February 8th
I hope you had a nice weekend. I did not win the Gocart grandprix this weekend here but we had a lot
of fun!
Bungie Releases New Multiplayer Map: Now available on the bungie.net web site is the first free downloadable Myth II map offered by the company. The map, "Leagues from Nowhere", introduces
a notable innovation to conventional multiplayer-map design.
"For the first time, the Difficulty setting of a net
map changes the starting conditions of the game. Playing at the
Timid level will give players a modest number of troops and an
uncomplicated terrain, while playing on Legendary gives the player
a wide array of troops and terrain littered with throwable explosives.
With this feature, players will be able to easily change the
parameters of the map to suit their skill level.
This innovation highlights the power of the Myth II map editors
to change the fundamentals of the game. Many excellent maps are
already being produced with these tools and distributed via the
many third-party Myth sites, most of which have links at http://www.bungie.net/community.
With the release of Leagues from Nowhere, Bungie aims to shift
Myth II mapmaking into high gear."
Klingon Honor Gueard bug workaround: Jamie Dresser mentioned
that he was able to prevent KHG from freezing by decreasing the
allocated memory to 110 mb (140 to 110mb in his case). This as
he said might free up some memory for other tasks like playing
the movies in the game.
Diablo II follow-up: Mark Anderson of CNET.com sent
word about a Mac version coming this year :
"Hey Frank...
Just a bit of gossip. I spoke with Brian Love at Macworld,
and he hinted heavily that they'll do Diablo II for the Mac.
He said something along the lines of "Blizzard hasn't done
any games that haven't appeared on the Mac." However, we're
_still_ waiting for StarCraft, so D2 is still a looong ways away.
-Mark"
GlideHack Movie Fix! I mentioned last week that I was
having trouble to record movies with GlideHack. Like I said "
I had weird colors and rendering was not acceptable." Bob
V. Burkleo wrote that he found a nifty trick to make it work :
"I found that with my 12meg GameWizard I have to disable
triple buffering to get the movies to not have the weird colored
frame. Screen captures in Myth II work great!!-Bob"
Glidehack and 3DFX tweaker workaround: Tyler Perkins
suggests to use an applescript:
"I got the same problem as soon as I put GlideHack in my Extensions
folder. I found a workaround, though. I wrote two AppleScript
applications: One that moves GlideHack out of the Extensions
folder and one that moves it back in. The one that moves GlideHack
out of Extensions is in my Shutdown Items folder, so GlideHack
is out of Extensions when I boot. Then, the script that moves
GlideHack into Extensions is in Startup Items, loading after
3DFXTweaker. This is working great. The easiest way to make the
script is to open both the Extensions folder and Extensions (Disabled)
folder. Now, open the Script Editor and press Record. Move GlideHack
from one folder to the other and save the script as a run-only
application ("Never show startup screen"). Now make
another new script, press Record, and move GlideHack back. Save
the script.- Tyler Perkins- University of Virginia"
Serpentine patch and Unreal 1.02b4: Nate Tabak sent
a note that he is having problems with Serpentine after upgrading
to Unreal v1.02b4:
"I got the Beta4 patch a few days a go and have had problems
regarding Serpentine. I can summon the weapons 'n all, but i
cant get Unreal to recognise Serpentine DeathMatch. I've gone
through the INI file, but still no luck. Do you know what's up
with this...am i just ignant?? -Nate Tabak"
I am clueless at this point since everything works fine here.
If you experienced some problems, let
me know.
Heretic II cool mp3: Check out the cool MP3: "Minuet et Minutae:
Corvus vs. Morcalavin", created entirely using Heretic II sounds. It was created by Phayyde (phayyde@hexenworld.com) and it rocks!
Note that Logicware will release the Mac version later this year. For many, Heretic II was one of the best game this year on PC.
Unreal and Vorb Controller: Craig has THE solution
to your problems:
"Frank,
I got the VOrb to work pretty smoothly with Unreal, and thought
I'd send along these not-so-obvious configuration tricks for
others that have the VOrb, too.
The first it the little used "sixth degree-of-freedom"
on the orb; namely, the Rz axis. (the action that would be similar
to tilting your head form side to side.)
