoothly with the
exception maybe of NBA shootout which was a bit slower than the original
Playstation.
I had a Voodoo I (which support RAVE) in the Mac during these tests. (I
think that the Game Station is not using the Rave 3d drivers though as
someone was told by some Connectix spokesperson at the show). The Mac had a
Powerlogix G3 card (model 220/110) running at 330 Mhz, 512k cache on the G#
card (no onboard cache) at 132 Mhz. I started the game at 800x600 in
thousands of colors but the Gamestation automatically switch the resolution
to 640x480 I think. The ATI extension that did load up at startup was the
one called "ATI extension 2.5.1. The other one called "ATI acceleration" had
an X on it at startup.
So let's say it loud : the Gamestation works with the G3 upgraded Macs and
WITHOUT the ATI cards. ;-)
Happy Gaming! I have never been that excited about the Mac future!
regards,
