Mac Rainbow Six Column: 3rd Issue
by Simon Purll
Posted: 1/5/2000Multi-Team Assault Tactics
This issue will cover the use of multiple teams to complete the mission objective. It's important to develop sound tactics on the easy levels that will also work on the difficult ones to come. Don't sacrifice your AI team for mission success. As the campaign progresses, you will run out of operatives. This issue will center around Mission 3 or Operation AngelWire (Recruit Level).Operation Angel Wire
The Phoenix Group terrorists have seized the PetroMech rig in the North Sea. Two bombs have been planted, and R6 has to disarm them and clean out the bad guys.Weapons
MP5-SD, 9mm-SD, Heartbeat Sensor, Flashbangs. Assign them to all members of both teams.Strategy
Since this is a multi-team strategy, we will use two 4-man teams, a Blue Team and a Red Team. You are lead on the Blue Team. The hardest part of this mission is the neighborhood. The rig has eleven confusing levels that can be incredibly difficult to navigate without a plan. The eleventh level is useless, since the extraction zone is on level 10, and there are no bandits there. using the planning map, click up through the levels and recon the position of all terrorists and both bombs. You will see the following:Initialization point is down on level 1. Both teams start there.
Bomb#1 is a yellow square on level 8. Terrorists present!
Bomb#2 is a yellow square on level 9 Terrorists present!
Extraction zone is White Square on level 10.Red Team will take bomb#1. Using your pointer, add waypoints for Red Team up to level 8 and stop outside the door where the bomb is. No Go-Codes are needed until here. ROE is 'Engage' all the way. At the door assign Go-Code Alpha and special action 'Flashbang Room'. Next waypoint is at the bomb. Assign Go-Code Bravo and special action 'Disarm Bomb'. Then assign a route upstairs to level 10 and the extraction zone.

You are Blue Team lead, so all you need are waypoints for navigation to bomb#2 on level 9. Using your Heartbeat Sensor and MP5, carve a route to the bomb. Drop all bandits first-time as , on the elite level a wounded bandit can and will raise the alarm and send you vertical. Once you disarm the bomb, the victory conditions are met. On the elite level, you must tap all bandits and disarm bombs to win.
TIP: Don't forget to use the 'SAVE PLAN' button in the planning dialog to save a good strategy.
General Summary
Using multiple teams is really easy thanks to Red Storms' intuitive use of navigation and action commands. Use of another team can also be handy to create a diversion. The enemy AI in R6 is not as sophisticated as Rogue Spear (We can hope can't we?), but if you assign loud weapons to your diversionary team and send them in the back door, you can draw guards off of your objective. Not something to try with hostages however. A second team can also be used to guard an objective while your team clears the site. Use of the 'S' or Status key, keeps track of the AI team as they complete their assignment. I was impressed with the speed with which my AI team completed their task.I look forward to using similar tactics in Eagle Watch and discussing them here. The obvious best use of multiple teams is with multiple objectives. Three objectives, use three teams. They need not be four-man teams either. Fewer guys travel faster and quieter (try two-man teams for a kick.) Get all teams into place using waypoints, and then assign them one go-code that unleashes all teams together! Real SAS-type stuff. The tactical possibilities are endless, your imagination is the only limit.
Issue #4 covers two great weapons mods for Rainbow Six!