Vivistar set this axis to no action in their stock configuration.
I reconfigured it to next/prev weapon, and set the sensitivity
down low, so I'm not accidentally changing weapons while turning
or running. If I want to switch weapons, just a hard twist to
the left or right! This leaves the other buttons free for other
functions, which lead me to the next tip (which will be useful
for all inputsprocket users.)
Does unreal have a command that you want to have on your joystick
button, but the inputsprocket doesn't have an entry for it? All
you have to do is edit the Unreal.ini file, in the [Engine.Input]
section, and find an entry that your inputsprocket has, but you
don't use (like the CENTERVIEW command) and put the command you
want, such as "throwweapon", in the Alias=centerview
line [see the nifty cheat posted last week showing the benefit
of throwing your weapons ;-) ] . Pick that command in your popup
menu for the inputsprocket, and you're good to go.
On a final note, I like to set the label color of unreal .INI
files a different color, so when an update comes along, I can
remember which files I have to go in and make these modifications
to. Craig"
Craig also mentioned that he was able to pulled an ATI 128
card out of a Yosemite and to install it in his superMac j700/180.
[the card is slotted for 3.3V and 5V PCI slots-Mike]
He said he got about 12-15 fps in HQ-like mode on the flyby at
832-624. This score is a bit higher with what we see at this resolution
with a MacMagic 8 MB card I think. It is comparable to voodoo
II scores in other middle range machine with Unreal. Although
it is too soon to draw any final conclusion, I remember reading
about the ATI 128 needing a fast processor to show all its power.
Descent II 3DFX update: Duane sent me an update to
his latest work:
"I have been hard at work this weekend. So there is another
new version. (v1.0.9)
Descent II 3Dfx took a great leap foward. The robot are properly
lit. The Energy Centers, Robot Creators, & Reactors now function
properly. And you can use third pary levels. It's now a full
fledged beta! I have also added a control for the video refresh
rate. This will allow VooDoo2 owners to get the best frame rate
& brightness possible (fiddeling required). Also fixes some
dim displays as well. The 3Dfx tweeker overides this setting
on the VooDoo1.
Added the remaining direction controls for the input sprockets
button type. The 12 directions plus other functions makes for
a very long list. CD music volume has greater volume range &
resets the system volume on exit. I have also speed up the sprite
drawing some, so that big battles are a little smoother. - Duane
Dustin Symanski comments on 3DFX vs Rave Unreal screenshots:
"It is interesting to note that in the screeshots of
Unreal on the 3dfx use a heavily ordered dithering (little blocks
of reapeating patturns to simulate color.) The rage128 either
is not dithered at all or uses a subtle random dithering (no
repeating paturns are visible.) I think that the "smooth"
look of the 3dfx is due to this because the dithering breaks
up any sharp edges. This dithering may be intentional to improve
looks but I think it is rather an atempt to cover any 3d rendering
errors." -Dustin Symanski
Derek wrote that he is unable to see the frame rate in Myth
II when using a USB keyboard. The reason is that these keyboards
apparently have no DEL key which you normally need to press to
see the frame rates. There is no other way but to use an ADB keyboard
I think.
(No news updates for Feb 6 and 7th)
February 5th
Blizzard has open their
Diablo 2 site. Interestingly, it is mentioned that it will
support 3DFX cards. This they say will provide additional visual
enhancements with special
3Dfx features such as:
- improved transparency effects
- colored lighting
- smoother shadowing and transitions between light and dark
areas
- atmospheric effects
- faster frame rate :-)
I emailed them asking if a Mac version was in the work and
will let you know asap.
