Mac Rainbow Six Column: 2nd Issue
by Simon Purll
Posted: 1/3/2000Keyboard Layouts: As mentioned in the first issue, the keyboard is crucial in R6. There are basically two ways to go. A leftside layout and a rightside layout. I like the rightside setup, but both left and right are shown below: RIGHTSIDE | LEFTSIDE

Num 1-4 - Prim, Sec Wep, Slot1,2 | 1-4 - Prim, Sec Wep, Slot 1,2

Control - Run | Control - Run
Shift - Shuffle | S - Shuffle
Map Zoom Out - Left Bracket | Map Zoom Out - Left Bracket
Map Zoom in - Right Bracket | Map Zoom in - Right Bracket
Go Codes Alpha-Delta - A,B,C,D | Go Codes Alpha-Delta - 1-4Note: The ideal setup for running is to use the second button on a two-button mouse. I have a Kensington USB 2-Button mouse, but cannot get it programmed correctly. (Any tips here would be appreciated). Remapping your keys to your own personal liking is the easiest way to get comfortable in R6. Don't settle for a keyboard layout you don't like. I dumped the iMac keyboard and got an iKey USB keyboard from Macally. It is like the older Apple Design Keyboard which I love. It is much easier to use with R6 than the iMac keyboard.
TIP: If you get 'capped', use F1 to skip to the next operative in your team.
Mission 2: Cold Thunder:
Hutu Rebels have taken Dr. Winston hostage in the Congo, and she has to be extracted alive. Use a 4-man team. Select Camo Medium Gear.Weapons as follows:
MP-5SD5, 9mm 92FS-SD, Flashbangs, HB Sensor.Strategy: After initializing in the clearing, proceed to the end of the pathway until you have the front stairs in sight. Separate your scan into left, center and right areas.
Drop the guards at the stairs down the center. Check left for more patrolling guards. Move left and scan right for a guard at the pup-tents. Take him out and move to the side of the outbuilding in front.
After clearing front yard, run to bottom of front stairs.

Using the sensor, check that front patio is clear. Proceed to the patio's back windows. Clear the back yard. Hit the guard as he is moving away. Ignore the other patrolling guard on the back patio at the far left. Sensor shows one guard downstairs inside - take him out and proceed upstairs.
Using the sensor, isolate where the hostage guard is in the room. Note other guards' position. Take other guard out with the 9mm.
(NOTE: Here it is crucial in later levels to use Camo Light Gear or else the guard will hear you and dispatch the girl.)

Now you have two choices.
Flashbang the room and use your pistol, or use the MP-5 and shuffle until you have a shoulder shot on the guard. If you shoot him don't stop firing until he has fallen. Too often, a short burst will wound him, and he will still kill the hostage.
If you flashbang, make sure your first shot is a headshot.
Escort the hostage downstairs and back to the LZ.

In later levels, there will be more tangos in the yard, first floor, and another hostage in the basement. Use this same tactic, then hold the team downstairs with the girl. You clear the basement alone. Better not to go into the stairway with the team since you need to move slowly and quietly. Then escort the 2nd hostage upstairs and join your team. Then escape with both hostages.
If you get dropped, use F1 to skip to your next operative and do it again.

A good rule to live by in Rainbow 6 is don't shoot anyone below the chest or navel.
Center chest and first-time shots to the head will stop you from being killed. The only time you should shoot someone in the foot is to kill them without exposing yourself. Another reason for headshots is to minimize the chance of shooting the hostage. If the hostage is kneeling, a headshot will miss him /her. There will be times when rounds will pass through the bandit and kill your hostage, so position yourself carefully.Any of you who have played LAN multiplayer, will know how frustrating it is to shoot someone in the arm while they shoot you in the forehead. You die cursing, they laugh.
TIP: Don't try and run while your weapon is zoomed, you will run very slowly.
Next issue we cover the engagement tactics of multiple teams and a guide to the Operation Angel Wire Mission.
