Mac Rainbow Six Column: 1st Issue

I approached Mike after his request for a Rainbow 6 column, since I love the game and have been playing it for a year with friends on the PC side. Since I have been in the military myself, Rainbow 6 had me hooked from the first minute I saw it, and I'm sure most of you will agree, it is incredibly addictive! So, where to start??

Well, since the demo and retail version have been out for a few weeks, I will assume for the sake of this column that you are all familiar with the premise of the game and its system requirements. The purpose of this column is not to troubleshoot hardware problems, but to cover tactics and strategies to complete the missions and above all, to have more fun. I'm sure the numerous articles on this site will cover any hardware issues. That said, my system is a 300Mhz B/W G3 overclocked to 450Mhz. It has 192Megs of ram and the old Rage 128 for OpenGL pixel-pushing. I have a 17" Viewsonic Monitor. Note: It is advisable to set the in-game resolution to 640x480. I got a black screen with 1024, as mentioned in the manual.

Weapons Tip:
Before booting R6,the first thing I did was alter the weapons files for the game. You may choose not to do this, but I did for the following reasons:

  • The default weapon selection is very limited, as the NATO Mod 2.0 is not available for the Mac. This mod has a slew of weapons and sniper rifles which make the game more realistic. Note to MacSoft (Get the mod out asap!)

  • As anyone who has been in combat will tell you, 30 rounds is not enough. Combat veterans will tape clips together in reverse, sometimes two, even 3. When in a firefight having that extra clip on your rifle can and will save your life and your teams".

Inside the R6 Data folder find the data 2 folder. In that, find the Kit Folder. Primary weapons can be found in the Kit Folder. Using SimpleText find and open the text files with the "pw" or primary weapon prefix. Here you can adjust the number of rounds per magazine, and the "Reticle time constant multiplier" A value of 0.5 for the reticle will make that puppy snap instantly. I did not adjust anything else since these are the most important values. Zoom multiplier can also be adjusted, but I like the zoom on the CAR-15 and MP-5SD my two primary assault weapons. TIP-don't use the M-16, you will die.

Don't forget to save the file and over-write the original. You can choose to back-up the originals, but I didn't since the game worked flawlessly with the first modifications.

First Mission Tips:
Lets start with the first mission on the Recruit Level, since this is where most people will get their feet wet after doing the training levels. Operation Steel Wind is the Belgian Embassy operation in London. Terrorists have taken the ambassador hostage and R6"s mission is to free him.

Choose a four man team. You should be able to complete all the recruit-level missions with a four man team. If not, you need more practice. With weapons fine-tuned and team chosen its time to choose kit. It is best to choose the medium kit selections since the terrorists (AI) will hear you moving more easily in the heavy assault gear.

Choose Street Medium Assault Outfit
Primary weapon : MP5-SD
Secondary weapon: Silenced 9mm (more punch than .45 silenced)
Frag Grenades
Flashbangs

Make sure to click the "Assign to all" button to assign your weapons and kit selections to all your team members. Note: On later levels a Heartbeat Sensor is standard issue, but on the recruit level, all tangos are visible on the map as red dots. Hostages are white dots. Friendlies are blue/green dots.

Once you initialize, run with your team to the right side-door. The trick to entering the embassy is to do it when the minimum of tangos are patrolling immediately inside. Crouch, pick the lock and drop the sentry/sentries.

Use of your map to spot patrolling bandits will get you through this. After clearing the bottom floor, make your way up the inner staircase and across toward the sentry with the ambassador(use your map), get between the hostage and the bandit, kill him and escort the hostage back down the way you came. You need not kill all other tangos to achieve success, but it can be more fun.

In later levels however, you will find that if a tango hears you he will run to the hostage and "double -tap" him. Learn to get to the mission objective and get out fast. You can always go back later and be Rambo in a Practice mission.

Next Issue:
In the next issue we discuss preferred keyboard layout and weapon selection as well as a walk-thru of Mission 2:Cold Thunder.