Unreal Cool cheat trick: "In co-op weapon mode, just
stand on a weapon respawn site, pick it up, and use the ; key
to throw the weapon. Since you no longer have the weapon, you
can pick it up again. Repeat as necessary until you have a big
pile of weapons you or your buddies can pick up. This works in
multi as well and is pretty much an infinite ammo cheat if you
don't get killed while doing it. ;)- Hepatitis"
GlideHack reader's feedback : [ 3DFX card utility, see
yesterday's news below]
a) incompatibilities with 3DFX tweaker 1.0:
"Thanks for the great Mac gaming coverage; I appreciate it
very much. I just discovered that GlideHack 1.0 is in the Extensions
folder, 3dfx Tweaker v1.0 will not launch... it gives an error
message stating that no Voodoo 1 card can be found. Moving the
GlideHack back out of the Extensions folder allows 3dfx Tweaker
to function correctly again. So as it stands right now, it's
speed vs. gamma correction, screen snaps, etc. Tough call. :)-
Jim Adams"
b) movie capture needs a bit of work: I tried it personally
with Unreal. I was able to record a 100 MB movie but when playing
it with movie player, I had weird colors and rendering was not
acceptable.
c) problems with 3Dfx Screen capture but gamma settings
work OK:
"I downloaded and used the Glide Hack. (After doing a full
system back up... Just in case.)I didn't experience any side effects that
I noticed... no apparent slow down using the Glide Hack lib with
Myth II either. I used your Myth II Benchmark 1.0 to test both
with and without... negligible difference. I couldn't get the
3Dfx Screen capture to work. (Which was one of the big things
I was hoping for.) However, the gamma correction works great!
No more turning up my monitor brightness every time I play Myth!
Those were the only two features I tried. Although a friend said
the "Limit Texture Ram" feature didn't work to let
Camageddon see the Game Wizard. (He has the 8mb version.)
I'm disappointed that the settings effect everything the Game
Wizard does... I can't set it to effect Myth II only. That means toggling
the GlideHack off when I want to play Unreal, and on again when
I want to play Myth II. It seems like an interesting utility...
but looks to me like most of the features are defunct. -Alex"
MacDescent 3dfx follow-up (plus news on Descent II 3dfx!) Duane Johnson wrote about the current state of Descent I 3dfx [updated noted below in past news]:
"Howdy,Just a quick note to let y'all know that I will be posting
an update to Descent 3Dfx Friday evening. Version 1.0.7 is a
bug fix version, a few little things have been fixed as well
a one big texture bug. But the real news is that I have a version
working with the Descent I DEMO data files. This means that
anyone with a VooDoo card can download the Demo from the macplay
site and give Descent 3Dfx a spin. The REALLY big news is I'll
be posting an alpha version of Descent II.
There are lots of cosmetic problems (ugly menus, old weapons,
drained energy centers..) but the overall game is running fine.
So people that own Descent II can give it a try. I'd like bug
reports, but there is no need to point out some of the obvious
problems. I will put together a readme that details whats not
working. Duane"
DM-Loki Review: Paul Hoderlain sent word that Gamespot
has an article
by Cliff Bleszinski about DM-Loki, one of the latest Unreal
map released by Epic.
"First I would like to say that you are doing an outstanding
job with your 3D gaming site. I do like the addition of other
gaming news to that about Unreal. I saw on Unreal Kingdom (dated
Tuesday, Feb.2) that on Gamespot (www.gamespot.com), there is
an article by Cliff Bleszinski about DM-Loki. It's one of the
new DM maps that Epic just recently released. It includes tips,
an overview and many screen shots. It's a nice article.
[Paul also mentionned that the RIO MP3 player I talked about
recently is not Mac compatible:]
About your mention of the Rio MP3 player. I saw it at EB and
it is only for PC's. It has a paralell port interface and they
said that they weren't planning a mac version. I did see that
one other company is coming out with a model for $149 that will
be both mac and pc compatible. I can't recall the name of the
company though. Thanks again for all your hard work. I hope to
pick up one of the Blue and White G3's soon. I can't wait.- Paul
H."
Logicware indicated
today that Jazz Jackrabbit 2 is now shipping.
New Wolf3D
Unreal Screenshots: Luke over at Wolf3D has put up some
new screenshots of Wolf3D alpha, including a screenshot from the
secret floor. Sounds interesting, be sure to check them out.
tomorrow is Saturday here in Japan and I'll be participating
in a local Go-cart competition...wish me luck ! This means the
news will maybe be posted late during the day.
February 4th
Unreal Tournament web page
opens! GT Interactive opens today a completely new web page on Unreal
and Unreal tournament
(UT) . The site is not fully operational yet but you'll find there
exclusive screenshots of UT plus a cool free
Mac Unreal Tourament screensaver! They also annouced an Unreal
Level Pak soon to be available.
