Voodoo 2 drivers comparison
Microconversions vs. the generic voodoo 2 drivers
- Performance Tests in Unreal -
Published: 11/10/98You all probably know now that Mac Voodoo 2 generic drivers that work with every PC Voodoo2 cards have been made available on the web recently. I am not endorsing the use of those drivers, so use them at your own risk. Moreover, please, do not send me an email asking for those drivers. I don't have them. The following graphics were made for information purpose only. (that was my disclaimer in case you didn't notice;-) )
So far, people have been reporting that those drivers are showing some incompatibilities with various games like Myth and Quake 1.09 (It works well with Quake 1.08 though). [For reader reports on game compatibility - see our Generic Drivers Feedback Page.] In the case of Unreal , those drivers seem to be working fine, provided that you modify manually the screen resolution of the game in the Unreal.ini file . Doing it within Unreal will crash the game. The benchmarks below were done to find out if Unreal would perform equally with the generic voodoo 2 drivers.
The tests were performed on 2 different Mac (9600/350-1MB and APPLE G3/300/.1MB) running Unreal with either the generic drivers-PC Voodoo2 (Creative Labs and Diamond) cards or the Microconversions Game Wizzard voodoo2 drivers-card combo. For better comparison, our HQ and LQ settings found in the Xlr8yourmac Unreal FPS Toolkit 1.04 were used for the test.
Performance at 640x480
Performance at 800x600 As you can see , the performance is nearly identical for both screen resolutions.
The Graph below lists the results we've received from other systems at various CPU speeds at 640x480 and 800x600 resolution. In some cases the system owners did not have a Game Wizard to use for comparison.

If you performed tests on machine not listed here, let me know and I will update the graphics.- Frank
