Don't forget to check out all the other site features! How to determine Unreal Framerates First of all, get the Unreal FPS toolkit
(New Toolkit Version 4/5/99: - added support for the latest Unreal beta versions and Rage128 cards. Note that the latest 220 version of unreal (see the main site sidebar game software updates for a download link) has a builtin framerate utility, so you no longer need to add timedemo.u to your Unreal system folder. The Toolkit's new readme has more info.
View the TimeDemo Readme File for instructions on use (included in this folder). Timedemo will time the castle flyby on the Unreal intro. Make sure you wait to until the 3rd flyby as mentioned in the readme to record your score. Your score should be the average fps given on the scren (AVG) obtained after the 3rd complete loop. In order to have comparative results, USE the 'Unreal.ini' files included in this folder. There are different types of Unreal.ini files included. One is called 'Unreal LQ , high speed' and the other 'Unreal HQ , slow speed'. To install, simply drag the one that corresponds to your system in the Unreal folder (this will replace your existing Unreal.ini file , so save it elsewhere before).
IMPORTANT:
- Make sure your mac video mode is set to thousands colors
- If you *do not* have a 3D accelerator card (Power3D, 3DFx Voodoo 1, Game Wizard, RagePro ATI 3D or VR card) or you don't know.
- Select the normal Unreal.ini HQ and LQ files for the tests.
- If you have a RAVE type Graphics card (ATI RagePro for instance or Apple G3 rev 2 or iMac rev B)
- Use the ATI HQ and LQ ini files.
- If you have a 3Dfx accelerator card (Power3D/Monster 3D/Game Wizard, etc.)
- use the ini files for 3DFX cardsMake sure you do not leave the console down over the screen during the test
(Hint: use the TAB key to enter the SUMMON TIMEDEMO.TIMEDEMO command)
- the test should be run in standard full screen mode, not with the console obscuring the scene. Once you have recorded your score (average fps given on the screen after a third loop of the castle fly-by), repeat the same procedure with the other file.Summary of Steps:
- backup your existing Unreal.ini file in your Unreal game folder (or rename it unreal.bak)
- Copy the appropriate HQ (high quality) INI file from the Toolkit based on your graphics card
- Launch Unreal
- Hit the TAB key and enter SUMMON TIMEDEMO.TIMEDEMO
- After 3 complete loops of the castle (intro) scene record the last "Cycle" average FPS.
- Repeat the process with the LQ ini file.
- Submit your scores (see below)
When you submit your framerates make sure you include:
- Your Mac model
- CPU speed and type (ie G3 at 300Mhz)
- L2 cache size (if known)
- Video card type (3Dfx Voodoo 1, Voodoo II, RagePro, Onboard video, etc.)
- Total RAM allocated to Unreal
- Indicate if you did the FULL install (otherwise I assume std install)
- Indicate if you are running virtual memory.
- Voodoo II owners please do 640x480 and 800x600 tests
- FPS Average after the Timedemo 3rd loop of the castle flyby
- For the Voodoo and Rage card owners, please do the same tests in software rendering if you have time. (optional)
- For the Voodoo 1 owners, if possible we'd like results at 50 mhz (default swap buffer) and 60 mhz (swap buffer 0). [advanced settings are possible with the 3dfx tweaker utility linked at http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/links.html] Note - you may need a fan on your 3dfx card to run for long at 60MHz speeds! We can't be responsible for overheating 3dfx cards or the use of 3Dfx tweaker.
A typical report would be like:
7600
604e
256k L2 cache
Voodoo 1
Thousand of colors
100 MB to Unreal
Full install
no VM
with LQ Unreal.ini : 23.52 fps (voodoo1) ; 5.00 fps (software rendering)
with HQ Unreal.ini: 13.13 fps (voodoo1) ; 3.65 fps (software rendering)
Voodoo at 50 Mhz (default swap buffer) with LQ Unreal.ini: 23.52 fps
Voodoo at 60 Mhz (swap buffer 0) with LQ Unreal.ini: 23.84 fps
Voodoo at 50 Mhz (default swap buffer) with HQ Unreal.ini: 13.13 fps
Voodoo at 60 Mhz (swap buffer 0) with HQ Unreal.ini: 15.00 fpsThanks for sending your results!