Glidehack released: GlideHack is a freeware utility
that performs special effects with a 3Dfx card. It does screen
capture (both snapshots and movies) and several other useful and
useless things. Get it here:
http://www.student.nada.kth.se/~d88-bli/misc/
here are the features:
- Crash cleanup: If a game that uses the 3Dfx card dies unexpectedly,
GlideHack tries to shut things down properly so you get your
2D screen back.
- Screen capture: Ordinary screen dump methods don't work
with the 3Dfx screen, and not all games provide this functionality
on their own. GlideHack lets you capture both snapshots and
movies.
- Various tweaks: This includes things like screen gamma manipulation.
That sounds like a must have for 3dFX cards owners. I will
play with it a bit tonight and let you know. If you try it too,
send
me your impressions or comments .
Westlake
Interactive has a major update today on their web page:
Falcon 4.0 Mac is coming along well, with much of the
recent work taking place on the networking front. The game is
playing well over TCP/IP against both Macs and PCs. The next step
will be to go into full beta (sorry the beta list is full, please
don't email!) and after some heavy testing it should be ready
to go.The Mac code is now up to date with the PC shipping version,
and we're hoping to integrate any patches that come out on the
PC before the Mac version ships.Given the complexity of this sim,
we're holding off on estimated ship dates. But the project is
certainly on final approach :)
Railroad Tycoon II is progressing well, it is past the
first playable stage and looking great. The next part of the project
will be to add AppleTalk and TCP/IP networking. As we've been
working with the game over the past month, we've been very impressed
with the depth of gameplay and attention to detail the original
developer, PopTop Software, put into RT2. If you liked the original
Railroad Tycoon, or are just a fan of strategy games, you'll love
RT2. RT2 Mac is scheduled to be released around May 1999, although
as always, estimates on release dates are subject to change.
Deer Avenger :Westlake is pleased to announce it is
working on development of Deer Avenger for the Mac, in partnership
with Hypnotix (the original developer of Deer Avenger). The game
will be published as a joint venture from Simon & Schuster
Interactive and Cendant Software.Deer Avenger is a hilarious parody
of the hunting games that have been hot sellers lately, written
by Brian McCann, a staff writer on the Late Night with Conan O'Brien
Show. You get to turn the tables on the hunters, and play as a
deer that is armed and dangerous.Deer Avenger Mac is one of the
shorter projects Westlake is currently working on, so there won't
be much news, the game should be done towards the end of February.
Tomb Raider Gold (which is Tomb Raider 1 + four extra
levels, Unfinished Business) is nearly finished. The game is running
great in 3Dfx, software, and RAVE. All we're waiting on is some
cut scene and intro movies so we can convert them to high quality
QuickTime format and do final beta testing.
The minimum requirements for Tomb Raider Gold Mac are: PowerMac 80mhz or faster, 16MB of RAM, System 7.5.3 or higher, 4X CD-ROM, QuickTime 3.0 (included)
Vigil 99 first impressions:
"Frank your Unreal page is wonderful! Keep up the good work.
I visit your page almost daily. I downloaded the Vigill99 v.2.19
from Decybers single player map page they list it there were
as they list the link for the 220 version on their opening page. Here
is the direct link to the file: http://decyber.solgames.com/unreal/new1/vigil99.zip
This is very unusual, but unique level It make use of something
I've never seen used in Unreal before. At the beginning you will
see an introductory storyline script on the screen in large letters,
completely unlike the universal translator messages. The first
enemy you encounter is the SkaarjEnforcer. He is a beautiful
mettalic gold in color. He is also very deadly. I don't see how
anyone can get through this level without cheating. It is beautifully
designed but needs a fast computer to shine. I have a 200Mhz
603e with 72 megs of RAM and RamDoubler 8.0.1. When I type in
stat fps I only get about 4 fps. In otherwords it is very choppy
on my computer. I need a MacMagic Voodoo card badly. However,
my wife would probably leave if I spend almost $100 dollars on
my computer. Hah! -Marty Fender"
Golgotha: is looking for various platform developers.
