Unreal Image Quality - Rave vs 3Dfx
-Screenshots using Voodoo 1, Voodoo 2, Banshee and RagePro -

Published: 12/05/98

The following images will show you how Unreal looks like when running on different 3D Cards. For better comparison, The HQ setting found in our FPS Toolkit 1.04 was used for comparison. How Unreal looks before and after applying the newest patch (1.02b1) is also shown. We also show what type of changes is provided by modifying the LightModify setting (check Unreal advance settings under 3dFX or Rave engine). If you do not already own a 3D card, I think the following images will make you reevalute your needs ;-).-Frank

Before sending me a screenshot with a 3DCARD not appearing on this page, CONTACT ME FIRST. The reason in simple: if everyone send me his screenshot, my mailbox will soon contain 20 MB of Gifs.:-) After you contact me, I will tell you what to do to. Thanks in advance !

Latest Unreal Patch and 3dFX dark appearance (640x480)
(Finally it's fixed!)

The latest Unreal version 1.02b1 that brings Mac users on Par with the PC users introduced a new darkness reduction setting called "LightModify". It is available in the advanced menus of Unreal . Setting it to the values shown below will produce the effects as shown on the pictures from Rainbow colors -5.0 (perfect to get a headache ! to super bright colors (+5). I showed what this adjustment can provide for your information only. In my opinion the normal default setting (0.0) is perfect (Top right) and greatly enhanced the image quality of Unreal (Top left).
I invite you also to compare the ATI RAGE 8MB at 640x480 with the Techworks Voodoo1 at the same resolution before and after the new patch. With Unreal 1.0 , ATI looked better but not anymore after applying the new 2.19 patch.

3D Cards @ (640x480)

In the following tables, Unreal 2.19 was used (Mac or PC version) for comparison. Screenshots were taken at 640x480 and 800x600 standing in front of the castle. The images were converted into Jpeg format (default setting in Graphic converter 3.4). It appears to me that the RAGE screenshots are very dark compare to all 3DFX screnshots. This is likely to be due to Unreal itself. If you have a RAGE PRO card and are able to get a much brighter appearance, let me know.
