-Benchmarks comparing the new ATI Rage 128 with Microconversions Voodoo II cards -
Published: 01/16/99The Empire strikes back ATI 128 vs Voodoo II 3DFX cards I put below a comparison on how selected machines performed with Unreal. For the comparison, I used our HQ setting found in the our Unreal FPS toolkit 1.04. [See the Toolkit page for more info on the kit] Unreal 1.02b2 was used for the test unless indicated. All the scores below were obtained in 16 bits (thousands of colors) and after running the Timedemo utility which measures the average frame rate for a complete cycle of the castle-flyby. All machines ran Unreal with a minimum of 88 MB of real RAM. Longer bar indicates better performance.
Conclusion:Voodoo II 3DFX cards are still the kings of the hill in Unreal.
The ATI 128 chipsets in the Yosemite performs very well but is still 25 % slower than Voodoo II. I did not indicate the scores obtained with the ATI 128 in millions of colors but they were identical to scores obtained in thousands of colors. Note that the Voodoo II chipset can only render in thousands of colors. If you want to see how Rave rendering is with the ATI 128 vs 3DFX, take a look at our appearance pages:
ATI 128 vs 3DFX [Not Complete-Mike] Rave vs 3DFX [Quake Fan? the Rage128 leaves the Voodoo2 behind in Quake, and runs resolutions much higher than the Voodoo2 can run as well. See the Yosemite Game Performance page for details.