Golgotha, like Parsec is an open sourced 3D game. Check it out at http://www.golgotha.org/.
There is a voodoo3 article available at 3Dconcept [Not an English page,
for more details on Voodoo3 (perf., screenshots, etc.) see the links at the
bottom of on Yesterday's SLI article-Mike]
Diablo 2 Movie: The Unholy
Battlegrounds has posted an Diablo 2 movie giving you a peek
at the gameplay from this much anticipated online game. The movie
is rather bulgy (80 megs !!!) but worth the d/l they say. I presume
a Mac Diablo 2 will be available considering the success of the
first version. (finalist for Macworld game of the year award)
February 3rd
Unreal
1.02b4 is released :
From Westlake Intreractive : "This version of Unreal contains
only Mac-specfic bug fixes from the previous Beta 3. It is still
based on the PC version 219. We are planning on updating to 221
as soon as it is available on the PC (and to us), because Epic
has advised us to wait for 221 since 220 will probably be outdated
soon."
Bugs fixed in this B4:
- Servers should work correctly
- OSTime variable works correctly
- A Rave crash bug was fixed
Interplay indicated they are reconsidering coming out with
Descent 3 on the Mac. Check out the posting in alt.games.descent
from the Interplay guy: "With the new macs coming out and
3d acceleration on them, we've been reconsidering doing a mac
version. Ultimately it depends on how many we think we can sell,
if that will make more money that the cost of development (duh!).
:) No word yet and no promises. Sending Interplay (or me) tons
of email probably won't help. What would help is if we could get
about 20,000 orders. :)-alan pavlish, Interplay ,(tantrum@interplay.com)"
Kevin Baucom wrote he found a way to get brighter graphics
in Unreal with his ATI Rage Pro card. [remember the rendering
on with the ATI cards was much too dark, see our appearance page linked under the logo above]
"There are only two ways I have been able to get brighter graphics
in Unreal with my Rage Pro. One way is by making the resolution
1024x768. It looks really good, but in some places, especially
with fog and volumetric lighting, it gets really slow. The other
way, since I have an AppleVision monitor, is to change the ambient
lighting really high. It makes the textures look kind of bad,
but at least I can see. I don't know if there is another way
to get it brighter on non-AppleVision monitors. Kevin Baucom"
Descent
3DFx 1.06 is now available . Among new features:
Adds Afterburners Remaining Display
· Saves Cockpit mode in prefs file
· Numerous bug fixes
· Adds bank left and bank right button items
Mark Levin comments on the Viewclass trick I posted yesterday:
"Jut saw your update... I agree that Viewclass is an enormously
fun command. But there's much more to be said:
-- Viewclass will work on anything Summon will (monsters,
weapons, ammo, and so on.) I'm not sure how to find these names,
but most of them are easy to guess and there are lists of them
floating around Unreal-specific sites.
-- Another useful command is Playersonly , which freezes time
except for player movement. It's good for setting things up.
-- On viewing shots: All shots dissappear within seconds, so
it takes either a bound key or split-second timing to watch.
So far I've only found FlakShell, Rocket, and Razorblade , but
I'm sure the others are out there somewhere.
-- If you bind a key to "viewclass razorblade" and
fire the RazorJack's second trigger, you can actually fly it
around! It's very hard to control though, and I've never managed
to actually use it as a guided missile, but it's fun..."
Michael Lohman of decyber Unreal wrote they got Vigil 99 but
for 2.20 patch. [ I mentioned yesterday there was a 2.19 compatible
version. If you know the link, let
me know]
"
I am proud to announce that the new Vigil 99 (for 220 patch)
is released today. Vigil 99 is created by Holger Huck. He is
the new member on the deCyber Unreal Team and after testing this
map from Holger I know we again have a big hit. This map shows
why Holger is on the deCyber Unreal Team. It's an amazing and
very well done map and if you're looking for a tough job....well....here
it is. Here's what Holger Huck says about his new Vigil 99 wonder:
'It's kind of revival of Wright Bagwell's great Vigil for Quake.
You fight new monsters with all new weapons!' Although I did not
include new models, all changes made have serious effects on
gameplay, so make sure to read HHweapons.txt carefully! The Shotgun,
Freezer, Proximity Mine Launcher, Trooper Shield, Shrinker and
the BFG 20000 are completely new. I also included MANY new textures,
mainly from crack.com's Golgotha stuff.
Download
Vigil 99 for 220 patch. (6.2 mb)" [It won't work now but will
when Mac Unrea 2.21 will be available]
Ken B. Agbayani wrote he had no problem running Unreal
with an Ultimate Rez Pro -Techworks Power3D combo:
"Hi Frank: I'm using an Ultimate Rez Pro in conjuction with my
TechWorks Power3D running in an 8600/300 (Mach 5 604e)/160MB and
I'm having zero problems whatsoever using the 3Dfx Glide rendering
option of Future Cop. Gorgeous screens as usual for 3Dfx games.
I also have had no problems using this setup for any game that
uses the Voodoo board for 3D rendering (Unreal, Myth, Myth II,
Hornet, Korea, Quake, Descent 3Dfx, Carmageddon, Tomb Raider II,
Klingon Honor Guard [well, if I select 800x600, I get an ugly
screen where I can't do anything to regain control of the machine]...any
other 3Dfx capable I missed?). Thanks for a great site! Ken"
I had a good laugh while reading Ken's signature..take a look

"...you should get a computer. I recommend the kind I
have, which is a "DOS" computer... The other major
kind of computer is the Apple, which I do not recommend, because
it is a wuss-o-rama new-age computer that you basically just
plug in and use. This means you don't get to participate in the
most entertaining aspect of computer owning, which is trying
to get the computer to work. This is where DOS really shines.
It is way beyond normal human comprehension."--Dave Berry

Florian Fischer wrote he found a cool way to have more fun
with Unreal:
"Hey! I just found something in Unreal that I want to share.
I don't know if it is news to you, but it is not described in
the console commands on planetunreal. You can try to bind the
following keys:
P=ViewClass Pawn
O=ViewClass Player Key
P cycles your view between the viewpoints of the living things
on the level. This includes the birds, the caged rabits and even
the little flies that buzz around. Unfortunately, it does not
show the head movements, such as when the Nali is bowing. Also,
it does not take control of the character. While viewing with
theeyes of some monster somewhere, your mouse and keyboard movements
still apply to your own character. Key O will return you to your
own view. I haven't tried it in multiplayer mode. Maybe it cycles
thru other player's views (hehe). ViewClass can also be used
on the console and can be more specific. Try: ViewClass NaliPriest
(in the opening sequence) ViewClass Titan (while he's busy killing
all these Krall)Or you can take the viewpoint of an object ViewClass
FlakCannon(unfortunately, it refers to the Flak Cannon respawn
point, not the actual weapon. If only I could view a deathmatch
game with the viewpoint of theFlak Cannon :-) And related to
this is the ViewPlayer command ViewPlayer <playername>It
works in Botmatch and shows you what that particular bot is doing.--Florian

Randy Geurts wrote in the newsgroup that 3DFX finally made the Mac SDK kit for developing Voodoo I/II drivers available. No drivers included but this by itself paves the way for anyone who has the know-how to develop their own Voodoo I and II drivers. [I think it's more aimed at developing games-Mike]
The SDK Kit contains the following Components of the Glide 2.x SDK
1.Glide2x SDK.sea (Glide 2 sdk)
2.Glide2x Diags.sea (Glide 2 diagnostics

She looked around for her Mother In-Law, and of course she wasn't

Nightwalker

the web page : "Currently only available in Macintosh format
(PC to follow) and rendered in fully animated VirtuaVision, NIGHTWALKER
is a dark, moody, downright tempermental (if not a little weird)
experience for the those gamers who enjoy a little more than shoot-em-ups,
car crashes, and virtual women with big hooters. Puzzles? You
bet: some enigmatic, some flat-out obscure (I suggest you keep
a copy of Hamilton's Mythology and perhaps The Golden Bough at
hand - not that they'll help, you understand, but everyone needs
a little light reading at times.).You can't die, but you can easily
get lost, so I'd suggest packing a light lunch before playing.
Perhaps something with a nice bearnaise sauce..."
